I balked at the price--$130.00--but the recommendations for this book from others in the field of Germanic mythology and religion were so strong that I bit the bullet. I am so glad I did. This book takes the years of reading I have done on the subject and not only distills it but adds an equal measure of its own in-depth research and insight. If you are looking for a beginner's introduction to the subject, skip this until you have a good deal of learning under your belt. But if you're looking for real insight into Nordic religion' legend and mythology, you would be very hard pressed to find a better source.

In this work, E. O. G. Turville-Petre explores the sources and material of Norse religion, particularly during the Viking age. The result was this classic survey of the topic.The author explores the major gods of the Norse pantheon, as well as general practices of worship and the fact that belief in the gods was not entirely universal. Each section provides clear summaries of important studies in the area, as well as clear analysis of the primary and secondary sources.If one is studying Norse mythology or the Viking age, this would be one of the top ten books to own on the subject. I would highly recommend it.

I saw this book listed in the reference section of many books, and it was recc to me by a friend. This is NOT a light read. It is NOT a basic overview. It was however a great summary of many different topics, backed with study. This is certainly more like a text book on cultural language studies and how they are intermixed with religion, myth and history. I HIGHLY recc this book to anyone seriously looking into the Nordic mythos, religion and way of life, whether for the mundane or esoteric reason. It is well worth the price you will have to pay.

This and the collected works of H.R. Ellis Davidson are the finest materials out there. This is probably the most in depth exploration of the Gods and myths. You will find notes, themes, and observations within this work which you will not come across elsewhere. The book is expensive (sadly) but worth it. Anyone who has read any of Ann Rule's many true-crime books knows that few, if any authors of the genre come close to the high standard that she has set for detail; photographic , scientific, psychological and legal. The story of David Brown is not only a thrilling multiple portrait of the best and worst human characteristics. It is a gripping drama of misguided love, the frightening manipulation of others and a rare story of uncompromising determination and dedication by men and women of criminal law, including police, detectives,lawyers and Psychologists, among others. This is one of Ms. Rule's finest and most disturbing works. She, and the public, deserve it's transformation into a major motion picture.

The first book I ever read by Ann Rule. Read it 2 years ago and gave it to another to read. Realized that it was very familiar and I realized I had seen the movie on TV. Book is so much more detailed! I ordered this copy to replace my other one. After reading this one book, I became the biggest fan of Ann Rule books and have continually sought out all of her many books. Ann Rule died 2 years ago this July so there will be no more of her superb books. I still have one more of her books to obtain to complete my collection of her books. True Crime is always more interesting and exciting than fiction and no one did it better than Ann Rule

I had not previously read an Ann Rule book but am delighted that I did. The story is true and thus runs the risk of boredom, filler material of little interest, and the other aspects of true stories that tend to be unexciting even though interesting. Rule tells a story, however, such that is has the excitement of a fiction mystery story. I highly recommend this book if your a fan of fiction involving the law, murder mystery, and family dynamics gone astray.

"If You Really Loved Me" is a true crime novel telling the twisted tale of David Brown. Ann Rule is such an incredible true crime writer. Her background in police work and criminology shine through in this story.David Brown was one demented man (died March 2014). He manipulated every person in his world and twisted truths like he was wringing out laundry. He liked young women enough to marry 5-6 times before he was in his mid 30's. He had children, only to use them as pawns in his devilish schemes.This book details the entire dogged investigation into Mr. Brown's background, his possible motives and nasty deeds. From the first murder through the final trial, an amazing true story that left me chilled.Another plus is the photograph section in this book which allowed me to put faces to the names in this devastating tale. I read the Kindle version of this novel and I recommend it to any true crime novel fans.

A fascinating story about a manipulative, successful sociopath. This book reminded me of a person in my own life...not a murderer, but definitely lacking a conscience. This was such an interesting book, with so many twists and turns. Me. Rule is the best!

I am a fan of Ann Rule true crime mysteries, and this one is really riveting. Ann Rule gets into her subject matter and has photos and details that inform the reader so that you feel you know the people involved.

Ann Rule is the go-to author for real crime; think Truman Capote for everyday everyone. She takes us along with a killer giving us great insight into motive and methods. Ann Rule strives to answer "why?" And she has a wonderful way of pulls us along to find out "what really happened." Edge of your seat narration that must be read and can not be duplicated on TV or the screen.

