An outstanding history of the western Arctic at the beginning of the 20th century. John Bockstoce provides the detail and color that can only come from tireless and rigorous research, turned in his capable hands into a gripping story linking remote Arctic families, high fashion Paris, corporate shenanigans, and a remarkable cast of characters from murderers to men of vision and integrity. It is especially fascinating to see how far the market economy had penetrated the region a century ago, and how much the changes we make much of today have already been seen in a similar form.

“Steve does a masterful job of not only helping us all understand what capabilities are needed to be successful into the future in our profession, but does so in a manner that leaves us excited, inspired, and ready to take action. HR on Purpose is a must-read for anyone at any point in their career in the ever-changing HR field.” —Jason Averbook, Co-founder of Infusion and former CEO, The Marcus Buckingham Company “Steve Browne has a passage in this book that says: ‘When you go into a grocery store, you are drawn to the things that are placed to catch your eye. Companies intentionally pay for better shelf space so that you will look at their brands in the hope that you’re more likely to buy their goods. We have to do this in HR. We have to get in the line of sight of our employees and make our goods attractive and accessible.’ I urge you to put this book at eye level in wherever you work and make sure you see this book every day. Each day, open it like an HR daily devotional and read for five minutes. It doesn’t really matter where you open the book. Just randomly open it and read. You will be a better HR professional and a better person for doing it.” —Paul Hebert, Senior Director, Solutions Architecture, Creative Group “As someone who has known Steve Browne for many years and considers him a friend and mentor, I’ve been suggesting for years that he write a book to share his wealth of wisdom and experiences with HR and business leaders. One of the better “HR” books I’ve read in a while. Yet, it’s much more far reaching than a “HR book”. This book is a refreshing change with anecdotes to both challenge your thinking and inspire you. This book was insightful, well researched and purpose driven. I have definitely become a Steve Browne evangelist.Any HR professional who reads this book will go...ahh that makes so much sense.I would highly recommend it to anyone who is wondering what to do next in their career or considering a career in Human Resources and looking for some guidance moving forward. Thank you Steve for focusing on what makes HR great instead of what makes it difficult.Well worth the time and money invested to read.~ Phidelia Johnson, SPHR, SHRM-SCP

I'm new to the HR profession and have been on Twitter trying to learn everything I can from current professionals. Steve Browne and his book are frequently mentioned, for good reason. This is a mix of tales from the trenches and practical advice. I don't know what HR's reputation is to the wider world but he makes it sound dynamic. He is positive, conversational and engaging in tone. Easy, quick read.

In "HR on Purpose," Steve Browne spreads his vital message to HR professionals about the need to re-discover and re-ignite our passion for our chosen field and for serving others -- and he does so in one of the most authentic, conversational voices that I've ever read. As a long-time HR person myself, I've long admired Steve's great and generous contributions to the field and his fellow pro's. I would argue, though, that his words of wisdom here apply just as much to any manager in any field -- not just HR. It's all about leading through taking the time to get to know, serve, and inspire others. It's a wonderful and important book and a crucial message in our age of being over-scheduled, over-whelmed, and over-run. Thanks, Steve!

This book should seriously be a prerequisite for anyone entering the HR field. I also think it could be a great way to get your fire back if you are starting to feel a little burned out. For me, it fueled my passion and confirmed my purpose!

If you are a Human Resources professional, or are wanting to be in Human Resources, then you need to read this book! Steve does a masterful job of discussing his own experiences while challenging you to focus on your own personal development and career growth. While it is easy to get lost in the daily administrative tasks, we need to remember why we do what we do – the people! What we do hinges on our perspective and our approach. As Steve says, “Step back, look at what you do, and OWN IT!!HR is tough, there’s no doubt about it. Steve’s fresh look at HR challenges you to drop the filters and preconceptions of HR should be and instead take a look of what HR could be. HR on Purpose rekindles your passion for Human Resources and challenges you to walk alongside him and make HR rock!! Steve is truly tipping the needle and changing HR!

If you want to be a great HR leader (or just a great leader) you should read this book! What I like best about HR On Purpose is the simple, practical leadership stories. That may seem strange for a book on HR (and might have something to do with my own focus on leadership) but one of Steve's primary points is that HR folks - like all leaders - have to focus on people, not policies and compliance.Steve shares stories from his own experiences coming up as a "lone wolf" HR Department. His story about his first boss, who gave him an interesting "orientation ultimatum," explains a lot about his focus on getting to know his people. Another story - near and dear to my heart because it perfectly illustrates the importance of leader approachability that I discuss in my own work. I highlighted dozens of stories and quotes. If you know Steve at all you know his favorite word is "geeked" - and I was geeked to read this book. Whether you are an HR leader or just a leader of people, you'll find a ton of practical guidance here!

Steve Browne isn't just an advocate for the field of human resources. He is an advocate for strong and ethical employment practices that enable people to achieve their best at work. Steve is the voice HR needs right now, and I strongly recommend this book. It's an essential read for all managers, HR business partners, and talent-related professionals who are looking for leadership and positivity in a profession that often deals with the underbelly of organizations. Read this book if you're looking to reconnect with your passion or find your purpose in HR.

Steve Browne may be on the road to single-handedly saving the field of Human Resources. I was truly inspired by Steve's storytelling and the passion that he has for his work - and most importantly his people! If you don't feel this way about your work in HR - get out! If your HR leader doesn't act like this - fire them! HR on Purpose is the best book on HR I've ever read. The author's passion for this field is loud and clear from the very first page and I bought a copy for each of the employees on my HR team.
