Will the church experience the tribulation? While disagreement about the end times may seem trivial, the times themselves are anything but that. God’s revelation is to be taken seriously, even the more puzzling parts. Evidence for the Rapture sorts through what has stumped many for centuries: Scripture’s teaching on the rapture. In this collection of exegetical essays, professors from leading Bible schools give a biblical and convincing case for a pretribulation rapture. In sound interpretive technique, they incorporate the relevant Scriptures from a number of biblical angles, including:The words of Jesus in the GospelsPaul’s teachings in the epistlesProphetic literatureApocalyptic literatureThe redemptive history of IsraelA strong contender in the ongoing end times debate, the doctrine of a pretribulation rapture has remained a fixture in many churches and institutions over the last few hundred years. Evidence for the Rapture is a fresh polish on this long-standing doctrine.

Evidence for the Rapture: A Biblical Case for Pretribulationism is an excellent recent, work that goes beyond the promise of the title to argue for the necessity of a pretribulational Rapture of the church. If your not familiar with this end-times position, it is the view that the deceased who came to faith in Christ through the Church, and living believers will be caught up out of the world to meet the Lord in the air and be taken to heaven where they will be kept safe during the seven years of tribulation that will come upon the earth.Whether you agree with this position or not this is a work that ought to be in your library. It will equip pre-tribulationists with cogent arguments defending their view. Opponents will need to understand and respond to the arguments made by the ten contributing authorsEvidence for the Rapture provides a reasoned, rational alternative to popular end-times works that sometimes resort to date setting. It also provides an exegetically derived framework that allows the student of prophecy to integrate all that the Bible has to say with regard to Jesus’ return. The book is aimed at a thoughtful, Biblically literate, and curious audience. Each essay carefully interacts with the text of the Bible. Whenever an argument is made from the original languages of scripture it is thoroughly explained. Sources are well footnoted so that those who want to know more about supporting and opposing arguments can consult the works referenced. Each of the essays provides an exegetically based defense of the pre-tribulation Rapture from different perspectives. Contributors are from Dallas Theological Seminary, Grace Theological Seminary, The Master’s Theological Seminary Moody Bible Institute, and Shasta Bible College and Graduate School.I enjoyed the book so much that it is hard for me to identify individual highpoints. Nevertheless, I am going to make a try. The opening essay by Dr. Robert Thomas addressing imminency is a fantastic survey that roots the doctrine firmly in the teaching of Jesus and then shows how His teaching echoes through the subsequent New Testament books.Similarly, the editor Dr. John Hart, demonstrates that the New Testament teaching about the Rapture of the Church is rooted in the Olivet Discourse of Matthew 24.Lastly, Dr. George Gunn ably defends the eschatological promise of Jesus to take His Children to a heavenly home in John 14:1—3 against recent attempts to argue for a non-eschatological interpretation. This is an important and much needed work in the area of Biblical eschatology. In the best tradition of dispensational hermeneutics each author grounds their argumentation in text of scripture. Without reservation I recommend this to those who both oppose and support this eschatological stance. This is a book to be with.

Loved this excellent collection of essays by several contemporary theologians writing on the Rapture...more specifically, how Scripture points to a pre-Tribulation Rapture..

Excellent well written case for the rapture - pre-tribulation....

An excellent work establishing the pre tribulation view began with the early church. So many have wrongfully stated the pre tribulation view is only a relatively recent origin. Also, it effectively shows the Scriptural conflicts holding to the other views. The rapture is imminent.

Fantastic book!

Excellent discussion of relevant proof-texts

some of the material on matt. 24 was either redundant or unclear regarding the pre-trib. rapture

John Hart is the editor for 9 people, each having a chapter. The chapters are very thorough with a lot of analysis of Bible verse words and phrases., which gets tedious to read. It's designed forbiblical scholars. The book has far too detail much for the average person. The print is small.A side thought is when Jesus said no one knows the day or hour of the Rapture except the Father in Heaven, why bother to try to figure outwhen the Rapture will occur? Just stay obedient to God until it happens. I think a possible motive for believing in a Pre-Tribulation Rapture isto escape the pain of the Great Tribulation. It's best to be ready to go through the Tribulation if the Rapture happens during or after theTribulation.

