About the Author

Jill C. Cash, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, a family nurse practitioner for over 20 years, currently practices as a family nurse practitioner at the Vanderbilt Medical Group, Westhaven Family Practice, in Franklin, Tennessee. Her past experience includes teaching as an instructor for the School of Nursing, Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville and Carbondale, Illinois, in the undergraduate BSN program and the graduate NP program. Her previous experience includes high risk obstetrics as a clinical nurse specialist in maternal-fetal medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, rheumatology in the outpatient setting, women's health in the outpatient setting, and providing wound care in skilled nursing facilities. She has served as a member and officer on numerous boards which include Hospice of Southern Illinois, the Marion Memorial Health Foundation, the American Cancer Society, and Women for Health and Wellness in Southern Illinois. Ms. Cash has authored several chapters in other textbooks and is the co-author of Family Practice Guidelines, first, second, third, and fourth editions, and Adult-Gerontology Practice Guidelines. Most recently, she was awarded the 2017 AANP Nurse Practitioner State Award for Excellence from Illinois.

This was a fantastic review. The only thing I did not like is that you had to go in order and complete each section before attempting the review test after each section. Be prepared it is very time consuming.

The first book is fine, though like many readers I really disliked the "tone-setting" misspellings the author uses. I get that his intent is to show that Todd is un-educated, but it's very clumsy and detracts from the actual reading experience.Good parts: the concept of the series is actually very intriguing. Generation ships were sent to settle a new planet, but on this planet all animals can talk (not like humans, but things like dogs can audibly yell SQUIRREL instead of just barking) and men lose the ability to keep their thoughts private, uncontrollably broadcasting their thoughts to everyone around in what is called Noise. Add in an intelligent native population that no one realized was there, and you have the makings of a good book.Unfortunately, the author can't carry through on the concepts. **Spoilers** The first book focuses on a young boy named Todd and his journey to find somewhere safe in this strange world, along with his friend Viola who recently arrived to the planet. This book was fine, the writing is not outstanding but I enjoyed the journey. However, once you get into the second and especially third book, it is just awful. The main character Todd, who Ness makes a big deal out of being "innocent" and "unable to lie or kill", actively participates in enslaving, torturing, and killing the native population. He allies himself with the psychotically evil Mayor of the area and several times chooses to save this man's life rather than try to end the horrific abuse he perpetuates. Todd, Viola, and another boy quickly develop a love triangle of sorts, which for Todd and Viola mainly consists of committing horrific acts to "save" each other or because they cannot bear to see the other one hurt. I could understand this being done once or twice, but it happens five or six times and each time they make things tremendously worse for everyone. At one point, Viola LAUNCHES MISSILES into a crowd of natives and settlers because Todd is in danger, literally starting a war. And the author represents this all as being understandable errors and the two young people as being incredibly moral and upright individuals.I just cannot get behind the themes of this series at all. I won't be allowing my teen to read this and I felt gross after reading it myself, There are many, many scenes of graphic torture in this book, suicide bombers, torture via mind control, and worse. Do yourself a favor and find a different series.

When I first started the series, I was put off buy the writing style. The characters seemed stupid and the was the spoke was insulting, so I put the book down for months. I ran out of reading material and picked it back up and started over, deciding that I'd read a few more chapters and give it a chance. I'm SO glad that I did! Wow, the author shows how the main character changes from just an arrogant, disrespectful kid to a "man." If you read the story, you'll understand why I have man signified. It's a breathtaking story and one that will stick with you for a long time.Also, the title's of the books are very aptly named! There are real meanings behind the obvious reason's for the titles.Bottom Line: A fanastic journey. A true story that you can get lost in and one that I highly recommend to anyone who likes a good get-lost-in-the-moment read!

I read this series because I really liked A Monster Calls and I thought a Hunger Games-type series would be fun. I have mixed feelings about it. Overall, the story is really good, but it was way too long and repetitive. The characters kept falling into the same traps, which was really annoying, and it dragged on forever. Also, I was not able to get past the main characters being teenagers. To be fair, this is clearly a YA book with teens as the main characters, but I thought it wouldn't bother me that much because so many adults liked this book. I was wrong. But I think teens would love this book.

It was OK. The first book was quite enjoyable on a simple superficial level. However, the characters of the 13 y.o. being held in such high regard and as leaders was not believable/plausible. Primarily because they acted like kids - leaders don't act like kids, so if you actually had a 13-14 y.o. who was admired so much by a community to be thrust into leadership over adults, they wouldn't act like immature, selfish, petulant children. It is an easy read and probably more appealing to the early teenager. I bought it based on the "must read before it becomes a movie" list. It is NOT on the level of the Hunger Games or Divergent series.

Somewhere along the line I downloaded the prequel "The New World" and it sat in my Kindle library. looking for something short to read I read it but didn't realize it was actually a prequel until after I finished. Having really enjoyed "The New World" I bought the trilogy of the series. Chaos Walking is written much different than its prequel. It took a little getting use to the dialect used in the series. Yet as you begin to get to know Todd, the main character of the first book, you begin to appreciate the difference of New Earth and Todd's life. One of the more creative aspects of this series is that all men on New Earth have Noise - where their thoughts are no longer private and can be heard by everyone. Through this series, the reader follows Todd, and eventually Viola, through their grand adventure across an untamed works seeking safety, hope, and trying to remain true to who they are rather than changed by the corruption of mankind. Lots of action, very well written dialogue, and loveable characters make this a memorable story of living in a world where information and thoughts are freely seen and heard, and actions always have consequences.
