Most Americans call themselves Christian, yet much confusion exists as to what “Christian” actually means. Some Christians call themselves “Reformists” or “Calvinists” but lack a comprehensive understanding of what these labels actually mean. R.C. Sproul clarifies the confusion in What is Reformed Theology? by helping the reader to answer two fundamental questions from the Reformed perspective: (1) What do you believe? and (2) Why do you believe it?Consequently, this book is an intellectually engaging and doctrinally sound introduction to the foundational doctrines of Reformed Theology and the five main points of Calvinism. As the author writes on page 163, “The primary axiom of all Reformed theology is this: ‘Salvation is of the Lord.’” What is Reformed Theology? solidifies this core idea in two parts. The first discusses the foundation of theology which is principally theocentric (God-centered). Hence, the resultant foundational stones (based on the Bible alone, committed to faith alone, devoted to Christ, and structured by three covenants) all result from this theocentric posture. The second part of the book clarifies the five main points of Calvinism or the specific doctrines unique to Reformed theology: total depravity, unconditional election, limited atonement, irresistible grace and perseverance of the saints.Throughout What is Reformed Theology?, Sproul does what he always does: provide clear, concise and Biblically sound arguments to support his claims. He engages heavily with the Westminster Confession of Faith and cites numerous renowned theologians (Calvin and Luther) to clarify central ideas. What I appreciate most about this book is that Sproul does not simply write, “This is how it is.” Rather, and particularly for claims that are more controversial (e.g. limited atonement), he raises the loudest objections from other schools of theological thought, and masterfully responds with coherent counter-arguments. In fact, Sproul’s treatment of Christ’s purposeful atonement (Chapter 8) is a theological masterpiece that makes an airtight case and defense for limited atonement, or the idea that Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross made certain the salvation of the elect only.Ultimately, one would have to search very hard to find a subpar book from R.C. Sproul (and you would end up empty handed). What is Reformed Theology? is no exception and an excellent introduction to the Reformist perspective and undoubtedly will lay the foundation from the Church Fathers who “got it right.” For Bible students, pastors, church leaders or the generally curious, this is a fantastic place to start.

Whether you're a new Christian, or have been one for decades, this short book will help you understand the particulars of the faith. Martin Luther was used by God to usher in an age of recovery of Biblical truths that had been obscured, and he was followed by other men of God.Dr. Sproul is able to take these recovered truths and explain them in a simple, but not "simplistic" manner! Work your way slowly through the text. Stop and think about what you've read. Enjoy the short Latin phases sprinkled throughout the book--they'll help you remember key concepts. The book draws heavily on the Westminster Confession (a statement of faith) to point the student to Scriptural ideas. Some language may seem a bit dated, but Sproul does a great job "deciphering" any confusing phrases, etc. Finally and most importantly, be a Berean. Look at the Word of God and let His truth penetrate your heart.

This was a great and simple book on Reformed theology. I am very familiar with the messages of RC Sproul and this book came across as clear and precise and non-argumentative as Sproul himself.Being a Reformed Christian myself I went into this book already agreeing with Sproul and my convictions remained unchanged. However a few of Sproul's arguments in the text came off confusing and unclear that I had to skip them. Of course he always rounded off his arguments with a final summary sentence that I always agreed with.I also found great help and clarity in his discussion on the Perseverance/preservation of the saints. His distinction between radical falling and total falling away was very helpful especially in my own personal walk. Finally, I recommend this book to all Christians alike. For the new Christian to be taught the basic doctrine of salvation and for the older Christian to be reminded of it. Those with opposing theology will most probably dismiss the book for its simplicity. However the simplest answer is usually the best.

The author wrote the pre trilogy to give the backstory to the favorite character of the series. But it feels as if the series was designed for the character of Drizzt. In the final book of the trilogy there is a great deal of excitement, action, and humor. And of course there is a fair amount of tragedy the author enjoys getting his George RR Martin on.

