About the Author

NICHOLAS IRVING spent six years in the Army's Special Operations 3rd Ranger Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment, serving from demolitions assaulter to Master Sniper. He was the first African American to serve as a sniper in his battalion and is now the owner of HardShoot, where he trains personnel in the art of long-range shooting, from Olympians to members of the Spec Ops community. The difference especially between the males & females of both of our cultures are detailed in a shocking and sinister way. Not really an autobiography as much as a highly readable account of a single deployment in Afghanistan, but the author comes off as an intelligent, honest, and highly skilled soldier. I've often wondered how the members of our professional military can endure multiple combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan without becoming disillusioned by the futility of attempting to help liberate people who neither want nor appreciate that help, and, in fact, see them as both infidels and invaders. Irving describes that burgeoning disillusionment beautifully, with no rancor or bitterness, and Brozek does a fine job of capturing his feelings and giving his story flow and interest. The truth I took from this is that even the best soldiers, and Rangers are definitely some of the finest, most disciplined and skilled soldiers in the world, cannot liberate a people unready and unwilling to liberate themselves. We may have accomplished some nebulous geopolitical goals in those wars, but liberating Iraq or Afghanistan were probably not among them. It makes me wonder whether our efforts were ever worth the life of even one Corporal Kopp, much less all the lives we sacrificed. While it makes me proud to read about men like Nicholas Irving and the men of his Ranger platoon, I can't help thinking that we owe them clearer goals and worthier causes if we're going to ask them to risk their lives for us. Such men are the backbone of this country, and their lives should never be squandered in uncertain wars and actions. There will come a day, after all, when our nation will truly need such men for its own survival, as it has in the past, and it would be a shame to discover at that point that we have used them up senselessly in wars fought for dubious reasons. That said, one can take nothing away from those men who stood and fought at their country's request. They did the jobs required of them selflessly and often heroically. If there is fault in their story it is solely ours who sat home safely while they went back and back and back again to war in far off hell holes. We should be careful what we ask of our best and bravest.

It makes for exciting reading if you're into the genre. The author served as an Army sniper in the Middle East and certainly saw combat action, lots of it. Underlying all the action the reader cannot help but notice the brotherhood of the soldiers. You have to live the situation to understand one fact. At the base level, the atomic level, combat is all about your brother next to you. Fear of dying is offset by the fear of letting down your brothers. This aspect comes through loud and clear. Death before dishonor.The author does an autobiographical bit, too, and adding to the flavor of the book making the reading much more enjoyable.

I purchased the book because I heard about Nicholas Irving from the Demolition Ranch YouTube channel. I thought and I still do think that he is an American hero and I like to support our heroes anyway I can; including purchasing items that support them financially. The book is an okay read, but I personally find it factually challenged. Although I served 44 years prior, I was initially the crew chief of a CH-47 Chinook helicopter and later a Ranger (SQI 18B). As an example, in his book, Nicholas comments on the diesel fuel smell from the Chinook helicopters he has flown in - although helicopters run aviation fuel and not diesel. The two fuels do not smell anything alike. It's funny in a way and all of us do it. If a particular story gets the facts wrong in a profession or skill that we have command of, then the entire story is discounted.Nicholas also describes a firefight between Taliban combatants while they, the Taliban, were engaged in a Man on Man orgy of sorts. Seems a bit far-fetched that Islamic terrorists, in the midst of a jihad in Afghanistan, would be having gay sex - side by side, only to be caught by a US Army strike force with their pants down.

The book has the right amount of time at each scene, a with great descriptions of the action. If you like Special Ops stuff, this book adds another, different perspective to most other stuff already out there.I would have given it 5 stars, but the book starts a bit slow, has too much autobiography stuff in the beginning, and "special forces" was used where it should have been "Special Operations."Hey, Irv...nice tribute to Kopp. RLTW!

Book arrived in good time. Condition was excellent pages crisp and no creases. Back cover started to yellow but all Osprey Publishing books will do that with time even if kept in good storage. Was well satisfied.

This is just the WW2 source I was looking for.

