***I received this book as a giftREAD THIS BOOK IF:You live for psychological thrillersYou are looking for part diary part mysteryYou want to see how psychosis post-trauma builds from the ground upWe’ll Never Be Apart is disturbing in its detached simplicity. Love can be deadly but sisterhood is eternal.PROS:Cellie is intense. I’ve never been so terrified by a character. Her maniacal little laugh, the disquieting way she stares, her sadistic actions with animals, and her sickening jealousy all will put you on edge. She’s a loose cannon, you’re never sure about what she’ll do next and each incident is more horrific, violent, and vicious. The sociopathic way she feels no remorse about her actions builds from childhood onward through Alice’s diary entries. Seeing the sickness grow in Cellie is heartbreaking and scary for Alice and the reader. Knowing their past trauma and why she behaves the way she does will make you question her actions and exactly how guilty she truly is.The casual, almost frank recount of Cellie’s pyromaniac episodes are all the more terrifying because they’re not especially graphic. The clean way they’re worded with almost a clinical precision takes all the emotion out of the scene and replaces it with a raw, hungry desperation. In the way you can’t look away from an accident on the side of the road, Cellie and Alice’s story compels, tempted, begged for me to continue reading. Some truths were unexpected and shocking. Reevaluation of the memories create a crazed, hysteria that puts everything else into question. You’ll no longer know if Alice can be trusted, if her trauma has buried something so deep that only half-truths exist anymore.Alice is hard to read. Sometimes she’s soft, introverted and escapes through the comfort of her army of origami warriors. Other times she sarcastic, a little vulgar, and feisty. Alice’s relationship with her sister is one of scars, fierce love, and mistrust. Despite their unhealthy love for one another, there’s always a foreboding beneath the surface, one that suggests neither one is safe with the other.Chase and Alice are sweet together. Their relationship is shaky and tentative but blossoms. They find comfort and peace with each other. Their moments are cute, mischievous, and sometimes packed with tears.CONS:The twist was expected and you can guess relatively quickly but the story is so compelling that you almost forget until it rushes upon you.The ease in which patients at Savage Isle can break the rules and gain access to forbidden materials was a little too convenient and hard to believe. It took away from some of the anxiety and fear because the risk just wasn’t there.

We'll Never Be Apart is an excellent psychological thriller. It is smartly plotted, surprisingly atmospheric, and features characters that are complex and authentic. The author keeps the story moving along at a fast rate through time shifts, and expertly builds suspense as the reader gradually learns more of the story, filling in gaps and creating more questions. I found this book hard to put down, and although I guessed where things were going, it took me a while. Even when I had things pretty much figured out, I was so invested in the characters, I remained glued to the page till the bitter end.Alice is a complex narrator and an engaging young woman struggling with PTSD, memory loss, and a myriad of other problems when we first meet her in a mental health facility. There are allusions to a pending court case, an accusation of murder, and it's obvious that Alice is at the facility as an involuntary commitment. Her mysterious twin sister Cellie is also there in a different ward, and we get to know both of them through Alice's journal entries that detail a tragic past filled with violence and neglect. Add in a romantic interest in the form of a fellow patient, and you get a book filled with tension. This would have easily been a five star read for me except for some events that seemed just a bit too unlikely. Make no mistake though, this is a powerful read and Alice is truly a memorable character. Some of the author's unique choices in plotting keep the story from becoming bogged down in darkness even as it revels in an atmosphere that is almost gothic. We'll Never Be Apart is an enthusiastic recommend for ages 14 and up. I will be looking forward to this author's next work.

Alice Monroe is in a mental ward called Savage Isle. Besides being sedated every day and forced to attend group therapy, all she wants is revenge on her twin sister Cellie, for setting fire to a barn that killed Alice’s boyfriend, Jason. In the Psych ward, Alice is determined to get to the highly restricted area so she can finally kill her sister, who’s been tormenting her since they were little. When she meets the mysterious boy named Chase, he promises to help her do just that. Until one night she realizes that Cellie might just be trying to do the same thing to her.Told in chapters occurring in the present, alternating with Alice’s fascinating journal entries detailing events from their childhood- from how the girl’s spent a week in a house alone with their dead grandfather at six years old, to the grim foster situations they’d been placed in.Emiko Jean’s writing is beautifully poetic, heartbreaking, and sinister all at once. There is a very cool twist toward the end, which I did not figure out until it actually happens, and the author does a great job of keeping the reader in suspense for the entirety of the book. I also love the way the twist was handled- realistically, and with sensitivity. My favorite parts were Alice’s journal entries. You get a peek at two little girls, one very damaged and on the border of deranged, and the other just trying to hold on to some sense of normalcy as they grow into teens. I loved this book and could not put it down. This is a little creepy, a little crazy and a lot awesome. Perfect for this time of year.5 stars.Originally posted on FicWishes[...]