"Sojourn" is the last book in the "Dark Elf Trilogy" and it details Drizzt's journey as he leaves the Underdark and ventures forth on the surface.I thought the plot was a bit clunky in that it felt like the author crammed two major stories into one book. The first story is how Drizzt attempts to befriend some humans and all the things that go into fighting some new creatures, defending his good nature, and learning to survive on the surface. The second story commences when he leaves the initial place where he found sanctuary and attempts to find a place to call home. In a way, it felt a little like Tolkein's final story where the ring is destroyed, but the book continues back to the Shire for a little adventure there.I enjoyed this book and the subtle religious undertones. Drizzt comes to realize that Lolth, the Spider Queen, is not the only deity in the world, and that by following his heart he was following after a deeper calling. It was also comforting to follow Drizzt's journey as he sought out true companions that would accept him for who he was and not just make decisions based on his race.

Sure I was sad to see the crazy magical mining pickaxe, hammer handed dude leave, but I guess there is only so much you can write about someone with no hands. I think.Initially, Drizzt gets himself into some shenanigans by getting framed for slaughtering a bunch of kids. While it was quickly determined he was not the murderer, some jackass kept on trying to kill him because he lost his ear. He lost his ear when a tree fell on him. Shouldn't this guy go buck-wild on the tree instead? I think that would take less effort than tracking him for so long.Drizzt then takes out the real murders, who apparently need to eat people, I guess to gain XP in order to go back to its alternate universe. I related to this on a personal level.Between these events, some female ranger tries to track him down with an obviously metro-sexual dwarf and an elf I couldn't really care about. Their story ends when some rock-monsters started barraging them with boulders. Drizzt of course saved them, but then those characters became non-existant in the continuing plot. Where did they go? Who were they? Should I really care? Probably not. Then Drizzt meets up a crazy dude who is like Dr. Doolittle meets the Terminator. Except he's blind, which if you kinda think about it, makes him even cooler. The story turns into the Karate Kid for a while and Drizzt comes out being even more badass than in previous books.Other cool stuff happens. Conclusion: read it, dammit.

Just when you think you have the book figured out it will surprise you. Just when you think there is a pattern to Drizzt's misery you will be denied! This book is a self expression of belief that a virtue in itself is rewarding. There is a deep sense of right and wrong that every young reader should try and understand. I am 43 years old and am reading the book with my 2 year old sleeping next to me, yes I hope she reads the book as soon as she can. There is something sweet about this book. Something very satisfying; like I said a must read.

As usual a great story from R.A. Salvatore. The third book in the Legend of Drizzt series, it really demonstrates how much of an outcast Drizzt really is on the surface. Whereas the two previous ones, Homeland & Exile delved into drow culture and the air of mystery surrounding their city of Menzoberranzan, Sojourn shows the stark contrast between the world of the drow and that of the surface. Overall an incredible tale!

I finally gave in and read this trilogy (14 years ago now) and have re-read it a couple times since. As the prequel to the Icewind Dale trilogy, this series sets up Drizzt's entire history and lays it out for you to not just read, but adventure along with him.Beginning literally moments before his birth, this series takes you through every facet of Drizzt's life. His education by the evil Drow, his relationships with his parents, siblings and fellow dark elves, his adventures below and above the surface!R. A. Salvatore takes you on a bumpy and sometimes terrifying ride through the echoing tunnels of the Underdark, to meet new friends and new enemies.'The Dark Elf Trilogy' is the perfect start to a fantastic series of books that will keep you entertained for years, and keep you coming back for more!

It has been a long time since I've read a book in less than 3 days, but this was a true page turner for me. In fact, I have read the first 3 novels in the past 10 days or so, and I haven't grown tired yet.I liked this story better than the second in the trilogy, and maybe a bit more than the first in some ways.I highly recommend the trilogy, and if like I you feel a bit apprehensive after finishing the second, grab this novel. It not only finished the trilogy on a strong note, it reinvigorated my interest in moving onto the 4th novel.

Awesome set collection of books. A family member gave them to me when I was younger. I thought they looked nerdy and it took me a few years to give it a go, but I am very glad I did. I read through my old copies so many times they fell apart, which is why I bought this copy. It's nice to have the trilogy in one book, even if it is the size of a cinder block.

