Well, birds are my favorite subject for portraits, so to say I eagerly awaited this book’s release is an understatement :-). And to cut to the chase, this book is the best bird photography book I’ve read to date — really. The author’s passion for birds comes through in the book’s introduction which bodes well — always helpful to photograph what you love. Not to mention that one of the very first photos is of two puffins touching beak-to-beak in an apparently affectionate way. Wow! The author humbly notes that luck had a lot to do with that particular shot. I love that for every photograph she gives not only the camera settings, but the equipment she used. Quite helpful! I noticed that she used flash on a photo of a duck in one of the first pics in the book and I’m eager to read later in the book how that works.I found very useful her advice on how to find out where birds are at a particular time. She gives website and other information on how to find out where the birds are when you want to photograph them. I much appreciate the time she spent explaining the strategy behind the autofocus system for photographing birds! It’s a complicated topic and she did a good job. I also heartedly agree with her recommendation to use back-button focus. Time well spent is the time the author describes for us how to stalk the birds, how to move so that you don’t frighten them and can get good pics. She also talks about types of blinds we can use to get closer. I didn’t even know there were types!Later in the book she discusses using fill flash to shoot birds and it’s one of the more helpful ways I’ve seen it discussed. In that section she points out that one reason to use flash is, if a bird has white feathers, it’s a much cleaner, brighter, more detailed result. So, now I think I’ll have to try it. She includes tips, among them head angles to look for in shooting a bird portrait, and I can say I have never seen that in another bird photography book. Especially her distinction between birds with binocular vision and those without because the angle you’re looking for differs accordingly. Who knew? I tend to shoot many of my birds in my own backyard so I appreciate her advice on how to attract birds as well as how to shoot ‘em.Of course any book and bird photography must have a section on capturing birds in flight but hers is especially informative. She explains how to configure the automatic focus system for flight pics and does it for Canon and for Nikkon. She also does quite a long section on pre-focusing which I haven’t seen before-usually it’s just a paragraph or two. Yay!At the end of the book she gives us a very welcome chapter on “ Bord photography hotspots“. She talks generally about where to find birds as well as giving many specific locations across the country. Got to make my travel plans!Again, after finishing the book, this is so far the best book I have read on bird photography. I look forward to reading other books by Marie Read.

Perhaps it’s because they require so much skill to photograph well. For whatever the reason, many photographers are attracted to capturing images of birds.Marie Read’s book covers every aspect of bird photography. The early part of the book includes chapters on equipment, exposure, and focusing, as well as a bit of field craft necessary to get close to birds, and composition. In later chapters she deals with content like photographing behavior, flight and the environment of birds. There is a short chapter on image editing and a listing of bird photography hotspots. She finishes by suggesting ways to show your work. None of this information constitutes introductory training for photography, but rather assumes the reader knows the basics, and aims at bird photography information.I prepared myself for a gotcha in the chapter on editing, and even though I wished for an explanation of some of the useful plug-ins, Read talked about just the specialized processing aspects for bird photography. I was delighted to find her suggestion that the details of white plumage could be pulled out with the judicious use of the highlights slider in either Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw. I’ve used this technique for years, but I’ve never seen it stated so succinctly.Read’s writing is clear and not overly technical, and even after twenty five years of bird photography, I could find no major points that were not covered. Read’s photographs show that she knows whereof she writes. The author is currently a Canon camera user, and though she makes reference to Nikon settings as well, sometimes I wished for just a bit more Nikon depth. (The author recommends the Nikon D5: I’m a lot happier doing bird photography with my D850. Also, add the newer very lightweight and fast focusing f5.6 500 mm to your Nikon big glass list.) If your primary camera is, say, an OMD E-MII you will have to make the translation to Olympus-speak on your own, but Read’s text will make that as easy as possible.Long-time bird photographers may not find much new in this book. On the other hand a few of the chapters inspired me to again try some other techniques.Twenty years ago, near the end of the film age, “The Art of Bird Photography” by Arthur Morris was the bible for bird photographers. Now it’s “Mastering Bird Photography”.

