John Bockstoce provides the detail and color that can only come from tireless and rigorous research, turned in his capable hands into a gripping story linking remote Arctic families, high fashion Paris, corporate shenanigans, and a remarkable cast of characters from murderers to men of vision and integrity. It is especially fascinating to see how far the market economy had penetrated the region a century ago, and how much the changes we make much of today have already been seen in a similar form.