The volumes in this series generally mix campaign history (and the context of a war as a whole) with commentary on weapons, uniforms, and equipment. And Katcher is a very experienced military historian who generally does exactly that, but this volume -- a revision of the original 1977 edition -- concentrates instead on the Army's combat and service dress and backs it up with frequent quotations from and references to the actual regulations and other official sources. For the collector, or even just the detail-oriented, this is a gold mine. Katcher provides the best discussions I've seen of what "olive drab" actually means (it's actually a whole spectrum of numbered shades), the psychology of dressing for comfort instead of for show (like the British, often), and why the M1 helmet is still perhaps the single best item of military gear ever designed in this country. There's also a good deal more subtlety involved in the design and tailoring of a modern military uniform than most of us might expect. The color plates and their very detailed captions are, as nearly always, excellent.

Carter Rila's assessment of this book is correct. It is an older title, and while it is well written and contains useful information, it is misnamed. It appears to be a survey of US Army uniforms and personal field equipment - the text contains little else. Weapons, organization, history are all absent. The bare bones descriptions of uniforms fail to address the subject adequately, and the use of direct quotes from Army regulations seems to be more of a waste of space than a selling point.Good photographs from contemporary sources, though these can probably be found in Stanton. Current photos of artifacts photographed in harsh lighting and not terribly useful; especially photo of divisional and army shoulder patches which is murky.Colour plates would be only reason to buy this book. Collingwood has a gritty, softer style than Chappell, Volstad or Hook, but illustrates well the major uniform types. Facial expressions don't seem to change much - all the figures look so grim! - but there is a bit of variety in the poses and facial features.Much useful info on uniforms - the main purpose of the book - but this info is found in greater detail in many other volumes. The author and illustrator can be forgiven as I am sure that when this book first came out, much of what was contained had not been published in the mainstream.

This book is well illustrated but tries to cover too much in too little space. When such as Shelby Stanton (c.f.) devote whole books to the WW II clothing alone and others to individual equipment it is no longer needed.The publisher has realized this and has brought out a new three volume set in this series covering the same era. The publisher should simply let this one go out of print. Its day is past.

We wanted to get this one to go with our 40th. Wanted to complete our Foxfire books. Stories are always good because they are about old times and ways.

I am hooked on these books and this one meets my expectations just as it's predecessors have done. This book continues the tradition of preserving the history, culture, and folkways of southern Appalachia. Over the years, the production costs have caused the books to be a little less sturdy but that is the only negative I found. If you have read and enjoyed any other Foxfire publications then you will probably enjoy this one too, especially if you love gospel and mountain music and the instruments peculiar to the region.

I purchased this book for my son's birthday and I knew he would enjoy it since he has been collecting the Foxfire books for several years. He loves the out doors and a simple way of life we have lost but the books are almost a step back into that time. This particular issuse is also a celebration of the popularity of these books for all these years. I read them as a young mother and I'm happy my son wants them in his library. They are timeless so if you enjoy knowing the old ways of living you will love the Foxfire series.

Coming from Appalachia, this book brought back a lot of memories for me. Reading about the daily life of those that lived in Appalachia was dead on.

I bought this book for my 79-year-young grandmother... she has the collection of Foxfire books, but had not seen this one. She told me last night it's a great addition to the collection, and she was going through the stories with me. I'm hopeful that I can read these books one day!

Rhea Combs is a curator at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture and head of the museum’s Earl W. and Amanda Stafford Center for African American Media Arts. Combs has written several articles on gender, sexuality, and African American visual culture as well as curated shows at museums both nationally and internationally, including: ICA-London, Spelman College and the Schomburg Center for Black Culture. Combs was a former photo curator for the international advertising firm, Wieden+Kennedy.Deborah Willis has pursued a dual professional career as an art photographer and as one of the nation's leading historians of African American culture. Beautiful and poingant photographs by African American and other photographers (selected from the large and growing photography collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture), accompanied by three short, insightful essays, reveal the rich and significant contributions African Americans have made to to our great American heritage.

This is a beautiful book with fantastic photography from a bygone era. Everyone grabs it from my coffee table and thoroughly enjoys leafing through the fabulous photos.

The content appears to be good but it's inadequate as far as size. The print and pictures are difficult for this senior's eyes. I would have paid more to have a more sizable book maybe with additional content. Just a major disappointment. For those of us who can't get to the new museum a handsome coffee table book would be just what we need.

I wanted a larger, hard cover version of this book.