I enjoyed reading "A Year in Provence" years ago when it was first published, and since it was on the recommended reading list for our upcoming 3 week tour of France, I decided to re-read it. We will be spending some time in Provence, though not mingling with the locals to the extent that Mayle did when he and his wife moved from England and bought an old farm house to remodel and live year around. Mayle's adventures in hiring contractors and getting any work done on a reliable timetable are told humorously, thought with no disrespect to the French workers. They learn that in France, time is marked by seasons rather than days. They finally devise an ingenious method to get all the contractors to come back and complete the various unfinished projects around the house before Christmas - they send out invitations to a champagne reception to which the spouses are also invited. They know that none of the contractors will want their partners to be embarrassed by incomplete work !Mayle also writes of their journeys to visit fabulous restaurants and the French love of food and wine. He cultivates vines on his own property, and also learns to appreciate a perfect olive oil.The tales of the endless string of visitors, some mere casual acquaintances, and some of whom invite themselves to stay, are also told with humour and restraint, though you definitely get the impression that they felt put upon from time to time. I also discovered that it can be brutally hot during the summer months in Provence, so I'm glad we're going in early spring !"A Year in Provence" is not at all a travelogue, or even a guide book, but is a terrifically entertaining series of essays about living among the French in every season, being accepted (at least to a certain extent) into their culture, and enjoying all that this beautiful country has to offer.

We are traveling in Provence this summer, and a friend recommended that I find and read this book to get a feel for the area. Although it is an older book and times surely have changed somewhat in the almost twenty-five years since it was written, I found it to be highly entertaining as I read about his experiences living in the area. His style is conversational, as if he were sitting in your living room for a chat. His descriptions of the local people, and semi-quoting their conversations is, at times, hilarious. Mayle also does a credible job depicting the countryside, food, travel, and slower lifestyle of the natives of the area. I found this book so entertaining that I also read two others: Toujours Provence, and Encore Provence:New Adventures in the South of France. If you're looking for an insight into the area of Provence France from someone other than a factual travel guide, I highly recommend Peter Mayle's books.

Too many French language descriptions. I have a problem with English speaking authors using French language to describe people or things, especially when English will do just fine. I have a cursory knowledge of French but I had to keep my dictionary nearby when I read this. Other than that, this was an enjoyable read, especially since my wife and I visited the area a month before I read the book.

The book is so well written that It makes you dream of living in Provence. I will be travelling soon to the places in Provence to enjoy the amazing food, beautiful places and friendly people in France. It is sad that Peter Mayle passed recently and I'm very grateful that he wrote this marvellous book.

Being a neophyte to the “travel literature” genre, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But in Peter Mayle’s book “A Year in Provence”, I was surprised how absorbing the reading experience was, without the need for a distinctive narrative plot thrust. After a career on Madison Avenue, Mayle uproots his life and takes residence in the quaint and quirky region of Provence, located in Southeast France. Mayle and his wife realize they have much to learn in navigating their new surroundings. The novel’s structure is quite simple—each chapter is a month in the year—but Mayle’s observations cut into the essence of Provencal life, not just the hidden gems and signature qualities of the region, but reaches for the underlying motivations of the people, the way they move and think, and why no one seems to leave. Part of the enchantment is meeting all these characters—the plumber, the reclusive neighbor, the butcher, the unwanted guests. The prose is simplistic but thoroughly engaging, particularly when Mayle reveals small tidbits in timely places that echo latent cultural rivalries. One word of caution: don’t read on an empty stomach! (You’ll quickly realize what I mean)

I had to read this book as I was headed to Provençe for 2 weeks. I found the book very interesting. The author starts out with life in January and then each month there after. As the book progresses it gets more and more interesting how life is really like for an expat (from England). After we got settled in our apartment, I figured out we were staying within a few miles of where this author lives, though he never discloses exactly. I fell in love with the area from the first drive along narrow N900. At night, the sky is so crystal clear that you can see every star. We left just as the winds of the Fall were starting up. It was great place to visit and even better since I read this book. I don't think I could live here. The author set me straight on that one!

