Review

"This series approaches color from a number of angles, including art, culture, nature, and science. Each title follows a similar format: a few sentences per spread accompanied by brilliantly colored photographs that exemplify the facts provided. Works of art, such as Frida Kahlo's Self-Portrait with a Monkey and Vincent van Gogh's Sunflowers, demonstrate the use of light and shadow or how color evokes emotion. Scenes from various countries show colors used for flags, holidays, or clothing. Examples of animal camouflage and coloration underscore the importance of color in nature. The perception of color and primary, secondary, and complementary colors are also explained. The text could be used as a read-aloud for younger students or enjoyed independently by older ones. VERDICT Educators could use this series for lessons on art, adaptations, optics, and culture. Highly recommended."--School Library Journal, Series Made Simple--Journal

The world is full of colors. Color is part of culture. This was a nonfiction book that discussed the use of colour in different cultures. It used kid-friendly language to discuss concepts that are sometimes difficult for students to understand – Culture is the art we make, the clothes we wear, and the way we live in the world. This book would be excellent to use in Social Studies as a starting point for a unit on culture. I liked the gorgeous photos and the crayon captions used in the book. These would be great discussion items. I also liked that this book included nonfiction text features (table of contents, glossary, index) that you do not often see in books geared towards a younger audience. The only thing I wish is that there were more detailed captions to describe the photos or a guide/explanation at the end to help discuss the photos. I think this book would be perfect for preschool-Grade 1.

My grandson and I read this together discussing the colours, the celebrations, the clothes etc. He actually enjoyed the illustrations and talking about the colours. He is only four, but the book's bright illustrations and simple text held his attention. He actually wanted to paint after reading this, not sure if it was because of the book that this was his desire, but it seemed so. A very simple book to highlight many colours in the world in a different way. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.