David Brown and company is one of the most sordid and twisted tales of family dysfunction there is. A diabolical millionaire with an insatiable appetite for all that he shouldn't desire, he had a harem of willing (by default) supporters allowing his antics to continue for far too long.Ann Rule delivers as she does so well true crime. The layout of her stories creates an ambiance of being THERE - which eventually gives to to the shock value after everything is laid out . What makes Ann Rule such a great writer is that she is able to create the same delivery for her stories, yet all of them are powerfully shocking. Her perfectly placed pictures create an additional layer of being entrenched in her stories. And as always, providing us a glimpse into the 'after', (what the cast of characters are doing currently) gives us readers some closure.Until the next time.

What a fantastic, practical book to guide Independent Educational Consultants and their students on their college admissions journeys. The subtitle says it all. This is a BLUEPRINT for choosing the Best Schools for you. As a college counselor, I agree that finding "best fit schools" means looking beyond just the most famous brand name schools. The task is overwhelming and this book can help. First, the Preface dispels many myths about the process. I love the many worksheets. I use "Worksheet 1: Self-Survey for the College Bound" (+ MBTI) as part of my intake process to help me "get" my students and figure out how they tick. The book is very thorough. It's a good way for students to keep track of thoughts as priorities and requirements change over the high school years. "Worksheet 10: Application Timetable" is a good tracking sheet. "Worksheet 11: Campus Visit Notes" are great because you can compare notes. Otherwise, after visiting multiple schools, your impressions can become a big blur. "Worksheet 13: Essay Brainstorming" has a nice list of adjectives that can help students write more descriptive essays.

Very helpful. If you and your child use this book together it will help you zero in on the "right" college for them. It really takes the stress out of the college search.

I use this book in my college planning business.

Not helpful. The worksheets lead to nowhere and the advice about how to pick a college, include "talk to your parents" and "check out the college planning apps available for your smartphone". Not worth buying

I had to buy this for school. Repetitive in places, but I think it's a good start for the college bound.

Seems to be a worthwhile book. However, the pages were out of order in the edition we received.

I thought it was quite good. I am having my daughter who is a Junior in high school read it and complete the worksheets. Don't know at this point how beneficial it is.

Delightfully loopy story of a maiden aunt, her Anglican vicar, the narrator, their mentally disturbed camel and the occasional hangers-on who embark on a trip into the remoter parts of the Middle East in search of ancient architecture. Engaging semi-satire opened up by occasional bursts of grace. I know of no other book quite like THE TOWERS OF TREBIZOND and while not everyone will like it as much as I do, it's definitely worth checking out.

Read this as part of a challenge on Goodreads. Thoroughly enjoyed it and think that it is one of those novels that can be read more than once to gain further insight.The story unfolds through the eyes of Laurie as she travels with her eccentric Aunt Dot and the High Anglican Father Hugh Chantry-Pigg. Their mission is to "spread the word" to the Muslim world.Along the way they encounter various "personalities". This novel has a wonderful opening line that sets the tone for the story. I really enjoyed these eccentric and intrepid travellers along with the camel who has a starring role. This is more than a travel book and there are some wonderful insights from Laurie. It's written of a bygone era and I doubt that I'd undertake to travel alone through Turkey on a cantankerous camel let alone sample unknown elixirs of dubious quality.The characters are somewhat "dotty" and otherworldly, quite delightful overall. There are serious themes throughout the novel it's not all "light" reading fare.

This review is a slightly reworded version of a comment I have written in reply to another review, but wanted to add a little more.I picked up this book not expecting what I got. It was compulsively readable from the first page, and I read it straight through. And even though I'm far from a religious person, or even a believer, I found it a lot to respond to. I'd like to read it again -- which is always one test of a good book -- with all I know and guessed in mind.In other reviews I was surprised to see people referring to Laurie as 'she.' I had always assumed from the start that Laurie was a man, and that Vere (which I pronounced in my head as 'Vera' - a very British name) was a woman. So, the end of the book was rather a shock, but ever so much more moving. I thought back on how careful Macauley was with pronouns, so, if I was mistaken about Laurie's gender, others could have been confused about Vere's.A complex book of philosophy, religion, history and travel it was never dull. Though it was described in the squibbs on the back cover as funny I really didn't see it that way. There was humor, but it was always wry and a bit sardonic. The theme that seemed the strongest thread through the story is identity. Who are we? Who do others think we are? Are we all of us spies pretending to be someone else? Ultimately to me it is a sad book with glimmers of hope shining through like those towers of Trebizond in Laurie's opium dream.