“Governor Reagan: His Rise to Power,” first published in 2003, is something of a “prequel” for veteran-political-journalist-turned-Reagan-biographer, Lou Cannon, who’s heralded critical assessment of the Reagan presidential administration, “President Reagan: The Role of a Lifetime,” appeared on bookshelves over a decade before this volume.“Governor Reagan” is made up of 30 chapters, each with a single adjectival word title. A sampling of a quick dozen fairly well tells the early story of Reagan as told by Cannon, and it’s a story far more flattering tale than his earlier account of Reagan’s presidential administration: Optimist, Storyteller, Actor, Politician, Visionary, Winner, Pragmatist, Conservative, Leader, Conservationist, Reformer, Salesman, Achiever.The book is broken into unequal thirds. The first, “The Rise of Ronald Reagan,” provides a relatively quick (126 pages) summary of Reagan’s rather humble and peripatetic youth in Illinois, the trials of being raised by an alcoholic father, and his improbable success in landing a coveted job in radio sports broadcasting in Des Moines in the darkest days of the Depression. And then, perhaps even more improbably, Reagan landed a long-term acting contract in Hollywood after just one screen test in 1937 (which he had finagled after following the Chicago Cubs to Spring Training on Catalina Island for his sports announcer job – and also included a short, but treacherous LA to Catalina flight that made Reagan a life-long terrified flier).In the first third of the book, Cannon suggests that four things dominated the psychological development of Ronald Reagan before he became a declared politician in 1966. First, during his formative youth, the Reagan family moved from town-to-town and house-to-house at an alarming velocity. Reagan had lived in over a dozen houses and many towns before his family more-or-less settled in tiny Dixon, Illinois when he had reached his high school years, depriving him, the author claims, of close childhood friends and a sense of roots. Second, Reagan is, according to Cannon, a classic “child-of-an-alcoholic” (as is Cannon, it must be noted). His Irish-Catholic father, Jack, a natural storyteller and off-and-on traveling salesman, claimed a strong hold on Reagan, and his embarrassing benders left an indelible and shattering impression on the future president, none more so than the memory of dragging his prostrated, inebriated father in off the family porch on a cold winter afternoon when Reagan was still an adolescent. But he also absorbed from his father the art of storytelling. And Reagan would ultimately become “a storyteller who made the facts fit the story, rather than building his story on the facts,” according to Cannon. Third, Reagan’s six years as a lifeguard on the treacherous Rock River were “decisive in transition from boy to man,” according to the author. Finally, when fellow actor and first wife Jane Wyman left him in 1948 after 8 years of marriage, Reagan was left shell-shocked and disconsolate, a man approaching middle age whose life had suddenly and unexpectedly been ripped asunder. The upshot, according to Cannon and many others, was that Reagan forever closed himself off emotionally. No one, not even his beloved Nancy, let alone dedicated and loyal political operatives, would ever penetrate Reagan’s psyche. Yet, these dour experiences somehow coalesced to create an implacable determination and an irrepressible “relentless optimism” that were the keys to Reagan eventually becoming president of the United States, according to the author.The second third, and by far the longest at 264 pages, is “Governor Reagan,” and really the meat of the book. A few items are worth noting. First, Reagan was the darkest of dark horses when he took on two-term Democrat Pat Brown in 1966. In fact, the Democratic Party was so confident against Reagan that they played dirty tricks against his GOP rival, former San Francisco mayor George Christopher, to ensure the nomination of “the light-weight actor” Ronald Reagan. He was widely viewed as a “right-wing clone of Goldwater, minus the latter’s experience”…”an out-of-work actor who was trading on his celebrity status to launch a political career.”It would be a mistake that Democrats would make again, and again, and again, according to Cannon. Indeed, “Reagan remained underestimated until the end,” he says (and “by the end,” he means the end of his second presidential term).Incumbent Governor Brown tried to make light of Reagan’s acting background. His campaign commercials showed him talking to a group of elementary school students, with the governor quipping, “I’m running against an actor. And you know who shot Lincoln, right?” But, far from being apologetic about his professional roots in Hollywood, Reagan embraced them, according to Cannon. “Acting was not a phase of Reagan’s life,” he says, “but the essence of it.” And, so too, was his time as head of the Screen Actors Guild. Cannon focuses in on four topics in particular: university campus politics, environmental conservation, welfare reform, and tax reduction.Reagan tapped into a strong populist chord when he took an uncompromising “Follow the rules or get out” attitude toward late 1960s campus unrest in California at Berkeley, San Francisco State and UC Santa Barbara. He also led the charge to introduce tuition for in-state college education (as crazy as that sounds today to this longtime California resident). Cannon claims that Reagan’s overall record on higher education is much better than generally remembered. The overall higher education budget rose 136% during Reagan’s two terms as governor, compared to 100% for other areas. Moreover, Reagan granted 90% of higher education budget requests over his two terms versus liberal Democrat Pat Brown’s 95%. Not a bad record, indeed.As for environmental conservation, Cannon concludes that it was never a top priority for Reagan, but nevertheless his legacy as California governor is actually quite positive, thanks to Ike Livermore, his appointee for environmental affairs (who was every bit as good as future Reagan administration Secretary of the Interior James Watt was bad). Ultimately, Governor Reagan blocked both a major dam on the Eel River on Native American land in far northern California and a proposed Trans-Sierra Highway that would have cut through the famed John Muir Trail. Both of these moves were celebrated by liberal institutions, such as the Sierra Club. Indeed, even the healthily critical Cannon concedes: “Governor Reagan saved the wild rivers of the north coast, and he saved the John Muir Trail. It is a valuable legacy.”Reagan’s crowning achievements as California Governor – a record that he would ultimately run on to gain the presidency less than a decade after leaving Sacramento – were welfare reform and tax reduction. Cannon stresses the partnership between Reagan and Robert Moretti, California’s powerful Democratic Speaker of the House and successor to former Reagan bête noir, Jesse Unruh, who was defeated by Reagan handedly in the 1970 election 53% to 45%, even though California registered voters were 56% Democrat and 40% Republican.Reagan’s California Welfare Reform Act was a cornerstone achievement. It reduced those eligible for welfare by 35% while increasing the payout to those truly in need of government assistance. It also burnished Reagan’s credentials with those conservatives nationally, who, like the governor, believed that “the government is supposed to promote the general welfare…[not] provide it.” Senate Bill 90, meanwhile, increased property tax relief while increasing education funding by $300M, a national record at the time.In Cannon’s far-from-gentle assessment, Reagan’s eight years as Governor of the largest state in the union was “on balance more positive than negative.” Despite his conservative “cut and trim” rhetoric, under Reagan the California state budget increased from $4.6 billion annually to $10.2 billion, a record of “achievement” that he would eventually bring to Washington.The final third, “The Pursuit of the Presidency,” provides insight into the six-year interregnum between Reagan’s governorship and his election to the presidency, during which he was never out of the spotlight and always the darling of American conservatives. Cannon claims that, “Republican misfortunes paved the path for opportunity for Ronald Reagan throughout his political career.” First it was Nixon’s gubernatorial defeat in 1962, and then Goldwater’s landslide defeat in the 1964 presidential election, and finally Nixon’s 1974 resignation over Watergate and Ford’s subsequent unconditional pardon. All of this brought the GOP to its nadir as only 18% of Americans identified as Republican in the late 1970s. From the ashes, Reagan would rebuild the party on a fundamentally libertarian philosophy of individual freedom and limited government.Reagan genuinely believed that he was a common man for the common man, or as he claimed “citizen-politician.” He used that expression from the start of gubernatorial run in 1966 and stuck with it throughout his presidency. Cannon argues that it was Reagan’s sincere belief in himself as a “citizen-politician” that was the ultimate “secret of his political success.For anyone looking to understand “early Reagan,” this is a great place to start. Cannon would be the last to canonize Reagan, but he would also be the last to dismiss him as simple-minded and overrated. I recommend it without reservation.

