Got this for my husband after he heard about it on a NPR program I believe. He likes it and is reading it on his work trip. The only complaint were the names are gender neutral so its hard to know who is male and female.

This is the most impactful sci-fi series I've ever read. What I mean by that, is that this series has permanently changed: the way I look at the stars, the way I perceive time, the way I think about life, the way I think about SETI, the way I think about the meaning of life, the way I think about human beings' place in the universe, the way I view technology, etc.This series well and truly "blew my mind away". This isn't a page0-turning space opera adventure kind of story. The story is interesting and good, and there is most definitely some drama and entertainment - and the writing is excellent (translation to English is superb). But the main thing for me about this series is that it educated me about physics and really made me look at EVERYTHING through a new lens. The ideas in this book I had never encountered before - and I am a voracious reader. I found this series to be totally original and mind-blowing. There were time where I simply needed to put it down after reading only a short time, in order to simply ponder the ideas presented. I've never had quite an experience like this with a book.Highly recommend this series. And, make sure you read all three, because each one is better than the last. The last book of the series was my favorite and just absolutely melted my brain. I mean, to the degree where I am questioning my own reality. Yes, it is that good. Really, a mind and perception altering experience.

It's impossible to rate this book on it's own since it's part of a stunning trilogy, and the quality of this book only really shines in the context of the whole. Cixin gets very technical in parts, and descriptions of physics can go on, and on. For that reason, I am glad that I had an audiobook for this one. I'm an academic, and already do a lot of reading, and some sections would start to feel more like work than relaxation. Still, I might have drifted off a little here and there during the most intense technical descriptions, but still paid enough attention to learn a bit about the speed of light, black holes and different dimensions.I also put the series down in the middle of the second book when I realized that there was not a single female character left that was a significant part of the narrative. But, I came back to it eventually, and I'm so glad I did. As it turns out, the 3rd book is largely from a feminine point of view, and thinking back, I'm pretty sure that Cixin was intentionally emphasizing a masculine point of view in the second book.Otherwise, the incredible scope of this book and the sheer audacity of even trying to tell this the story Cixin tells is breathtaking. It even has the quality of a fairy tale, but not a modern Disney version, more like the old dark folk tales of the past. Cixin waxes and wanes from optimism and despair, destruction and renewal and yin and yang throughout. As with life, there is no fairy tale ending, the story just ends when it ends.I'm going to be thinking about this story for many years to come.

I was on the fence about this book for a couple of years but I finally took the plunge and am extremely happy that I did! The reviews seemed to be a bit of a mixed bag and I saw some people suggest that it lacked interesting characters. Having read this book as well as its two sequels I can firmly say that this is not the case. There are several compelling and interesting characters in this book.Above all else the plot, world-building and pacing of the book are completely top notch. To have a hard sci-fi book that is not about space marines and laser guns but still manages to be a page-turner that you can't put down is an amazing achievement! This book represents the best in science fiction. It's about big ideas and examining possibilities. I refuse to discuss the plot but if you have an interest in science and technology and love the hard sci-fi genre, stop reading this review and order the book immediately!I will provide one disclaimer. If you have no interest in science whatsoever or just lack an aptitude or understanding of it, this book series may not be for you. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to enjoy this book but you probably will need to have at least a baseline understanding of some basic scientific principals and/or a willingness to google some stuff.Anyway, get it!!

Originally I passed on this book. Even in one of those desparate hunts for something new to read it didn't resonate with me. So I have to admit picking it up to see what the kerfuffle was about. What kind of book do all those sick puppies think unworthy of a Hugo award?It turns out the book they think unworthy is incredible. And ironically their ideological pogrom fits perfectly within the book!You want big ideas? It's there and there again.You want something different? I've never read anything like it before. This is so not a colonial dudes-rule-everything universe.You want to learn something? You will. Not only about science and human nature, but of an era probably only someone from China can communicate fully. It's fascinating.You want big scary aliens? You got 'em.You want high table stakes? How about the future of humanity?You want that unsettled feeling you get when you both deeply disagree and agree with an idea? Oh yes, that little knife twist is there.You want great writing? I'd say the writing is good, with many moments of greatness. In particular the beginning prose really pops. Then the writing moves the story along nicely with brief forrays back into lusciousness.A worthy winner in my estimation. It's a great story well told. And that's what it's all about.

This is a review of the text layout of the hardcover version. It is a shame that so much thought went into the content of this book and so little into the format. The font size and spacing is fine. But why in the world, on one-third of the pages, are sentences pulled out and highlighted in a box, as in newspaper articles? It's distracting to the reader -- and even demeaning to the reader, as if the publishers thought that we can't face a page of plain text -- or select our own favorite passages. Another complaint, an unfathomable practice by the publisher, is to place the titles, even the numbered beginnings, of new sections at the very bottom of the page! These, added to the very poor paper quality, are examples of the deterioration of standards in the production of physical books.

This book is for anyone who has an interest in the United States Constitution, the role of the Supreme Court in the affairs of state, the personalities of those who sit in ultimate judgement within the context of our government, or who may simply want to enjoy the verbiage, mental processes, remarkable wit, and insights of one of our most important contemporary jurists......a man who shaped nearly single-handedly the manner the Constitution is to be viewed and interpreted in today's world . Justice Scalia's impact is recognizable across the Nation's federal judiciary. I view this as an important book and, as such, will send each of my adult grandchildren a copy to enjoy.

My perspective reinforces Scalia's approach to USA Constitution interpretation -- a) addressed within the Constitution, b) historical basis, and c) established public support noting distinction between States and States vs. Federal reach. Opinions per cases presented illustrate Scalia's perspective as opposed to "magical" interpretations that either a) Congress, b) Executive, and/or c) the States should address as opposed to the USA Supreme Court. Said renderings of the Supreme Court become "law" across the USA. Given the length of time between possible similar cases, these "rulings" can and do make questionable the role of the USA Supreme Court.

One might not think that reading court opinions would be much fun, and for many of the esoteric cases the Supreme Court deals with it probably isn't, but this collection of opinions and dissents by the late Justice Scalia was entertaining and informative. Justice Scalia could really write! As a side benefit it got me back to rereading our Constitution and many parts of the Federalists Papers. It also, believe it or not, had me downloading and reading the complete cases; opinions, concurring opinions and dissents, of many of the cases covered in this fine book.Rhys Williams

I miss my hero/

I've always admired Justice Scalia but to tell the truth never really knew much about him other than his more famous opinions and dissents. After reading this book I feel as if I know him even better. Some of the opinions in this book are lesser known but definitely made me think about what I believe. In fact it even changed my opinion on a few things. His mastery of the English language and knowledge of history is astounding. I'm not a lawyer or legal scholar by any means so sometimes the book was challenging. However it definitely makes me want to learn more. I recommend to all who want to know what the Constitution truly means.

I have read only the first chapter so far and this book has grabbed me. Like Scalia or not, this is an excellent explanation of why he voted as he did and the basis of his opinions. Even Elena Kagan, who voted opposite to Scalia most of the time, respected his thoughts and opinions. He really did change how judges think about the law and how to decide cases. And it is not political or ideological, which is a nice change from the vitriol that is part of our daily news now.I am now about halfway thru the book and it is still 5 stars. His opinions are remarkably consistent in the thinking. Agree or not, his writing is thought-provoking. His use of language is fascinating.

What a giant in a court of mental midgets. His wisdom, wit, and ability to explain hard legal concepts in ways understandable by those who are not in the legal profession will be missed.