The pidgin repeats words for emphasis, in this case probably the passers-by are noting that my daughters are clearly related but obviously not twins.Recently, I received as gifts both Rose Macaulay’s 1956 novel: The Towers of Trebizond about a trip on camel back through Turkey and also Jesse Zink’s 2014: Backpacking through the Anglican Communion. With both books set in the context of “The Worldwide Anglican Communion”, I guessed they might also be “same-same but different” so I thought to read them simultaneously.As a life-long American Episcopalian, for me “The Worldwide Anglican Communion” exists in mythic, fairy lands somewhere east of C.S. Lewis’s “Narnia” and west of the (original, not Disney!) A.A. Milne’s Pooh books. For all I know (or care) Milne may have been a stout atheist, it doesn’t much matter… it just seems to me that a chorus of “I Sing a Song of the Saints of God” would be a good way to finish any reading aloud of a chapter in Winnie-the-Pooh or … You know, “you can meet them in school, or in lanes, or at sea, in church or in trains, or in shops or at tea…”About a third of the way through both books, I decided that “Trebizond” was written by Winnie the Pooh as an adult, while “Backpacking” was by an adult Christopher Robin. I finished “Backpacking” hopeful that a third book in the set will be written someday, authored by some Kanga or Rabbit or Tigger, just now being baptized in Nigeria or the South Sudan or maybe China.Macaulay’s “Trebizond” starts as a light-hearted journey by Laurie and her aunt Dot, with Dot’s nameless and insane white camel and with the aptly named divine, “Father Chantry-Pigg”. The narrator, Laurie, is as winsome and accessible as Winnie-the-Pooh. The English trio travel by ship from England, up the Aegean coast of Turkey, to Istanbul and then by Black Sea steamer to the eastern city of Trebizond. They are off on a mission to evangelize Turkey, as aunt Dot is of the opinion that Turkish women would be better served by her unveiled Anglican faith, as a replacement to their veiled Islam. Aunt Dot has many opinions….Same-same but different. Zink’s book is serious, but like Macauley’s narrator, Zink is fair and open minded. He travels to individual Anglican churches set around the world, from China to South America; but mostly in Africa: like South Africa, South Sudan, Nigeria and Uganda. He reports on their buildings, their people, their challenges and their joys. The differences between the individual congregations are striking: he debunks the American/European stereotype of a monolithic “African Church”. It’s also clear that each church congregation is set in its country and culture: from the prosperity theology he sees in the worship of Anglicans in booming chaotic Nigeria to the subsistence survival focus of theology students at Bishop Gwynne College in Juba, South Sudan.Same-same but different. On the way to Trebizond, Laurie’s narrative “voice”, really an impressive creation, is introduced. The first stages of the journey are charmingly recounted, but it seemed to be moving along paths maybe a bit too “precious”, through the same country covered by Virginia Hudson’s thin, winsome but oh-too-twee “O Ye Jigs & Juleps”, beloved of my mother (also a life-long Episcopalian). Of course the 1950s setting of “Trebizond” was a different time for Anglicans, as it was for most all “Western” institutions, and but still I worried that with “Trebizond” I had committed to a novel length slog, rather like having second thoughts after setting off on a 10 day bus tour through Luxemburg; just too much of a so-so thing.Not too worry. In Trebizond, the story takes conjurer’s potion and crystallizes into Laurie’s personal journey. Her travels home see her back through Turkey, Syria, Jordan, the new-then state of Israel (those were the days, to travel by camel from Syria to Haifa!), and back home to England. Yes, there is a love story, as I said, this is Winnie-the-Pooh as an adult.This was one of Macaulay’s last works and her descriptions of Turkish scenery and Middle Eastern settings are wonderful… I love travelogues and it’s rare for a work of fiction to be so satisfactory as a travelogue. While, as fiction, her characters are not as rich as Zink’s, the book’s sub-text: the unique nature of an individual’s spiritual journey, is a strong harmonic counterpoint to “Backpacking”’s subtext: the unique setting of each congregation’s path. Both sub-texts settle comfortably in the latitudinarian folds of “The Worldwide Anglican Communion”.Same-same but different. As a travel writer, Zink is at his best describing people…. They come alive and the conversations seem as real as the breakfast table talks at my house. He is such an enthusiastic journeyer and trekker down off-the-beaten paths that I can only wish his skills at conjuring up the images to share with “mind’s eye travelers” will improve… Just thinking of the places he’s taken his readers through makes me want to sign up for a return journey-read after he completes a year at, say, “The Iowa Writers Workshop”. (His bona fides as a divine having already been stamped at Yale Divinity School).Aside from people he chats up on visits to churches in England, it seems that in his conversations in the “Third World”, most wanted to see Zink’s American Episcopal Church through their reaction to its modern, “Western” acceptance of diverse sexual orientation, especially as crystallized for the Africans in the ordination of Gene Robinson, an openly gay man, as bishop of New Hampshire. “Is he bishop only for gays?” As Christopher Robin would, Zink presents these conversations without cringing and without condescension. The book’s strongest point is his steering these discussions towards “what we share in common as Anglican Christians”; navigation even more difficult than the four-wheel-drive slides through muddy tracks along back roads in South Sudan, exchanges charged with risky potential that seemed as explosive as the mines, armed men and automatic weapons sown deeply in the soil of that just-born country..The end of Zink’s travels is to make his case: for each individual church congregation he’s visited, with its own setting, with its own strengths and challenges, the local communities engendered by the Anglican tradition can provide a path towards a Christ-redeemed, Spirit-enlightened, God-illuminated world.Same-same but different.