Conceptions of God in Ancient Egypt: The One and the Many, by Erik Hornung

Review

"After surveying the approaches to Egyptian religion from antiquity through twentieth-century scholarship, Hornung... considers aspects of divinity, the iconography and characteristics of the gods, and the relationship between gods and believers.... A masterly, scrupulously documented work that combines close attention to textual and artifactual evidence with penetrating theological insights." (Library Journal)"An excellent historical overview of the gods... It is a recommended necessary reading for those studing Ancient Egyptian religion." (Frankie's Reviews in Egyptology)"Hornung asks usually neglected questions concerning what the Egyptians themselves thought about their gods, thus meeting these people on their own terms. Along the way he carefully examines evidence that has been marshaled in favor of monotheism or monotheistic tendencies within what appears to be a vast Egyptian pantheon. Adding to the pleasure and usefulness of this work is the fine translation by John Baines.... Containing a full index, a glossary of gods, and appropriate illustrations, this is a significant volume." (Choice)"It is not often that an introduction to the thorny topic of ancient Egyptian religion can be recommended unreservedly.... Over the past thirty-five years the acceptable introductions to Egyptian religion can be counted on the fingers of one hand, and all are from the pens of scholars trained in a Germanic tradition! The present work by Erik Hornung maintains this excellent, though rare, standard." (American Historical Review)

If you want a thorough exposition on all of the issues you will need to consider when thinking about Egptian Gods, or God in general, this is an excellent work. Honing is admirable in discussing and critiquing many perspectives, and the last sections of summary are worth it alone. However I sense at times he is a bit sneaky in how he presents evidence so as to favor his views. For example, he excludes pantheism, and never links ntr and nature, both of which are strongly implied by the characteristics of the Egyptin Gods and Goddesses. Nonetheless the points he does make are strong and refreshingly critical- it is clear he has thought more extensively than average.

Hornung gives a thorough review of the vast and disparate literature interpreting the ancient Egyptian religion as polytheistic or henotheistic, monotheistic or syncretic, or some combination or evolution of those labels. He meticulously examines the primary sources for evidence supporting one or another theory. For anyone trying to understand the curious and often bizarre representations of the gods in ancient Egypt and their seemingly endless reconfiguration and re-presentation, Hornung offers a solid foundation for intelligent observation and reflection.

