Invention by Design; How Engineers Get from Thought to Thing

Review

If in Invention by Design Henry Petroski doesn't quite endow engineers with all the nobility and cachet of the artist, he does make the products of their work--the beer cans from which we drink, the airplanes in which we fly--the interesting things they truly are. Each of these--along with the paper clip, pencil, zipper, fax machine, water-supply system, bridge and skyscraper--Petroski honors with a heavily illustrated chapter, each a glimpse into the workings of engineering design...[Petroski] tells a good story. (Robert Kanigal Civilization)This is a delightful book to read. Ostensibly, written for intelligent laypersons to give some understanding of how we got to the technological world in which we now live, it will probably be read and enjoyed as much or even more by engineering and product designers. (Peter J. Booker Engineering Designer)Petroski light-heartedly though soundly exposes the so-called engineer's thinking, which from its position within the field of science and technology is more concerned with designing than with calculating. The book makes elegant connections between the design features of a variety of "engineering products." These are discussed in the most natural-seeming of series; from paper clip, pencil and zipper, via problems of water and air transport, to designs for bridges and skyscrapers. The reader is, as it were, trained to be an inquisitive designer. Scattered throughout the book are brief mental exercises in the shape of entertaining questions regarding designed details of the real world (Why are ashtrays in aircraft glued shut? What structural precautions need to be taken if a complete oil platform, whose length is greater than the height of the highest building in the world, is to be moved from a horizontal to a vertical position?) This arrangement explains why the book is required reading for many a student. But Petroski also achieves the necessary depth whenever he explains in detail the principles and processes which lie behind existing and widely known products...[Invention by Design] does comprise an outstanding source of knowledge and inspiration as much about history as about design approaches. (Marc Maurer Archis [The Netherlands])Invention by Design should be required reading for all present and future engineers. (Dennis J. Fallon ASEE Prism)People who think engineering is a bore have never read anything by Henry Petroski. A professor of civil engineering and history at Duke University, Petroski is notable for writing an entire book about pencils...and making the whole 400 pages completely fascinating. His newest book, which proclaims itself as showing `how engineers get from thought to thing,' is equally interesting...Invention by Design uses 10 short case studies to introduce some of the discipline's salient principles and techniques...Readers end up with a wonderful accumulation of fun facts...Such details do more than entertain. They show how engineers work and emphasize how engineers must go beyond design and analysis to consider the risks and consequences of a product's failure, ensure quality control, minimize costs and satisfy the dictates of aesthetics, politics and social attitudes. (John R. Alden Cleveland Plain Dealer)[A] lucid and lively book...Whether designing something as small as a pencil or as large as the World Trade Center, successful engineers must not only devise new technology but also find a way to situate that technology within the existing economic, social, and ecological order. Every case study includes well-chosen pictures and schematic drawings to clarify how inventors resolve technical difficulties, and the carefully researched text explains how they make their new creations economically feasible and socially acceptable. Students of technology will delight in one part of the book, cultural historians in another, but both groups will praise the author. (Bryce Christensen Booklist)Petroski...has done much to make the nerdy world of engineering interesting and accessible to the reader. Here, he's after a difference audience, one interested in the philosophy and cultural study of the process of invention...This book is engaging...[It's] good reading for those interested in the gestalt of engineering design. (Library Journal)Petroski is, essentially, a cheerleader for civil engineers, who are at their most successful when their designs blend so completely into our environment that we forget about the magnificent achievements they represent. Here Petroski takes a look at the development of such things as pencils, zippers, paper clips, the fax machine, turbojet aircraft, suspension bridges, aluminum beverage cans, and the systems that heat and cool modern buildings...[A] pleasant, readable, and persuasive [book]. (Kirkus Reviews)Henry Petroski does it again: bringing engineering to life. Engineering design is a very human activity, with social and cultural factors playing as much a role as science and mechanics. Nobody tells the story better than Petroski, with his meticulously researched case histories of objects that range from the small and ordinary to the large and complex. Our understanding of design is, once again, made richer and more profound. (Donald A. Norman, Vice President, Apple Computer, and author of Things That Make Us Smart)Magicians are famous for keeping their `tricks' a secret. Inventors and engineers are often thought to have the same attitude about their often remarkable technological achievements. Ask a person on the street how zippers, pop-top aluminum cans, or fax machines work, and you're likely to get a shrug and an anguished admission: `I don't even know how to program my VCR.' At last, the always enlightening--and entertaining--Henry Petroski explains many of the more confounding technological riddles of modern life in Invention by Design. This is a delightful book and a `must read' for anyone who wants to know how the modern world got to be the way it is. (Norman R. Augustine, President and CEO, Lockheed Martin Corporation)