It's always good to see an old favorite returned to print after many years. This always helps a new generation of readers to enjoy some writing that interested their previous generation. This book is touted as a very funny work, but I didn't think that it was all that humorous, at least to my mind. That isn't to say that I didn't enjoy the book, because I did, very much. The characters were well-drawn, and the travelogue portion of the work was first-rate. I thought of the book as more of a meditation on religion and its meaning to various people in the story, and I just loved the word pictures that the author painted on almost every page! Humor is in the mind of the beholder, and some of the book was indeed humorous; not in a laugh out loud vein, but rather in a quiet chuckling way. The work shows its age a bit, being almost 50 years old, but that doesn't make any diference in the story line. This is a good book to read, whatever your reason, and I highly recommend it.

I came to this book at the recommendation of a physician as I struggle to help my teenage daughter manage her gut-driven autoimmune issues, which include food sensitivity-driven hyper permeable gut and anaphylactic shock and multiple incidents of anaphylactic shock, and most recently a severe and life-altering vasculitis. Her rheumatologist, immunologist, and gastroenterologist call her the mystery girl, but her integrative physician told us to focus on food and what her body tells us. Enter Farmacology, which is life changing for my family. We already ate "organic" and thought we were keeping heavy doses of hormones, antibiotics, processing/chemicals, modern gluten, and processed sugar out of her and our bodies. After reading Farmacology, I'm convinced we aren't, and that we're missing vital microbes and even helpful bacterias etc., so we're refocusing on knowing our food growers and growing food ourself in a more biodynamic model, and on eliminating the heavily homogenized/pasteurized milk sold on our chain stores shelves in favor of locally sourced and less processed milk, and less of it altogether. There's so much I could say about the intelligence, curiosity, common sense, caring, and readability of this book, but I'm sure you get the picture: I loved it and appreciated it. Highly recommended.

I searched for this book after watching a documentary that featured Dr. Miller. I wanted to find out more about her and her belief systems in regards to health and healing. I was not disappointed. I have just started dabbling in this idea of moving away from Western medicine. I am a RN and I see that what we are doing doesn't always help, and I am disappointed how little we emphasize diet in our treatment. Dr. Miller spoke to this part of me. This book is nicely organized and the concepts that she discusses are so basic, and yet we in this "modern" society seem to have forgotten the basics. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a new view point. Or to anyone who has had a doctor tell them there is nothing wrong,

A rich bibliography and references shows the authors knowledge not only in Medicine, but biology, ecology and sociology, plus a sensibility for naturopathy and creation care. As a family practitioner M.D (Retired) I feel sure the author fits my philosophy of medicine as 85% healing and 15% science that is hard to find in the current practice of medicine

I basically just want to agree with the majority here. This is a wonderful book full of information that all of us should be learning about the foods we are eating, and how better to grow it. The forays into her meetings with those she interviews for the book are delightful.The only reason I dropped it to 4 stars was to warn those that haven't done any research on food, gardening, or even organic gardening and how it affects our health may find it a tad too technical. I had some problems grasping a few of the ideas. But then again that's why I liked it so much. It made me want to go out and find more answers when I had questions.I definitely agree with the reviews that hope that more in the medical community will read and heed the advice in this book!To be fair I did pick this up on a phenomenal sale on Amazon for $1.99. I'm not sure if I would have gambled on it at full price. But I would have missed out tremendously if I hadn't!

The thought that a Medical Doctor has invested so much into an investigation of the connections between farming practices, farm products and the body's ability to thrive is worth a peek. It is an easy read and it is filled with relatable examples of why its ideas are relevant for me. While reading this book, I have found several 'aha' moments and have reflected on non-genetic, non-traumatic health issues of almost everyone I know. I have a new filter for seeing, tasting and choosing healthful foods for fueling my body, and those of my growing children, (and even my mother).In talking with some friends about these ideas, conversations are either all or none. I have seen renewed interest in people growing their own food or obtaining foods from conscientious farmers. But more frequently, I have met arguments about the economic, logistical and functional challenges to feeding everyone with foods grown by these methods. I am considering our (my family to start) physiological future.We always hear that the keys to optimal health are diet and exercise, well the word 'diet' has a new lens for me. In reading books, looking over research studies and watching what seems to be working, (and not working), my own health journey leads me to my current reflection: that in conjunction with the need for exercise, I must consider what this book has to teach us all about our food.