Knocking on Heaven's Door: The Path to a Better Way of Death, by Katy Butler

Review

“Knocking on Heaven’s Door is a thoroughly researched and compelling mix of personal narrative and hard-nosed reporting that captures just how flawed care at the end of life has become." (Abraham Verghese New York Times Book Review)“This is a book so honest, so insightful and so achingly beautiful that its poetic essence transcends even the anguished story that it tells. Katy Butler’s perceptive intellect has probed deeply, and seen into the many troubling aspects of our nation’s inability to deal with the reality of dying in the 21st century: emotional, spiritual, medical, financial, social, historical and even political. And yet, though such valuable insights are presented with a journalist’s clear eye, they are so skillfully woven into the narrative of her beloved parents’ deaths that every sentence seems to come from the very wellspring of the human spirit that is in her." (Dr. Sherwin B. Nuland, author of How We Die: Reflections of Life’s Final Chapter)“This is some of the most important material I have read in years, and so beautifully written. It is riveting, and even with parents long gone, I found it very hard to put down. ... I am deeply grateful for its truth, wisdom, and gorgeous stories—some heartbreaking, some life-giving, some both at the same time. Butler is an amazing and generous writer. This book will change you, and, I hope, our society." (Anne Lamott author of Help, Thanks, Wow)"Shimmer[s] with grace, lucid intelligence, and solace." (Lindsey Crittenden Spirituality and Health Magazine)"[An] unflinching look at America's tendency to overtreat [that] makes a strong case for the 'slow medicine' movement, which recognizes that 'dying can be postponed, but aging cannot be cured.'" (Zaineb Mohammed Mother Jones)"[A] deeply felt book...[Butler] is both thoughtful and passionate about the hard questions she raises — questions that most of us will at some point have to consider. Given our rapidly aging population, the timing of this tough and important book could not be better." (Laurie Hertzel Minneapolis Star Tribune)"Butler argues persuasively for a major cultural shift in how we understand death and dying, medicine and healing. At the same time, she lays her heart bare, making this much more than ideological diatribe. Readers…should be sure to pick up this book. It is one we will be talking about for years to come.” (Kelly Blewett BookPage)“ A pitch-perfect call for health care changes in the mechanized deaths many suffer in America.” (Roberta E. Winter New York Journal of Books)"This braid of a book...examines the battle between death and the imperatives of modern medicine. Impeccably reported, Knocking on Heaven's Door grapples with how we need to protect our loved ones and ourselves." (More Magazine)"A forthright memoir on illness and investigation of how to improve end-of-life scenarios. With candidness and reverence, Butler examines one of the most challenging questions a child may face: how to let a parent die with dignity and integrity. Honest and compassionate..." Once in a while a book comes along that makes a significant impression on our way of life. Katy Butler has written such a book, based on and expanded from her original 2010 article (What Broke My Father's Heart) in the New York Times. In "Knocking at Heaven's Door", Ms. Butler exposes the often tragic end-of-life circumstances, caused by society's unrealistic expectations and/or religious beliefs as to the sanctity of life; prolong it at any cost (usually to the patient's & family's)! This is supported, and frequently encouraged, by the medical establishment out of incompetence, greed or fear of litigation. Other reviewers have given a good synopsis of the book from laymen's point of view; I shall add a perspective from someone who has been in the trenches. The inexorable advance in medical skills, nutrition, antibiotics, chemotherapeutics and overall technology has resulted in a significant boost to the overall health of society and its longevity; at the beginning of the 20th century life expectancy, on average, was 45 years compared to 78 years today. But a longer life is not necessarily a quality life. And that is where we fail as a society. We have become very adept at prolonging life no matter what, but what we are often really doing is protracting death. Over twenty percent of deaths in the USA happen in the critical/intensive care units "where 10 days of futile flailing can cost as much as $323,000", or to put it differently about 80% of medical expenses occur in the last 2 years of life in patients with debilitating chronic