Lou Cannon was a reporter for the San Jose Mercury-News and covered Reagan's eight years as governor in Sacramento. As a result, this book is based on many personal interviews with Reagan and his staff, detailed research, and several other published works on Reagan's early life.Cannon used an interesting approach in organizing the book with each chapter describing titled with one word that describes a "role" that Reagan played at that time in his life, such as Announcer, Actor, Conservative, Pragmatist, etc. He describes Reagan's youth and early career in the Midwest, narrates how he came to Hollywood, analyzes his films, and discusses his work with the Screen Actors Guild. He shows how Reagan's work with General Electric Theater was a key turning point for him to move into politicsl. In summary, he understands Reagan's character, motivation, and goals, which is no small feat, given Reagan's very private nature.Cannon is very fair in assessing Reagan, not taking political sides in the controversies of the day. He lays out Reagan's vision, as well as the pragmatic compromises that he was forced to make in the governorship. The book describes Reagan's six-year campaign for the his first presidential nomination in 1980 and ends with his electoral victory in 1980.The many stories and anecdotes told by Reagan make this book well worth reading, and Cannon's writing is highly interesting as well. The best book I've seen that deals with blending your fibers for color. Deb sticks to this specific subject throughout the book. I have been working with colors and fibers forever, but when I ventured into spinning last year I realized that applying what I know about color theory to fiber blending is a departure from my previous experience.I am really glad that I was able to purchase a drum carder (I love the Brother deluxe. Great value, quality from real people) but if you have hand cards these techniques will work just fine. I use mine for samples. I dye my own fibers too, and Deb's input has helped me to be more focused about how much of my favorite colors to dye, and how to achieve saturation.Tones, tints, shades, heathers and more. This book lives on my must-have shelf. Deb also has some online classes through Interweave Press which are excellent companions to her books.I also recommend "Colorworks" by Deb Menz, for many types of fiber artists and painters.