Engineers build and design everything from zippers, paper clips, and beer cans to bridges, waterworks, and airplanes. What can such disparate items possibly have in common that they each fall under the heading of engineering? There's more to it than just fiddling about with plans and models. Engineers think and engineers do. They understand the abstract principles fundamental to one area and then extend these principles to a wide variety of non-obvious applications. The book devotes a chapter each to several aspects of engineering and illustrates abstract ideas with concrete examples: paper clips and design, pencils and analysis, zippers and development, aluminum cans and failure, fax machines and networks, airplanes and computing, waterworks and society, bridges and politics, and finally buildings and systems.Chapter two looks at stress analysis of cantilever beams (beams that come out of a wall at a 90 degree angle, e.g. to support a veranda) and how this relates to making better pencils. In chapter eight, Petroski describes the place of engineering in society. Building a bridge is usually a large scale public project, and the politics of selecting sites and securing funds matter as much as the technical concerns of selecting a design and material. Each chapter develops the main theme that engineering is much more than tinkering or mastering technical skills. It is the art that gets us from thought to thing.Vincent Poirier, Tokyo

I found that Henry Petroski's novel, Invention By Design, is extremely informative about the patent process and ways to make sure your designs and ideas are not copyrighted. For an inventor or designer beginning their career, like myself, I found this book very helpful and a genuine advantage for my designs. By reading this novel, it will help you understand and rethink certain aspects of your creations. When sketching the designs for a product, I recommend an Inventors Notebook, full of graph paper and note pages. While making your notebook, make sure to include many dates of events, and discoveries, as this will improve your legitimacy of your concept, if ever needed. The novel will let your ideas flow right onto paper, with near step by step instructions as to, what is next in the process. Should I get this name copyrighted? Could my product be produced for less than the average consumer is willing to pay for such an item? These are a few of the questions that Henry Petroski hits upon in his novel, Invention By Design.

I love this book! Good quality, fast arrivel, interesting concepts, beautiful cover art! I needed this book for my intro Engineering class and this book is perfect for those just now starting to learn

I have gotten this book for a book project in a sophomore physical science class. At first I wasn't very thrilled about the book because I didn't know how complicated it would be to read. On the other hand, I was looking forward to learning about how engineers really do get from thought to thing. Before ordering this book I wanted to know some part of the process of engineers and what goes through their mind when thinking of a certain invention and actually putting it to use. Henry Petroski does a good job in the beginning introduction by explaining engineering ideas and making points on what goes through an engineers mind. Petroski does a good job in his overall outline of the book and how he creates a type of novel that involves simple examples. Petroski talks about a paper clip in his first chapter. I don't know any object that could be more simplistic than a paper clip. What I thought was interesting was that Petroski focused more on the history and about the paper clip than I would have expected. I wasn't reading this book so I could learn about the history of aluminum cans and zippers, I was expecting to learn a certain process that engineers go by and have in mind with all objects. I would recommend this book to anybody interested in the engineering career and history of great engineers.

An early book by the author, and not as interesting as subsequent works.

I'll be honest. Not that impressed. Very unorganized. He goes on through a whole chapter or more of just the history of paper clips. I didn't even know that was possibly. Not very interesting and not very helpful. He uses words that (if you don't have inventing experience) you wouldn't understand. I had to google words on several occasions. And I'm not even done with the book

Seems to be derived from other Petroski Material, really not up to his great writing.

Great book for those considering mechanical engineering. My son found it very inspiring and it may have been what tipped the scales in his decision.

Great information and help to allow growth in your church. Self examination is vital. New and fresh ideas. I started out against some of these changes but now I see why I was wrong. I am a supporter now. This book expressed and talked about all my opposing views.

