Jennifer L. Skeem, PhD, is Associate Professor of Psychology and Social Behavior at the University of California, Irvine, where she is also a member of the MacArthur Research Network on Mandated Community Treatment, the Center for Psychology and Law, and the Center for Evidence-Based Corrections. Dr. Skeem conducts research on such topics as psychopathic personality disorder, violence risks, and psychiatric treatment outcomes of offenders. She is a recipient of the Saleem Shah Award for Early Career Excellence in Psychology and Law, awarded jointly by the American Psychology-Law Society (Division 41 of the American Psychological Association) and the American Academy of Forensic Psychology.  Kevin S. Douglas, LLB, PhD, is Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Law and Forensic Psychology Program in the Department of Psychology, Simon Fraser University, Canada. He conducts research on forensic assessment and violence, with a specific focus on violence risk assessment. If it weren’t for my curiosity and love of the outdoors and exploring nature, I could almost live my entire life between my ears sitting in a comfortable chair surrounded by good books. But selling is a necessary part of any successful business. Selling is a necessary part of life if you have to gain the cooperation of others. And at some point in our lives, we all have to do it. Matthew’s book sold me on his approach and validated my entire 30+ years of professional experience in Chapter 1 with this paragraph: “Here’s the advantage in sales we introverts have over our extroverted peers: We don’t rely on our personality. In the absence of natural talent we have to rely on a process...and in the long-run, process beats personality. Every time.” Matthew then lays out a seven-step process that anyone can follow—a process that focuses on establishing rapport with potential customers (without having to make up small talk), gets to the heart of the customer’s pain points, and describes how you can sell your solution and dissolve objections through storytelling. Although externally I appear to people as extroverted, it is an act. By nature, I am an introvert. Being mostly an introvert, I have long felt that I had to lear to be someone else in order to succeed in business and especially anything to do with selling. Most sales training is so geared toward extroverts, that if it acknowledges introverts at all, it is mostly to imply "You're wrong. Don't be like that." Unbelievably refreshing to read approaches born from authentic experience, tested and refined through years of effort, that make me feel like I am not "wrong" or "broken" just because I like to have some solo time to recharge my batteries and because I look inward for answers. I spent my career as an instructional designer building training content, selling systems and best practices structures. In the late 80's, I worked for a company that built selling simulators that were ahead of their time. The new-hire sales employee sat in a kiosk where a series of video segments of customers came up on the screen. At the end of each segment 4 options appeared on the screen, and the sales trainee had to select the right choice. If they selected an incorrect option, they got text feedback about why there was still a better choice. Once they made the correct choice, a camera light came on, telling them they had to respond to what the customer had just said on video. This was a painstaking process, but the end product was a seamless, back-and-forth video role play of the traineee selling to 3-4 customer types. The trainee was typically required to take that video back to his or her hiring manager and debrief their performance.Imagine the pressure on the new hire. They quickly learned the right choices, so they could navigate seamlessly through the choices. But they wanted to put their best foot forward, so they would literally repeat each simulation tens of times until their videos aligned perfectly with the prerecorded videos of the customer. One of our clients did research that their trainees "wasted" their first 35 customers because of their nervousness and ineptitude. Using this simulator reduced that number to 14 bad real customer sales calls.These simulators were very difficult to develop. We hired actors, dressed them and accessorized their office sets so they were high-fidelity. We believed our world-class clients--IBM, BellSouth, American Express, and the like--would simply tell us what their best-practice selling steps were and we would emulate them. Shockingly, none of them ever did or could. A 1-week step to gain agreement on the selling steps on the project plan typically extended out to 3 months. This was the beginning of my realization--early in my career--about how difficult it was for even world-class selling organizations to verbalize to consultants--but especially to their newly hired sales trainees--how they wanted them to sell.It was against this backdrop that Matt's book is so interesting. He's able to do and to describe in this simple-to-follow book what many of our simulator clients wanted us to do ... tell them how to sell and offer that structure. Where we typically started in our work with the Xerox Needs-Based Selling process, Matt has constructed his own selling structure that seems to appeal to everyone. And where his steps are structured, he describes procedures for making the actual scripts and stories unique and perfect to each client. I thought the introvert angle on this was interesting, but it eventually works for everyone in the organization.I never ran into similar simulators during the rest of my career, but that experience provided a foundation for getting my later employers and clients to identify, share, argue over, fine-tune, and finally agree about how they should sell (or answer customer service complaints or make collection calls). Today with social media, cellphone video and on-the-job technologies it's easier to constantly improve how each sales employee represents her or his organization. Matt has provided a blueprint for making this much easier to accomplish.

TIFFANIE TURNER is a licensed California architect, fine artist and instructor in the art of paper flower making in the United States and worldwide. Her work explores nature and botanical specimens in extremely large and sometimes very small scales, in paper. Her work has been exhibited in the San Francisco Bay Area’s Bedford Gallery, Jack Fischer Gallery, the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, and at the de Young Museum in San Francisco, where she was the artist-in-residence. Tiffanie has appeared in Vogue, American Craft, the San Francisco Chronicle, and O Magazine and has been featured online on Design*Sponge, The Jealous Curator, and Poppytalk, among others. Raised in the woods of New Hampshire, Tiffanie now resides with her husband and two children in San Francisco, California, where she has lived for the past twenty years.