This work dealing with the nature of Egyptian religion is a watershed book in its field, which is ironically one of the reasons why I avoided reading it for so long. I had encountered so many other writings--both scholarly and not--that refer to Professor Hornung's book that I had gotten something of a preconception about what he actually said. That, and I had already read his work on Egyptian Books of the Afterlife and found it to be a bit dry. Now, however, I can say that Afterlife is simply not as compellingly written, or controversial, as Conceptions of God. I'm going to split this review into two parts: the academic merits of the book, and then how it relates to Kemeticism. Academically, this book is sound. Hornung starts by taking you through the history of Egyptology as a discipline and examining the biases with which scholars have tackled the subject of ancient religion. He then breaks down by parts what the aspects of deities were for the ancient Egyptians, and what they observed about deities in their own literature. He ends by offering some modern interpretations based on the factual evidence submitted. He always refers to archaeological record and frequently refers to publications by other scholars (most of whom are German, since Hornung himself is a German scholar; I used a German-English dictionary to decipher the titles of some of the works he cited). This might be a little daunting for the average reader, though. Don't read this book half-asleep or distracted, it's a university-level scholarly work and should be treated as such. If you're paying attention, though, he crafts some very excellent arguments and offers new ways of looking at archaeological record. I can see where his work has influenced other Egyptologists such as Dr. Rosalie David (who wrote Religion and Magic in Ancient Egypt) and Dr. Gay Robins (Art of Ancient Egypt). I can also see where his work might be sometimes at odds with other scholars such as James Allen and Jan Assman. But, Hornung is above all a fair scholar. He does cite from dissenting authors where they have a point of agreeance. My only cricitism is that he seems to 'drift' just a little in his last chapter, having two 'Excursus' sections--'excursus' being an academic way of saying "digression". He manages to bring the point back around, though it takes longer in the one about "The Problem of Logic". I felt that his point could have been made more concisely, but that might have been difficult given his writing style. When you work in doctoral-level academia for any real length of time, brevity seems to grow scarce. Now to the issue of this book's influence on Kemeticism. This book is on the Kemetic Orthodoxy's 'recommended reading' list, and I can easily rattle off certain concepts from the book that are directly copied by them: for example, their statement that the number four is a 'Kemetic number of completion' makes an assertion out of Hornung's observation that the "number four does occur elsewhere in the Egyptian pantheon as a classificatory schema, evidently as a symbol of completeness or totality" (pp.220-221). The chapter on "Egyptian Terms for God" includes on pp. 45-46 a list of personal names from the Old Kingdom that incorporate the word ntr or a deity's name; I easily recognized four names right off the bat which are also the 'ordained' or 'divined' names of Kemetic Orthodox members. A search through their boards would probably yield several more from this same list. Less directly 'borrowed' but still highly evident are the Orthodoxy's use of references by Hornung in their own concepts of a divinely-ordained 'nisut' and the channelling of deities. Hornung cites twice in his book an instance recorded in Hatshepsut's temple at Deir el-Bahari of "a solemn and exalted moment when her divine-ness is manifest to the whole world, when her vow to the King of the Gods, Amun...is about to be fulfilled" (p.64), in which she "enters the role of a god" (p.134). The problem is that Hornung does not discuss the nature of Egyptian kings' divinity in depth due to space constraints, neither does he have the room to detail the possibility of divinity manifesting or "channeling" into an individual. The Kemetic Orthodoxy's assertions about these two topics are purely weak, unsupported extrapolations, as far as their citations of this book are concerned. Their biggest problem, however, is that Hornung has completely negated one of their key concepts in the first two chapters of his book! The Kemetic Orthodoxy presents Egyptian religion as a 'monolatry', which is a term that was originated by German scholars and has been used in conjunction with Egyptology. Hornung discusses this in Chapter Seven of his book, "Classification and Articulation of the Pantheon". But the Orthodoxy's application of monolatry is fundamentally flawed; as Hornung explains in Chapters One and Two, early Egyptologists who were determined to prove that the ancient religion was actually a monotheism falsely interpreted the word ntr to mean not just any god, but The One God. Careful study of the language, which includes the examples of personal names mentioned above, proves that this interpretation of ntr is inaccurate. Furthermore, Hornung cites earlier scholars who also interpreted the Egyptian pantheon as simply various forms of an original godhead; compare his citation of Eberhard Otto, who said that Late-Period Egyptians "'experienced the multiple manifestations of deities as possible realizations of an anonymous divine power that lay behind them'" (p.29), with this statement from the House of Netjer FAQ: "a practitioner...when working with one particular Name of Netjer understands that Name to be one reflection of Netjer's abstract totality, sometimes referred to as the Self-Created One." Now read what Erik Hornung himself writes about such assertions: "This is a grandiose, western-style perspective--but it has little in common with Egyptian ways of looking and thinking...It is fascinating to arrange the Egyptian pantheon in three dimensions and to make the One the vanishing point--but does there not lie behind such an exercise the old apologist's endeavor to render the Egyptian gods more credible to us?" My advice to anyone interested in practicing Kemeticism is that yes, by all means, you should read this book. But read the book carefully, in its entirety, and set aside any preconceived ideas about the topic that you either held yourself, or had been given by others. I had to set aside my own reservations and biases because I knew this book was too important to avoid reading any longer; and once I had, honestly analyzing everything Hornung says in it, my understanding of the Egyptian gods and their worship was richer for having done so.

Hornung is a genius author about ancient Egyptian spirituality and religion. Offering his expert insight backed up by mountains of well indexed and cited data, this is a necessary guide for those who have gone beyond the superficial new age musings based on Budge and want to really get into the religious and spiritual heads of the ancient Egyptian

Great writing. I learned things I didn't know about syncretism of the Egyptian gods. The section on Akhenaten was well worth the price of the book.