Just finished this book on Kindle, and while it is fresh in my mind, I wanted to go ahead and review it. I know that we all have our preferences for reading material. The reason that this book is timely is that he could be describing my own church which like the fictional church in New England is steeped in tradition, has a LONG history like ours, has multi-generations who have attended the same church. I believe he used the novelization approach just as a vehicle to convey the thoughts, feelings, opinions of the people which make up the church as well as inserting much good information on the process of change in a congregation over time. Gordon MacDonald describes himself as a compromise candidate, a kind of father figure. He and his wife, Gail are themselves in this book, and it is told from the Pastor’s point of view. Each chapter begins with Pastor notes on whatever is going on at the time. The book opens with the failure of an agenda item that by all rights should have passed with flying colors. Blind-sided by the over-reactions of people he had been pastoring for three years and thought he knew, he decided some further communication should be undertaken. There had been a lot of outward changes in this church over the years, not all of his doing: hymnbooks were passe’, the organ was gone, PowerPoint presentations during the sermons were common, pews had been replaced with individual chairs, people didn’t dress up for church as much, and small groups replaced Sunday School classes. His purpose as a pastor was stated in chapter 1: “Most important, I was committed to pointing the church toward the outside world and getting it to see that the real action was what happened, not on Sunday in the church building, but between Sundays in the home, in the marketplace, in the school” (Loc. 276).But, tension between the generations had reached a tipping point. An informational meeting was set up, and fifteen stalwarts of the church showed up. Complaints are flying thick and fast, but to Pastor MacDonald’s credit, his character listens and wants to understand their point of view. The title of the book is taken from a comment made by a widow, “Who stole my church?” which is the way she feels. The rest of the book explores how change occurs from church history, and from biblical examples. Each generation must find a way to reach the next one.The church was transformed because the people began to understand and see that the Gospel message and the Word of God, and Christ do not change, but the method of delivery has changed from the early church onward. Along the way, they learn more about each other, and become a core group that seeks to support and mentor the younger generation, and reach the lost all around them.I enjoyed this read, posted on Goodreads also. Had a hard time putting it down. Every church body of believers is different, but it was heartening to see explanations for how people perceive and deal with change as a process. He references a book, The Diffusion of Innovation by Roberts about the Toshiba Corporation to illustrate the percentage of people in a group who are innovators (2.5%); early adopters (key people who are trusted) (13:5%); early majority (those who talk it out and come around) (34%), late majority, (those who are skeptical and want to see results first),(34%), and laggards (never changers). Our church has a wonderful visionary gifted in leadership as pastor, but this book helped me understand that change is normal, and things ever stay the same EXCEPT the gospel message and the Word of God.

There are a few bright spots in this book. The fictional characters do represent some caricatures of church people I've met. There are some good takeaways for thinking through changes in the church and how to go about doing it. Unfortunately these are the only good takeaways. The perspectives of the local church and how to reach people are not very helpful. Principles like: belonging before believing, changing the name of the church, changing the music style, and spending crazy amounts of money on tech equipment just to name a few. These changes are superficial and will not necessarily bring about biblical fruitfulness. Some better principles that were almost completely neglected would be: clarifying the gospel, establishing meaningful membership, substance in worship is more important than styles, and cultivating a culture of disciple-making as the means to reach the lost world. The fictional story was a bit too cute for my personal taste buds but I will admit that it kept me interested at times when I wasn't interested in the lessons behind the story. It is an easy read and not an awful book. I can see myself recommending this book to a few select people who are grounded in the Bible.

I love a good story and MacDonald spins an adequate tale. It's like watching one of those artsy Broadway plays that are intended to make you think. Its all dialog and very little action. Of course, the purpose as he defines it, is to provide a justification for the "modernizing" (my term) of the church. He speaks of "bringing the church into the 21st century." His approach is like that of Eli Goldratts "The Goal" in that he uses a fictional story as his medium. Its is (excuse the pun) a novel approach in church growth literature.I catorgically disagree with his main thesis that the church (mainly those over 50 years of age) must just get over it in regard to the wholesale abandonment of hymns, choirs, traditional communion, and the implementation of slick worship bands, praise songs, and Power Point-driven messages. The Father, Son and Holy Spirit have not changed. Nor has their approach to humanity. The rush to modernize is characterized by the youth-obsession of American culture. He advocates an approach very similar to the "seeker-sensitive" churches like Willow Creek. You must read between the lines to catch where he is going in this tale. I was very angry at his assumptions and his conclusions. I was left with the feeling that he is regecting the previous generation with their wants and needs over the next generation. Once again, hating tradition and anything to do with it.Beware the backlash! There is a growing community of those identified by "Christianity Today" as "Young, radical, and reformed." They like the traditions.