I bought this instructional book, because I felt I was ready to graduate from making basic paper flowers to making more complex polychromatic flowers. I will begin my review with the physical attributes of the book. The hardcover edition sports a gorgeous cover page. The book is sturdy, and VERY importantly, the book binding allows the pages to open FLAT. This is important if your hands are full of dye and can't hold down the pages. The paper is not glossy, such that your light source is not reflecting light back into your retina. The font is small, so if you have a problem with small print, you may need to also get the Kindle edition.THE CONTENTS:1) The author begins with very detailed discussion on types of crepe paper as this is the main material used in this book. Also, tips for working with crepe paper and materials are elaborated. Next, she details the basic techniques e.g. cupping, fringing (author states it's her "strong suit") spindling, paper staining to name a few. The techniques are paired with photographs. The photographs are so detailed and CLOSE-UP that you can see the grain of the paper.2) The flowers and instructions included in this book are: Bougainvillea Carnation Daffodil &Double Daffodil. Obviously, these flowers are not something you throw together in 30 minutes. It will take great care to imitate the real flowers. I use photographs. She recommends the actual flower. This is not a book for beginners. However, it can provide an excellent challenge, and you will have gorgeous flowers as your reward! I highly recommend this book!

This is an incredibly detailed book on how to construct realistic paper flowers. I would consider this an instruction manual for more advanced artists and crafters, but there are plenty of tutorials appropriate a beginner, as well (the magnolia leaves are wonderful).The techniques alone make this book worth its weight in gold. Tiffanie gives instructions on how to color papers beautifully, how to use different glues to achieve different effects, and how to shape petals in a realistic manner.All that being said, the instructions can get a little wordy in places and I’ve had to read through different parts several times to figure out what the next step is. Making notes in the margins and on the template pages has been very helpful for me. If you can manage, taking a class with Tiffanie is helpful as well, as she can explain the steps in different ways and actually show you how to do it.Even if I wasn’t a paper flower artist, I would consider buying this book for the images alone. Every single page is beautiful.So, just go ahead and put the book in your cart. You won’t be sorry.

This book is beautiful to flip through. I was inspired and jumped into the giant flower. The sources for materials in the book are helpful. Be ready to drop a good amount of money into these babies. As a beginner I had to read the directions a couple of times before being able to find the clearest approach and streamline my process. I'd say at least for the giant flower one overall count of petals would be very helpful. The artist and author is generous to share her crafting skills but this a book for mid level to high level crafters. Don't give up though, I'm a week into my flower and very excited!

Gorgeous book by a master artist! A beyond generous instruction book on how to color and craft beautiful flowers. A lot of the instructions are text, alongside pictures. Tiffanie Turner's techniques are unique, so this book is a worthy addition to your paper flower book collection.If, however, you've never made paper flowers before or are not naturally crafty (like me-- I just love flowers) some sections you may need to supplement if you're a visual learner like myself. I need to be shown most of the time, like how to construct a basic leaf. There are plenty of videos online, or I find that some of my craftier friends are able to discern instructions in these books better than I can. This book is still worth getting because it is a --generous-- resource of inspiration.This book is tremendous on its own merit as well as an addition to what is out there because of Turner's masterful command of realism. I don't know of anyone else who brings to form wilting/wilted flowers, and is able to capture the essence of the flower like she can. If I could do what the author can, I'd keep the info to myself and hog the glory.

I am new at making crepe paper flowers and find Tiffanie's book very informative with very detailed instructions as well providing the reader with the necessary supplies (as well as suppliers) required to make the flowers. It also appears to be written from easier flowers at the beginning and moving to more difficult flowers.Everyone will make the same flower differently, that's what makes crepe flowers unique. There is a learning technique for manipulating/shaping the crepe paper and the weight of the crepe paper makes a difference in the final look of your flower.

If only my University had prescribed this book when I was studying economics. If you love derivatives but have always felt a bit intimidated by derivatives instruments, traders, jargon and models, then this book will make you confident to learn more about the subject, to stand your ground with the experts and you might even dare to get involved in derivatives trading yourself. Thank you, Andrew M. Chrisholm, for answering all the questions I had about every kind of derivative.

My co worker recommended this book to me to get a better understanding of interest rate derivatives and it has proved to be very invaluable since I had purchased it. Not many books breaks in general breaks things down that is easily understandable and this book does just that. It avoids the complexities of derivatives and breaks things down in a very simple, step-by-step manner. That's not to be confused with the material being too high level or dumbed down - the explanations and examples are very clear and that's what makes it less intimidating to learn. I did not have any knowledge in Interest Rate Derivatives prior to purchasing this book and its definitely helped me a lot. I would definitely recommend this to anyone working in that field of study or even just curious to learn about these products.

Comprehensive and understandable (at least to me). Includes examples that illuminate each tool. This is complex stuff and this book provided me with a foundation on this area. More study required past this book, but I at least now have an understanding ot the basics.

I used the prior edition of this book as the text for a law school course on derivatives and it worked very well. I have since recommended this book to students who wanted an introduction to the subject as well as to an instructor of a course on the taxation of financial instruments. It is an excellent introduction, well-written and easily understood.