Thus book is an excellent text in dyeing, carding, spinning the yarn you want. The author takes you through the process of choosing and then executing the yarn you need for your project. An excellent resource for all yarn makers out there. There many color photos and explanations of how to work with the fibers.

Coming from a formal art background, I really appreciate this book. Not only does it cover the basics of dyeing and carding/combing well, but it also provides lessons in color (beyond the basic color wheel) where you directly see the results of mixing and using different color combinations. There are samples of finished knitted pieces using similarly-colored yarn yet with slightly different properties. Readers are encouraged to use the exercises for future self-directed study. Great cataloguing ideas are offered.I highly recommend this book!

I have been dyeing awhile, this book is somewhat helpful but most of it I already knew

As a spinner and natural dyer I found this book informative and can see it becoming a real 'go to' when mixing colours either on the carder or during the spin

The treatment of color by light and by pigment is very descriptive. And I found the detailed descriptions of how to dye fleece using many types of dyes to be very helpful. This is a comprehensicve treatment of color and dying tecnique and is a reference book that I will use often in fiber arts.

This is an excellent book (5 stars for content), but this edition, which is described as "Third Edition, Mid-cycle revision" and dated 2012 appears to be the exact same text as the 2008 Third Edition (3 stars for unclear product description). The only difference is that this product comes with online access to the e-book version and "additional resources". The only added resource I could find was errata - and this should be available to anyone who purchased the 2008 book anyway. The publisher should make this information clear so customers can make informed buying decisions.

I am a social scientist, not an epidemiologist, and I found this book to exceptionally good. It is the most current, complete, and clear presentation of methods for causal inference for observational (i.e. non-experimental) studies that I have seen. The things that really set this book apart for me include:1. It synthesizes contributions by Pearl and Rubin on the foundations of causal inference, and contributes its own perspective via the sufficient cause model. This is truly cutting edge, not to mention impeccably coherent.2. The first third of the book is on study design, including measurement, sampling, and defining effects. This is just fantastic. Many methods textbooks jump right into approaches to analyzing data with little time taken to discuss how to make the data in the first place. This book provides a major corrective to that tendency.3. In data analysis, a lot of attention is given to sparse data problems, which again is just great. So many textbooks overlook this problem, which is a huge omission.4. The data analysis section includes discussion of up-and-coming data mining and non-parametric methods (e.g. BART, boosted regression, etc.) to characterize response surfaces in the service of causal inference. That's amazingly cutting edge for a textbook.5. The meta-analysis section emphasizes simplicity and provides a very nice list of common errors that should be avoided.6. The references are to state of the art literature not only in epidemiology, but also in econometrics, education research, and statistics. It's great to see such cross-fertilization across disciplines, and it shows how these various disciplines are converging, it seems, on common analytical tools for causal inference in observational studies.There are lots of nice examples throughout the book too. For other social scientists out there, I highly recommend this as a primer on state of the art methods for carrying out observational studies.

Might be the authority text in the field, but incredibly dense and abstract without practical examples.

If you're an epidemiologist (or studying to be one), this is definitely a resource you need to have on hand. I've found it useful in studying for my PhD qualifying exams, and also as a reference in teaching students. It is the "go-to" whenever there is a question at hand.

This is an outstanding textbook, explaining the state-of-the-art thinking in Epidemiology. I am giving it 4 stars, because the book is quite dense and you basically have to read most chapters several times to really understand what they are saying!

Needed the book for class- and it was a good deal.