intractable conditions or incurable diseases. The USA is one of the few 'first world' countries where this extravagant waste continues to happen. Other countries, just as medically advanced as the USA, limit the use of expensive technologies to cases where there is a reasonable expectation of cure, many withold sophisticated procedures from the elderly suffering from chronic ailments, and a few have legislated physician-assisted suicides and euthanasia. In my four decades career in Academic and private practice I have often dealt with end-of-life issues in my work as Director of a large Critical/Intensive Care unit (ICU) in a teaching institution and, later on, as a cancer surgeon. Until the advent and popularity of Hospice care, the only alternative to incurable, terminally ill patients was to die at the hospital or at home; the latter option was sometimes not feasible because of inadequate, unwilling or absent family support. Admission to the ICU was limited by a protocol of strict criteria. Non-salvageable patients were not admitted to ICU and remained on the general wards (for their supportive care). However, in the past two decades there has been a proliferation of ICU at most hospitals, separate units for neonates, children and even teen/adolescents; Adult Cardiac, general medical, burn, dialysis, trauma and surgical units, and "step-down" units. More sophisticated life-support equipment and testing technologies continue to become widely available. Beds have to be filled and criteria for admission to ICU are liberalized. Patients are admitted to hospital and/or ICU only by an order from a physician. Most physicians will heed the patient's and family's wishes as to the end-of-life management. Problems occur when the patient leaves no instructions or there is a discord within the family, when the patient is incapacitated. The physician has to make the decision and discuss the prognosis with the family. The ethical physician will educate the patient and family as to what is best for the patient and many doctors do just that. But unfortunately, some use any and every means to prolong the patient's vegetative existence prompted by ego (can't lose a patient), greed (gets paid for daily visits and procedures), sheer incompetence or fear of litigation (from discontented family). This often occurs even when the patient leaves specific instructions to limit extraordinary measures etc.The reimbursement method in the health care industry is flawed and encourages the provision of excessive, often unnecessary medical care. Physicians and hospitals are payed to do procedures and perform tests. Every new technique or machine creates its own indications for use (market); to "someone with a new hammer everything needs to be pounded."The answer lies in a "challenge-proof" health care will with specific end-of-life management instructions, which cannot be disputed or changed by anyone other than the patient; This should be based on an honest conversation with the primary physician, all care givers and family. Also, at any stage of a terminal condition, if an invasive test or procedure is proposed, it is best always to obtain a second opinion (or a even third) from a specialist in that particular field. The primary physician should act as advocate and gatekeeper for the terminal patient, allowing only tests and/or procedures that would truly enhance the patient's well-being and comfort. He should stand up to consultants, hospital personel and even family members, if their conduct is not beneficial to his patient.Unfortunately, few are willing to do that for fear of antagonizing their fellow physicians, with resulting loss of referrals and income.Ultimately, in this country, we need to have a universally agreed-upon, comprehensive set of criteria to dispense end-of-life medical care; not based on financial benchmarks but on reasonable medical standards and targets. (I hear howls about "Rationing" and "Death Panels").Everyone dies eventually. But, to die in a vegetative state to placate others, while kept alive by machines and artificial (often painful) means, bathed in one's own body fluids and excrement, is an ignominious death. This terrific book should be required reading for all physicians and be included in the curriculum of all medical and nursing schools. It is a "must read" for all families with ailing or aging members. The interested reader would find pertinent information on hospice care and end-of-life, in works by Dennis McCullough, MD about `Slow Medicine', Ira Byock, MD `The Best Care Possible', Sherwin Nuland, MD `How We Die' and Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, MD `On Death and Dying'.

