After going through the Puma section, I'm not sure if the author is not knowledgeable enough or if he purposely left information out (e.g. he does not mention that the Puma has different sub-brands, one made in Germany and the rest abroad, and so he does not make a distinction between the quality of Germany made knife like the White Hunter and the lower quality of some Chinese-made SGB knives). It is a similar story when you go through the Boker section. Additionally, I am not sure about the rationale behind the selection of knives he decided to show. Finally, there is no description of the knives selected to include, only a few technical details. On the other hand, the Kindle version of the book works great on my chrome based tablet.

This has most of the more commercially available knife manufacturers and lists a few of their knives. This is by no means a comprehensive list of makers and their work. Each maker has a write up by the author, giving the reader the background on the manufacturers and then listing the authors personal favorites. If you are looking for a really in depth book on knives, this is not it. It skims the surface of the bigger names in knife manufacturing (Case, Spyderco, Bear & Son, Hogue, etc). It has pictures with its selection of knives from the makers. There are no custom knife makers in the book.In the front of the book, there are a few articles presented on various topics.Overall, it's a nice, basic knife book.

For all-around, general, information for someone who did not have a previous knowledge of knives, this is a fine book to start with. I had hoped it had more detailed information on survival knives, but it barely touched on that particular subject. And it has way too much space devoted to manufacturer's names and addresses. But, again, I'm sure some people would enjoy it.

Very, VERY similar to the previous edition. Heavy on pretty pictures of knives. Light on actual substance. In our humble opinion, it's not worth the money spent. YMMV.

My husband is a big knife collector and has been buying the Gun version of this "Shooters Bible" book for many years. He was quite delighted with this knife version of information. Basically in the same format as the gun version. It is an awesome reference book for knives of all types. Shipped promptly, packaged nicely and arrived in perfect condition.

A simple, cheap purchase like this is essential to anyone who wants to research or learn more about knife basics before diving into a $100 knife and up! I found it used by even new its probably less then $20. Contains a myriad of knives and manufacturers plus designers. Goes over different blade deployment methods and carry style. Most of all I have lots of knives are easily comparable in an easy to locat emanner instead of searching online for hours. Of course new products will come out and no be in here, but this will always give you the basics to start with .

This Guide to Knives book just shows representative samples but some very excellentmakers ( Bear & Son, for example) aren't even listed. At least one page should have been devoted to most commonly used steels and handle materials and far too manypages were on various kinds of sharpeners. In fact , the book might have been moreappropriately titled " A Guide to Sharpeners".

Great book with lots of interesting information. I would recommend it as a starting point for anyone interested in purchasing a new knife.

For as much information as the author compiled, you would think that the narrative would be gripping. Instead, it turned out to be a dud.What Richard M. Lytle accomplished was writing a detailed account of the origins of Hammond, Indiana and a chronicle of railroad activities through the area. The book is small at a mere 99 pages, and at least half of that had little to do with the incident.However, it served as a good point of origin for the further research on this subject. If you know very little about it, it's a good primer. If you are familiar with circus history and railroad history, you could probably skip this book. It was a detached viewpoint, dry narrative and poorly edited. Instead, we are left thinking, "what might have been" if a better writer had access to the same information as Lytle did.

This tragic tale of a circus train catastrophe seems to be relatively unknown outside the area in which it occurred. It's a very short book and the actual train accident only accounts for a few pages. The beginning of the book is heavy on detail about the rail system and the budding towns alongside the railway. There is of course some history about the forging of this particular circus and the reader learns a little about the circus members themselves. The last portion of the book describes improvements in rail cars since the accident. My rating of a 3 is really more generous than I'd typically give a book that only superficially discussed the event itself. However, it would seem callous to judge a book about the horrific loss of life and the devastation of countless families on quality of writing alone.

Warren Reeder's "No Performances Today", from about 1970 is a vastly better treatment of this subject -- in particular what happened to the survivors, and to the estates of those killed or maimed for life, in the decade-long aftermath. This shows me a highly biased slant in favor of the Michigan Central railroad, and an indefensible court/jury decissions. You can read Reeder's book via intra-library loan from the library in Dallas, Texas.Here I am again three years later, and I'll try to amplify the above. Although the historical review of early beginnings around Hammond, Indiana is informative, the treatment of the train wreck itself and it's aftermath is appalling, especially in view of the Interstate Commerce Commission report and Warren Reeder's book. Both are abundantly clear in showing who was at fault, here, and who bore the responsibility for restitution: The Michigan Central Railroad. They paid a few dollars north of zero, for the horrific loss of life and employability, to say nothing of those killed. To a veteran railroader, Lytle's book reads like a revisionist cover-up of the Michigan Central's callous treatment of the victims. Since the MEC is long defunct, absorbed by the New York Central and then Conrail, this book's content leaves one dumbstruck that a modern writer would write something so, so unnecessary. Just read the recorded comments of Alonzo Sargent, locomotive engineer, Michigan Central.

A tragic story, and a must read for those who loved/love the circus. It is incredibly touching and a book that will hold your interest from beginning to end.

Great review of a forgotten piece of history.

This book was very interesting and well researched. It is about a part of Lake County Indiana history that many people do not have much knowledge about. The author's writing made it very easy to understand what the circus was like at the time of the crash and how, exactly, this crash happened. I learned a lot and enjoyed reading it which is all you can ask for.