The original German edition was one of the seminal books in the study of Egyptian religion. Hornung examined how the Egyptian gods were depicted, what they were named, their ties to particular places, how they were born and died, how they were combined with each other, and how their characteristics contrasted with Akhenaten's sole god, the Aten. Building on Henri Frankfort's views of the "multiplicity of approaches" in Egyptian religious belief, Hornung said that the surreal complexity of Egyptian theology makes sense as an illustration of a subject humans cannot fully grasp. Along the way he made the final break with the school of thought that dominated studies of Egyptian religion in the mid-20th century, where contradictory beliefs were treated as the product of political conflicts. He also pointed out that many scholars' desire to find monotheism in Egyptian religion was based on their unspoken assumption that monotheism is superior. Scholars have disagreed with some of Hornung's assertions (most notably Jan Assmann, who reopened the monotheism debate in The Search for God in Ancient Egypt), but to a large extent they all build on his work. It's not exactly easy reading, but the style is fairly straightforward, and I actually find the concluding chapter rather stirring.

My wonderful two dogs gave me this book for my birthday, and each night before bed, my husband and I read a couple chapters to give us something special to put in our minds before we fell asleep. We were disappointed when the book was over!I cannot praise this book enough! The stories are sweet without being sappy, fun without being contrived. But what really makes this book special are the amazing photographs of the animal friends together. They are sharp, beautiful, and so appealing that I can stare at them for a very long time.I also appreciate that the stories are generally about animals who became friends by their own choice rather than being made to become friends by humans who forced them to mix. Even when introduced by humans, usually because they were rescued as babies and needed another young friend to learn to socialize, they continued to choose to remain friends when offered the chance to move on in life. All the stories are amazing, so it's hard to select ones to highlight here, but I'll describe four of my favorites. I love the story of the African tortoise who decided that the perfect place for himself was at the bottom of the pile of ten great Dane puppies and who even ran with them (amazingly even outpacing some!), played with them, and ate the puppy mush with them! There are also two particularly wonderful stories of animals who saved the life of others of another breed. A litter of kittens were at risk of dying because they wouldn't take a bottle after being bereft of their mother. So the female dog of the house noticed them and picked them up one by one by the nape of the neck in the same way she had done with her own puppies a year and a half earlier, carrying them to her own dog bed. And even though she hadn't had puppies in so long, her maternal instincts and the kittens' need inspired her to lactate, producing milk to feed the babies! How special! The other story that I found so inspiring was the love between a donkey and a sheep. After they had been close for a while, a pit bull attacked the sheep, whom the owner saw dragging the dog as it hung onto the sheep's neck. She tried with no success to beat the dog with a pipe when she heard a scream of rage, and the donkey ran into the fray with no hesitation about its own safety and attacked the pit bull. The three animals struggled for quite some time, but the donkey ultimately saved the life of its sheep friend and remained by the side of the sheep as it spent a year recuperating, the most loyal of friends. This story was so special that it brought tears to my eyes! And to conclude with a whole lot of fun, if for nothing else, you ought to read this book just to learn about the swan who fell deeply in love with a plastic swan boat! They even put the two together in the zoo to weather the winter together, but when they tried to introduce the swan (with its boat of course!) to other swans, yet another swan was smitten by the boat! This book was so great that I have now ordered the author's first book, and I also bought a copy of this book to send to my favorite animal-loving family for them to enjoy together, which I understand they are doing. My dogs showed very good taste in selecting an appropriate birthday present for me! Thank you, Liberty and Teddy Bear, for many evenings of joy with this book!

When my mom became bed bound and very ill, I looked for something that we could do together that would be something uplifting to her and something we could share together. I had bought a copy of this book because I love animals and enjoy the stories and enjoyed the beautiful photography. What I love about the book is that most of the stories are with a happy ending ( a few of the animals have moved on or passed away) and they are short, most being between 2-4 pages or so. It was perfect for me to read between 1-3 stories a visit and brought a smile to my mom's face. She had always loved to read and we always had animals, so this seemed a perfect fit. She already told me early on that when we finish this book she hopes that I can bring another because she is enjoying them so much. I find that they are the perfect length and there is not an intricate plot to keep in her head or something that we have to start and stop. The stories are heartwarming and we've learned a lot about the different animals as we have read. I will be purchasing the Unlikely Friendships when I finish this one most likely because we are enjoying this so much. I would highly recommend to children, older kids, older adults or anyone who loves animals. It is an especially nice book to read to someone who is small, ill or older that can't read for themselves. It is upbeat and just plain makes you feel good!