Spoiler alert: Medicare is imperfect and so is your physician. Those are just two of the takeaways from Katy Butler's "Knocking on Heaven's Door: The Path to a Better Way of Death." Butler whipstitches together a personal story of family, life and loss, with a troubling but informative assessment of current medical practices and American cultural norms that surround end-of-life issues.I first encountered Butler's writing on the subject in a New York Times article in 2010 called "What Broke My Father's Heart." She laid out the multitude of personal and medical issues as her parents entered their 80s - a sudden health crisis of her father's that ultimately laid the groundwork for his years-long decline - stroke, heart disease, dementia, blood clots, brain hemorrhage. She explained how our current system more often than not intentionally draws out the process of dying. Medication, surgical interventions, technology - all of these things led to the shell of the man she knew as her father, simultaneously saving and dooming him. She also lovingly describes the impact his years-long dying had on her mother, who became a round-the-clock caregiver, bather, cook, cleaner and diaper changer. What stood out most to me, what I took away from that article, is explained more fully in "Knocking on Heaven's Door." That for many, many of us, being forced to make a split second decision in a medical emergency will likely lead to a much longer path of disease, decline, and pain. Your mother has a heart attack? "If you don't agree to a breathing tube/feeding tube/CPR/pacemaker RIGHT NOW, she will die, and it will be because you LET her." Few of us are capable of knowing all what should be known to make truly informed decisions about and for our loved ones - we just know we don't want to let her die in front of us, before the rest of the family can be told there's a decision to make, much less have the chance to say goodbye. And so I found myself nodding in recognition and understanding of what being part of this sorority of caregivers means. My family was in a similar spot. My mother had entered a hospital in May of 2008 to begin dialysis treatment for kidney disease, which had been treated to that point with medication. She did not return to her home until May of 2009. An endless list of crises emerged: A slip and fall in the hospital, compound fracture, infection, sepsis, endocarditis, MRSA, multiple temporary dialysis ports, cardiac arrest, three temporary pacemakers, one permanent pacemaker, atrophy, neglect, gangrene, amputation, three hospitals, and three skilled nursing facilities. Through the "wonders" of modern medicine, amazing strength on her part and dogged determination on our part, she finally returned home to her husband of nearly 50 years. Meanwhile, I racked up over $20,000 in airfare and expenses, flying back and forth between Hartford, Connecticut and Ft. Myers, Florida to handle the crises as they came. It was like a long distance game of Whack-a-Mole - you smack one down with a mallet, and another pops up over there. I used up all paid time off, and exhausted FMLA benefits. Ultimately, I put them on a plane to their native Michigan, sold their house in Florida, and joined them several months later, leaving a career and friends behind me on the east coast. The thing about books like this, at least for an average layperson like me, is that I didn't even know they existed. I knew next to nothing about any of my mother's health issues, and even less about Medicare and its rules. Or how to navigate the system. Or how to advocate for a family member. Or the importance of a medical quarterback. I didn't know I needed that kind of information, certainly not in advance of the "iceberg, right ahead!"But the initial article opened my eyes (mostly in horror) at what might further face us in the future. And why I was so glad to learn that the author was expanding on the article and working on a book. Butler's style of storytelling feels natural and warm. Her research into the professional health care field and the personal and societal costs are well-presented, and her conclusions are reasoned and imparted with empathy.I hope those who need this book find it before they tumble into the rabbit hole of end-of-life care. Her article in 2010 allowed our family to talk about the pitfalls that may face us in the future, and how we would want to proceed if x, y or z happened with either parent. Her article came two years before my mother's death, and it brought both comfort and clarity when we had difficult decisions to make. If you're a daughter (or son), or you're a mother (or father), use this as an opportunity to open a conversation with your loved ones. It's just one more way to care for each other.