Went to a Synod conference and this book was highly recommended. Went home and ordered and stayed up all night and finished reading it. If your church is shaky or strog in its belief read tis book on how to improve I, sustain it or move on. Prayer, unity and love connect everyone and this book explains it all. Powerful, clear and written with faith, you can't not read this book. Strongly recommend it.

How will the show go for the young friends?Tess has to do both their chores when Haley has to go lie down because she has a migraine — which usually happens when there is work to be done... Is Haley really sick every time she claims she has a migraine or is she just trying to get out of doing her chores? This was another delightful edition to the Pony Jumpers series. It was a quick and easy read. It was good to read a story from Tess' point of view — we hardly ever hear from her unless Haley is screaming and yelling at her...

I love the way the characters intertwine in this series, each of which is told from a different character's viewpoint. This time it's Tessa telling the tale. In previous books Tessa has been the one with the pony out of control in the show jumping ring, berated by her hard-riding, winning older sister Hayley and her mother for not riding well enough on a Grand Prix pony. She's been a minor character but her story is major. Hayley has a new horse and insists - because she's a bossy boots and nobody says no to her - that Tessa ride Misty, Hayley's old pony who is overexcitable and not Tessa's type of pony at all. (And here I relate to her; I have been scared witless on ponies like Misty in my dim, distant past.) Misty is a Grand Prix champion, but Hayley's riding style is completely different to Tessa's. Tessa agrees to persevere with Misty until Christmas - only seven weeks away...Like all the books in this series this one is as much about family dynamics and friendships as ponies. Something is wrong with Hayley, and while that's being investigated she isn't supposed to ride her new horse Copper. Neighbour Jonty steps in to exercise Copper, and Tess forges a friendship with him that could go much further than mere friends - to the disgust of her friend Mia who fancies Jonty for herself. Tessa has a lot to deal with, and some unexpected people become her allies and friends.I love this series - can't wait for the next one!

As I began to read this book, I wasn't the biggest fan. It didn't really seem to me like a book that was really what I was interested in. However as Kate developed the plot in a funny yet realistic manner, I fell In love. Kate developed so many realistic ideas which made you feel happy, sad, angered and confused right alongside areas. With plenty of plot twists in there as well, it was another truly magnificent book and I couldn't put it down. An easy 5* from me again!

I can only say what I've said about each of these books, clever, unforgettable, addictive and beautifully structured. They are real, they are full off life and you won't guess what's in store for our pony jumpers and their world. That is perhaps the greatest part and what keeps us readers gasping at every tight turn.

Too many unanswered questions and no idea which book answers them.

Excellent read, enjoyed it as much as the previous three. Can't wait for the next one. :-) Written from a knowledgeable perspective, making me think I was right there ringside.

This entry in the Pony Jumpers series takes the unique view of Tess, a relatively peripheral character in the earlier three novels. Unlike some of Lattey's other heroines, Tess is very quiet and not competitive by nature. She loves riding but isn't much of a daredevil and much prefers hacking out rather than winning in the ring. Unfortunately, her older sister Hayley is determined Tess will inherit her incorrigible pony Misty. Throughout much of the book Misty becomes a kind of vehicle for Hayley to bully and dominate Tess. A wonderful character study of sibling rivalry as well as horses. I think this book has some of my favorite equine characters of the entire series, not just Misty but also Copper, Hayley's talented but spooky and silly horse.

This installment features a new character (Tess) who would rather ride her solid ranch pony than her sister's flighty show jumping champion. The beginning was a bit slow as the author fleshed out a whole cast of characters that we've only glimpsed before (really, we've mostly seen Hayley, Tess's sister, bullying Tess at the horse shows), but in the time it took for Tess to meet up with the girls from the other books (AJ, Katy, and Susannah), the reader really gets to know Tess and her family. This book grapples with the real meaning of being courageous and also delves into what makes a true friend. Tess has a lot to learn about both issues, but she grows throughout the story. We also get to see the mischievous Misty up close in all of his orneriness. I might suggest a course of ulcergard for that evil pony! With malicious Misty, reassuring Rory, and cowardly Copper, the equines are just as well developed as the humans in this fourth novella in the Pony Jumper series. If you haven't read the series from the beginning, I highly recommend reading them in order to get the full story.