I enjoyed this book and read it quickly. I do recommend it for people who love animals. It proves that people can learn a lot from animals if we don't think of them as a lesser creation. The only really bad thing was that there were 2 or 3 chapters in which several paragraphs of each chapter were repeated word-for-word within the chapter. It was annoying. Only one chapter had a repeat set of paragraphs near the end, the chapter ended, and it seemed like it was incomplete.

Loved all of this except snake and dog picture. Don't know why dog would allow such a thing and does anyone think this is going to end well. All other pictures and articles illustrate why people shouldn't say in a derogatory manner that some people act like animals. If we acted more like most animals world would probably be a nicer place!

This book has something for everyone who loves animals. It is heartwarming, sweet, sometimes sad. It tells stories of orphaned or lonely animals who find love and their place in our tough world. The stories are brief, to the point, and warm the heart.

This book is great. We originally bought it to use during traveling with my 5yr old son who loves animals. It has some cool stories that are very short, about 2-3 pages each describing an unlikely bond between different kinds of animals. It includes pictures of each one and the stories are written simply enough to engage kids. My son enjoys having us read it to him and even reads some of it himself.

Really fun filled with a variety of heartwarming stories with plenty of different animals.

This is such a great read for the young right through the ages. It’s full of many lessons of love and kindness between animals that should be arch enemies. I explained to my grandchildren that it’s much the same in the human world, you can apply the same lessons, and looks for good in all individuals!

This was a thorough and easy to use guide, and I highly recommend it to those planning a trip to Nova Scotia. I enjoyed the conversational tone of the book. In future editions, though, I hope the author would beef up his recommendations for lodging and restaurants. The book is adequate in this regard now, but it would have been helpful if a few other options were listed. More restaurant recommendations would have been particularly nice, but I realize that restaurants have a way of coming and going, which would mean the guide's information runs the risk then of becoming dated.

Nowhere near as helpful as Lonely Planet Guides. Minimal accommodation recommendations, especially in the lower price ranges. Not sure if that's because Nova Scotia has nothing or the book just doesn't include them. Very brief sections on each area. Wish I'd just gone with another Lonely Planet guide.

A comprehensive guide with interesting and accurate information, easy to carry. Recommended.

Book exceeded my expectation. Thanks so much!

Traveled around Nova Scotia with this in our bag. Very good source of information.

liked the way this book is organized by area. I have not spent enough time reading it yet to provide a helpful review.

Review

"A broad and lucid survey of cryptographic strategies. These range fromsteganography and substitution ciphers to second factor authenticationand other recent trends in cybersecurity. She also provides plenty ofvariously coded examples for readers to decipher as practice, capped by a final challenge to go back and find the clues to a secret message thathave been distributed throughout. Her detailed description of how theGerman Enigma machine worked (and was hacked by the Bletchley Park group in World War II) is indeed "fascinating," as are the close analyses ofstill-unsolved messages such as the modern Kryptos inscription outside CIA headquarters." - Kirkus Reviews"This perennially popular topic leads kids into tales of war andespionage, and to better ways of passing messages in class. HereSchwartz discusses the frequently traveled paths of the Caesar code,Masonic symbols, and the Enigma machine, with lots of opportunity to try one's hand at en- and decryption, and she also explains how encryptionis vital to internet security and touches all forms of online andcellular communication. Necessary math concepts used to strengthenpasswords are smoothly addressed (and some teachers might be interestedin Schwartz's discussion of the practical use of prime numbers), alongwith such delectable tidbits as an illegal prime number that can unlockDVD encryption. Cartoon illustrations keep things cheery, as doesSchwartz's overall optimism concerning cybersecurity and the white hathacking. For middle-graders interested in the interplay of encryptionand their personal security." - Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

"Can You Crack the Code?" is a children's nonfiction book about how codes have been created and cracked throughout history. The author talked about early ways people used to keep a message hidden and then delved into codes. She talked about ciphers, encryption, and decryption at a level that was easy to understand. She talked about the development of different encryption strategies intended to make it more difficult to break ciphers. There was also trivia about specific ciphers used in the past, especially unsolved cipher messages. She explained older, simpler methods (which the reader can use to create their own coded messages or to decode the messages she puts in the book) as well as modern, complex methods used in cybersecurity. This book is interesting enough for an adult to enjoy while simple enough that child can understand. Overall, I'd recommend this interesting book.I received an e-book review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