While I give it 5 stars the words hover "I LOVE IT" aren't exactly my sentiments. "I AM SMARTER NOW" would be more appropriate. I have worked in healthcare (cardiac intensive care) and IT (software) for several years. I think Ms Butler did an good job in research and balanced with her experiences as a daughter. My dad didn't have a pacemaker, but phsyciians quickly suggested another Medtronic stimulator for $90K which we only paid $250 for. I wish I read this book before that. Too often in our "fee for service" we are not leading with therapy, bio-feedback, counseling, activity, etc. In all my years cardiac nursing, I never considered what the long term effects of pacemakers. We fix problems acutely, but what are we setting up for the families long term? Never heard that as part of a cardiologists discussion with informed consent. As a history buff, I enjoyed the history of electro-therapy too. That was a bonus for me.

I bought this for my twin granddaughters for their first birthday. The colors are very bright and they love the book!

I liked this book , my sons reading lvl was above the lvl of this book , still helpful , my son enjoyed none the less

Good book for my daughter to read on her own. She really likes the pictures and words in this book.

I'm not sure my baby daughter will enjoy the image of birds behind bars. Why this particular picture made its way into an image book for very small children is beyond me.

Tower of Babel, by Bodie Hodge

About the Author

Bodie attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (SIUC) and received a BS and MS (in 1996 and 1998 respectively) in mechanical engineering. His specialty was a subset of mechanical engineering based in advanced materials processing, particularly starting powders. He conducted research for his master’s degree through a grant from Lockheed Martin and developed a New Method of Production of Submicron Titanium Diboride. The new process was able to make titanium diboride cheaper, faster and with higher quality. This technology is essential for some nanotechnologies. During his years at SIUC (a secular college), he continued his personal study of biblical apologetics, and even began teaching this topic to a junior high church class. While at SIUC, he was the president of one of the few Christian RSOs (Registered Student Organizations) called Christians Unlimited, and was also an officer in the student chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. After earning his master’s degree, he accepted a position of Visiting Instructor at SIUC and started in the fall semester of 1998. He was only 24 years old when he began teaching undergraduate engineering courses at the university. After working for SIUC for a couple of years, Bodie accepted a position as a test engineer through Aerotek Engineering to work for Caterpillar Inc. in Peoria, Illinois at the Peoria Proving Ground. While working at Caterpillar, he taught apologetics to junior high and high school students at his local church, which was a natural outcome considering his love for science, history, and theology. He did this until taking a position with Answers in Genesis in 2003. Currently, Bodie is a speaker, writer, and researcher on a host of topics, including fall of Satan and related events. Bodie was saved when he was nine. As a youngster, he was active in baseball, football and basketball. His hobbies also included hunting and fishing, which are almost unavoidable pursuits while growing up on a farm in Western Illinois.

The Biblical passage relating to the Tower of Babel is a subject with surprisingly few words yet the passage unleashes a morass of unanswered questions for a thoughtful student. I was pleased with the high level overview presented in this study as it touched on every significant question I had. I found the book very readable, the logic easy to follow, and was astonished several times by the insights. After reading and using the book as preparation, I taught this subject to a senior class containing knowledgeable and scholarly Christians. There was a lot of checking of math done on the ages of the patriarchs and cross referencing verses, yet everyone came away with significant new insights on a subject they have read and studied repeatedly over a lifetime. We have a deeper appreciation for, and excitement about, Genesis Chapter 11, largely due to the good writing in "Tower of Babel."

Excellent book! Well written, thought out, with lots of research. Helps to connect many dots about how the world's cultures developed. Also, helps to explain the color variations of mankind and the physical ethnic features of us all. Additionally, I now understand, more than ever before, what "God's chosen people" means when talking about the Hebrew/Jewish nation.

Bodie Hodge brings in the cultural aspects of history often overlooked by those who do not think outside of their own culture and period of history. He makes a good case for the Tower of Babel being square, not round, like many other such ancient structures throughout the world still surviving from ancient times. It contains a lot of exposition on the words used in the Bible and the context of the times. The author makes sense of those times and what is meant. He brings in the legends that have survived by oral tradition throughout the world that show amazing similarities with the biblical accounts. He shows by mapping the movement of people groups (tribes and nations) through the various territories how the descendants of Noah spread throughout the earth. He also debunks the so-called contradictions found in the Bible and explores other mysteries like when the book of Job was written. All in all it is fascinating reading.

This is a fun book on several levels. The chapters are fairly short, but they are full of fun stuff. Many of which you would not expect. Racism, evolution, continental shift, how to read Chinese calligraphy, language shifts, etc. It is almost like reading an encyclopedia. Yet never dry as dust scholarly. The author does shoot down quite a few speculations. But is not afraid to admit when she doesn't have a settled answer in places. I really dug this one.