With some background in science, I have been satisfied with a systems or more holistic approach. Miller gave me a lot to think about. I loved her parallels between the biomass on the farm and in the human body. She did make me nervous with her testimonial about essential oils but her other observations makes me want to explore further. I intend to grow a garden and read more of her books.

Fairly written for christians, and may feel like if you don't become a Christian, your life wouldn't pan out good or if you don't follow the doctrines of Christianity you won't have a loving and fulfilling life and or relationship.Would be nice to have a perspective for those who aren't Christians as some of the content may be unbearable if you don't fully understand the ins and outs of the religion, but I'm sure there are other books out there that cater to the less religious folk.With that aside, I give this read a solid 8, the only downfall as I said before was the in-comprehensiveness for those not deeply involved in the religion to practice and apply why is being expressed.-Regardless, the points engrained are phenomenal. Discussing the loneliness and temptation we all face, including the trend of having a significant other, this read has critical points for both guys and girls. We seem to always look for our worth in a significant other, and most times we settle. The authors battle the importance of not giving in, of fighting temptation because often when we take the reigns of our life for temporary fulfillment, we bring heartache. There are various testimonies within the pages to support this claim, which I'm sure many other individuals can vouch that choosing someone out of loneliness sometimes brings more harm than good.-The fundamental point is that if you chase God, find yourself within him rather than in others, and apply his core values for a relationship, than even though it may be difficult; (through the testimony of both authors), you would find the relationship you've always dreamed of. If we follow the creator rather than the creation, we find a life worth living.-Continue to chase God. He’ll show you the way.

I'm 21, single, in college and have briefly dated guys-- sometimes going farther than I'm proud of. This book has spoken so much to my heart and spirit. While reading this, I've felt encouraged by the different stories, scriptures and advice. Their story is genuinely written and their heart for everyone to have a God-written story is uplifting. This is a great read, I honestly kept wanting to read more and more. If there are more books along these lines, I would love to hear about them!

I absolutely loved, recommended, and honestly credit this book for helping me find my future husband. I'm 26, but though this book is geared toward a little younger it just spoke to me about trusting him and believing that I could stop running and chasing after guys. I read this book and 2 months later I realized I have my future husband in my life. One that straight up told me today that he's been praying for me. (We've been best friends for a year and just recently became official.) Even if you're unsure about your faith and what God has planned for you. Just read this book!!! I can't say it enough.

Good book, but Meant for younger girls. Middle to early high school. It was not really right for 23 year old. Description should reflect that.

I couldn't have asked for a better book for young ladies! Kyle and Kelsey Kupecky share real life (their lives) stories with readers to encourage them to CHASE after God first and not man. This book is truthfully and beautifully written in a way thats easy to understand and relate to. I am encouraged and motivated after reading this book to not be focused on my future spouse but instead on God. He already has a plan for my life and I (and all of us young ladies) need to trust him with whatever he has in store for us for our futures. I highly recommend this book to all young ladies out there. Single, dating, attached, married; I believe this book will touch you all in different ways. If I could give this book more than 5/5, I would but alas! :)

Highly recommended. Purchased for my 20 year old daughter upon recommendation from a friend. She was 5 days into a dating relationship with a guy who is a Christian but neither had carefully thought through best advice for dating and guidelines— letting him lead, pursuing God First, etc. She finished the book and immediately on her own discussed with her new boyfriend some healthy guidelines they wanted to establish to have a healthy Christ centered relationship. Grateful for the timely advice....so great to get helpful tips even for married couples.

I truly believe that this book can help young and old believers in Christ in having happy endings. This book is dedicated too young Christians was struggling with trying to find a mate. it is for all young and older children of God I was truly amazed by the dedication the love respect and honor Kyle and Kelsey show to each other. thank you for this amazing book I've learned so much. I do feel that this book can be a learning tool for any Ministry dealing with youth or women or men in the church. I'm definitely going to use it in the women Ministry in my church.

It might be better for girls who haven't read other books about dating. As a 23 year old, I knew most of this information from either experience or other books. The authors write in a back and forth method, which is kind of unique. It is nice to get a male perspective.