FIVE STARS!!! ---"the recipes are authentic" is what one verified Purchaser said and she is so correct...maybe not glitzy...it is not eye candy it is the authentic older Puerto Rican cooks writing old recipes in English....so worth the patient reading of it and getting familiar with the layout....so delicious and so REAL OLD FASHION ABUELA (PuertoRican Granny) COOKING!!! NO LITTLE PACKETS OF ANYTHING BUT YES HOW TO MAKE ACHIOTE OIL (Annatto Seed Oil-as a natural coloring and for that authentic PuertoRican taste AND SOFRITO AND THE BASICS AND MORE!!! You want to taste the Real Authentic Puerto Rican food BUY THIS BOOK! You want to impress a Real Puerto Rican in your life....Want to cook like the older Puerto Rican cooks (before little packets of seasonings-with chemicals) are you Vegan and want to learn how to make delicious beans -get some basic ideas from this book-: ) Buy this book and take the time to get familiar with it...and you'll be cooking like the Older (turn of last Century) Puerto Rican Cooks.

I got this cookbook for Christmas and it's the 2nd book I have by this author. I'm Puerto Rican, and I've been cooking Puerto Rican food most of my life, but I wanted a cookbook that had different recipes than what my mom taught me.So for the good: the recipes are authentic, although not all of them are 100% relevant in my opinion. The bad: the recipes are hard to follow and the layout of them is very confusing.I understand the book was published a while ago (1970's I believe?), but it needs a serious update. I'm a cookbook collector, and it makes me so sad that both of my Puerto Rican cookbooks read more like a science experiment than a beautiful cookbook that showcases our food. This book needs a revamp and maybe a little editing of the recipes, they're not all necessary and quintessential to Puerto Rican cuisine (there is an entire section dedicated to pasta dishes! Come on.. the only pasta recipe that is required in a Puerto Rican cookbook is 'Ensalada de coditos' aka macaroni salad). There are basically no pictures of the meals in this book, so it might be a little challenging for a new person to make things from the book if they've never been exposed to Puerto Rican food. I do like that they have a Rum drinks section though! :)

First let me start off my saying, i recieved my book later than what others said. I recieved my cook books 6 days later than usual. Also this book is pretty solid. Im puerto rican by the way and these recipes are aunthentic. However, the booknis missing some recipes that i wanted to do which is why i purchased the book to find some of the recipes not there unfortunately :-( however, theres alot of good authentic recipes in here that are useful. You see, i was one of the unfortunate puerto ricans that didn't have my parent's to show me how to cook our native foods. So by purchasing this book, i have to say this did fill in those cracks and help me alot. The recipes and instructions aren't hard at all. They're actually very simple and easy to do and remember. Im happy with my purchase, but im still chasing down my favorite dishes that aren't in this book. All in all it was a good purchase. And i do recommend this nook for anybody. Its actually a great wedding gift to send our fellow women out there with. GET THIS BOOK! ITS AUTHENTIC!💋 Y BIEN PROVECHO!💋

First off the recipes are so on point to what my Puerto Rican Mother in law says. Second off, I accident clicked the buy with one click button and I totally missed the email when it was shipped ... what a pleasant surprise though! I absolutely love it :)

Nice purchase!... Item arrived as described, with ware and tear to the book sleeve. Well repaired by seller with scotch tape and extra plastic protection to hold sleeve together nicely. Pages in nice condition with no markings. Would say looks in new condition but can tell there is some age(minor yellowing)which was expected. All in all, description was accurate and, purchase as expected. Would purchase again.

Great cookbook. Everything in it is delicious. I find every recipe way to salty for my taste. That is the only thing I adjust.

Interesting cookbook. Lots of recipes that I will NEVER make because organ meats are not on my menu ever. Still, I'm not sorry I bought it. We are heading to the Caribbean on vacation and this cookbook lets me be more familiar with the foods typically eaten in the area.

Was recommended this book, and bought it then and there. I love it, my boyfriend is half Cuban, so these are recipes he grew up with.