The research is very well done, relying for the most part on Scripture (as it should). However, it is quite laborious to follow and one may find his/her interest and attention span waning. In the final analysis, one can only marvel at the care Moses took under the guidance of the Holy Spirit to record the generations of individuals and peoples that comprise the Word of God. For those anticipating doing research on the topics surrounding this infamous structure, they would be well advised to begin here. You've done yourself proud by undertaking such an ambitious project.,Mr. Hodge.

This was interesting to me, a lot of interesting information about the original peoples of the Bible. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in the Biblical accounts of the history of man on earth and origins of nations in history.

There is a lot of information here about directional spreading of Noah's descendants but everything is general. I was hoping for more detailed information on what names Noah's family had in the languages of the other city-states and empires. Perhaps there is no way of knowing available to us yet.

Possibly the best book on the Tower of Babel. As a history teacher, I've read many papers, books, and articles regarding the histories of the ancient civilzations. This is by far at the top of my list. Not only is it very well researched, it is incredibly insightful to many ideas some may have never thought of. This book comes with my highest recommendation..

To be honest, I was a little disappointed with this book, but I think it was because my expectations weren't correct and not because the book is bad. I believe there's just far, far too many kinds of insects, arachnids, and other critters to have one tell-all field guide describe them all. I was expecting something like the guide I have for plants, where if I see it along the trail, there's a 98% chance I can ID it. With this book, it seems I can only ID certain critters. The vast majority of the insects in the book I've never seen before. The book itself is beautifully well done, and it does have a lot of species included for the size (about 3 per page, almost all with a photo). Including ranges would have been be a nice touch. Looking through, I also realized that the huge difference between larval and adult stages, and also between male and female, puts a guide like this at a disadvantage as well since there's so much variation within a single species. Most photos are of adults, but some are of larvae (and may not include an adult photo). There's some oddities I noticed. There is exactly, precisely one ant species in this book. Weird--no carpenter ants, sugar ants, etc. I've only seen two of the 7-8 species of spider the book covers, and the ubiquitous daddy long legs, wolf spiders, and brown recluses aren't in there. But there's tons of varieties of ladybugs and butterflies/moths. And even of those, I don't think it covers some of the common moths I see here in Seattle.I would return this if it didn't cost $6 to ship it back. It's a well-done book, but I've learned there's far too much variety for one book to effectively ID all the critters we find up here.

I moved to the PNW recently and bought this book to specifically identify insects that affect me. There are these small biting flies I have never encountered before, there are small ground hornets that I have never encountered before, there are also mosquitos that I would like to identify, there are large hornets that I encounter that I would like to identify and some paper wasps that I would like to identify. The top 6 insects affecting me here are not covered in the book. For my purposes this book is almost useless. I may encounter a butterfly some day that may be in the book.

I found this book very useful for teaching myself some of the taxonomy and species of the PNW. It would be nicer if it included more species from each family, however I'd still recommend it to anyone who's new to entomology and wants to focus in the PNW.

I purchased this book as a reference text. I am a Master Gardener and people bring in all sorts of insect critters for ID. Full color photos and lots of pertinent info will make the task a lot easier. I recommend it if you want to learn more about our insect friends and want to improve your PNW garden habitat to increase beneficials and pollinators.

Woefully incomplete. More a compendium of insects photographed by the author than a true field guide.

This product arrived right away and in perfect shape, the boys love this book. Keeping it with them on all our hikes and when camping. great catalog of every creepy crawler around. I love looking up new ones we find. A MUST HAVE for anyone going outside...

Like this book. It is great.

As the Chairman of a Vector Control District I found this book to be extremely worth the money and useful guide to helping identify insects for District residents.

I remember reading about Shyima Hall in the news: a girl kept as a family slave, literally right under everyone’s nose. It’s one thing to hear about such things happening. It’s quite another to have it so close to home. (She was in Irvine in Orange County. I was living in Tustin, an adjacent city, during the time.) Some years later, when I heard about her memoir, Hidden Girl: The True Story of a Modern-Day Child Slave (Simon & Schuster, 2014), I was eager to have a chance to read her side of the story. The book begins with Shyima’s younger years in Egypt, her family plagued with financial difficulties. While the author doesn’t excuse her parents handing her over to work for another family, the book does show the reader why they probably felt they had no other choice. Kept as a slave, eight-year-old Shyima tolerated substandard living arrangements, received no education, and had no time for herself. It was work day and night. She kept track of time passed by the birthdays of her owners’ children. When her owners decided to move to the United States, they went to a lot of trouble to make sure Shyima joined them. Shyima’s life of slavery continued over here, until someone dropped an anonymous tip about the suspicious girl to the police. Now free, Shyima’s struggles didn’t end. She faced court trials, foster family drama, and the struggle of trying to find her place in a very different culture. But in the end, you can see that she’s happy and optimistic about life and eager to educate the American public about the modern-day slave trafficking problem.Hidden Girl is a great book, taking its reader through a whole range of emotions. Cowriter Lisa Wysocky did an excellent job keeping a very foreign and little girlish voice to the narrative. And it was encouraging for me to learn that the Orangewood Children’s Home (with which my old church had been involved) played a positive role in helping her. The book is good evidence that – even though there’s a lot of social and economic issues abroad – there are real problems here at home that need our attention too.

This is an interesting story of an Egyptian girl, Shyima, who was sold into slavery by her own parents! This is not uncommon for very poor large families. The family who owned her called her 'stupid girl' which stripped her of her identity. Finally they took her illegally to America and she continued to work as their slave. Eventually she became free, hardly realizing what that meant. Shyima became an American citizen and started a new free life, having to start her education late. She did a lot of work to speak out against slavery of this type. This is a good book, although not the best in writing style, but it gets the emotions and sad facts across. I have read a few books about domestic slaves and this one has a happier ending.

This was one of my favorite reads of 2014. I had caught wind of Shyima's story in the news, so when I found that she had written a book detailing her experience, I was compelled to buy it. It is written so simply, from a child's point of view. Also, as English is not the author's native language you can tell that she has chosen her words very carefully. It is a tale of a very sad experience, and you can't help but cheer on the author as she works to overcome her situation and see her abusers punished. She is a survivor, and you will find yourself willing her to keep on. An excellent book!

This but is thought provoking and at times hard to read. But we'll worth reading, just keep some tissues close by. It gives a lot of good information as well.I am so proud of you Shyima, you are an inspiration to me. I was sexually abused as a child by my dad, but the abuse you suffered is so far beyond comprehension I can't even tell you.The fact that you have made the choice to become a strong, happy, productive woman and mother is more than anyone could expect for you to do ,but I personally am so happy those are the choices you did make. Like you said, you could have turned inside yourself and lived the life of a victim, but you didn't and I am so, so proud do you for that decision. Also, thank you for writing this book.

This book is a most read book. The book is about a little girl who is sold into slavery by his parents. But unlike any other girl she decided to overcome all her trauma of her pass life and live the life that all humans deserve. A life of happiness. I cannnot believe that there is still people who would want a slave. This people are horrible. I wish that the Mom and the Dad pay for all the pain and unadjusted they cause to this little girl. I wish there were higher sentences for this type of people. The only thing I didn't like about the book was at the end she keep talking about the same thing of how she wanted to become a police officer to help end slavery. I feel that there could have been a better ending. But the book is interesting.

I could not put the book down until almost the end. Her story of being a slave engrossed me completely. I also found interesting her struggles to acculturate and obtain learning. Shyima's will to improve her lot in life shows just what determined and strong people can accomplish. However, most fascinating was her depiction of her time in slavery. It's amazing to learn of how slavery still exists even in the U.S. Her plea at the end of how all of us can be more observant to help stamp out the practice really opened my eyes.

This was an amazing book that is a true eye opener. Is sad to think that human trafficking and slavery not only go on in the world, but go on right here is the US. As a mother I can't even begin to process handing over my child to strangers to become a slave. There is NO HONOR in selling your child! Shyima went through something so horrific. No one should ever have to go through this kind of torture. She is an incredibly strong person. She over came so many obstacles . She is truly an amazing person. Thank you for not only sharing your story, but enlightening the readers on the signs of a person possibly being held against their will.