This book is a fascinating read. I’m a luthier, I build some conventional stuff but I like to explore some original concepts too and this is a great guide for experimentation with musical instruments outside of my training. Such a great read with a great style of writing that inspires me to build stuff!

If what you want to do is make a guitar or violin from scratch, there are better books than this one. However, if you want to understand how and why musical instruments of all kinds are built the way they are, this book has you covered. There's information on instruments that are percussive, stringed (both plucked and bowed), and blown into. Most useful are the tips on how to get these things tuned in such a way that they are useful for making music.Check out the "windworld" web site for some examples of the experimental instruments Hopkin has created. The book contains information on building materials (with tips on where to get them), music and sound theory, and some history when relevant to an instrument he is trying to emulate. It's certainly not exhaustive, but gives you just enough to get your creativity flowing. I would have liked to see more illustrations and or photographs showing the assembly of some of these instruments, but that's not to say that the book isn't already full of illustrations. I just want more. One other thing to note is that this isn't a book about making toys for kids. No pie plate tambourines here. This is 175 pages of serious information and ideas, a bargain at this price.

This book is full of the "why's" if you happen to be thinking in tinkering with musical instrument building. At least that was my case anyways. Because although I am somewhat knowledgeable in terms of acoustics physics this goes from there and describes how the design affects the resulting sound with perfect teaching skills. I wish I could have that sense of value when teaching... not too technical and difficult but without leaving aside any important piece of information regarding the subject. From then on one can go and find more specific and technical sources if needed. But again, this is an excellent starting point for any person interested in experimenting with instrument making.

This is probably my favourite of Bart Hopkin's books. It is "The one to get".But they are all worth getting.I felt this exposed me to lots of strange new ideas and possibilities.I love pretty much everything Bart Hopkin does, his books and music. He is a very interesting chappie. If you like experimenting, and strange new sounds, and want to learn more about it, he's the go-to guy.......as well as Harry Partch's book "Genesis of a Music".................[this part of the "review" I'm just copying+pasting from my other reviews on Bart Hopkin books, since I think I have pretty much the same sentiment for all of his books, and I'm LAZY with multiple reviews (: ]This book is great, and opens up a lot of possibilities for new sounds. It is very imaginative! All books by Bart Hopkin that I own are excellent. They are all 5 star books for me. They all open up beautiful and strange new possibilities for sounds. The ones I own are- Musical Instrument design- Experimental Musical Instruments back issues on CD- Funny Noises for the Connoisseur- Plosives and Aerophones- Getting a bigger sound- Nice Noise [written with another author, Yuri Landman]- I own a few of Bart's albumsI think the only book I don't own is the "Wind Chimes" one, since I'm not really a "wind chime" kind of guy, but I'm beginning to wonder if maybe I should just grab it anyway, in case it is even a fraction as interesting as the other books. I don't know, though.... wind chimes..... I might give it a go.....Thanks for putting this stuff together!

I'd give this book a "6" if it were an admissible rating. Hopkin loads this book with literally hundreds of both familiar and newly-created instruments that can be made using simple tools. The instructions are step-by-step. The acoustic explanations are interesting and understandable but not required for success.I recommend Hopkin's book to hobbyists, tinkerers, those who have failed at making instruments on their own; music, art, or classroom teachers; musicians; and I think, most importantly, composers. For composers, new vistas of tone color, sound production, and tonalities appear - through acoustic instruments - no need for electronic synthesis or sampling!

Decent enough book, breaks down basic ideas. I would like if it covered all topics equally though, some topics get glossed over, namely double reeds. Also, this book doesn't include any practical plans but an overview of instruments that can be quickly hobbled together, not so much pointers on making finer instruments. All in all it's a good reference for tinkerers or envelope pushers.

For a technically-minded person with a working knowledge of basic physics, I can't imagine a better primer/reference on the WHY behind a wide variety of musical instruments. The writing is both clear and casual, though the thought and organization behind the various sections (the book begins with three general chapters on sound before tackling specific instrument families) is rigorous. Highly recommend it.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW TO WORK ON ANY INSTRUMENT AND MAKE . ITS REALLY A GOOD BOOK TO KEEP AROUND THE ROK SHOP AND THE HOUSE.
