Not only did I re-visit old haunts long forgotten, but I learned new things about my own stomping ground.Highly recommended.

This book was informative, and helpful on a recent road trip through the Southwest. The index needs improvement. Several times there was a restaurant (e.g. the Owl Bar and Cafe) or an entire town that I looked for in the index, but it wasn't listed. Later I would find that there was information about the place in the book, but I didn't find it until too late, because it wasn't in the index.

Comprehensive guide, planned a two week trip from it. Got us unlost when we took a wrong turn in the desert, no joke. My favorite LP book.

This book reads like my grandmother used to talk - or like a history book. The contents are amazing, and the author does refer back with reminders. "Joe Blow - the one who fell in the mud puddle in the previous chapter." However it is heavy on science and on names. It does not read like a novel. The movie took facts and mixed them up a bit. The events happened, but the true events happened over three decades and not necessarily to the person in the movie. I like knowing that kind of thing. Kathryn didn't have the bathroom issue - she was so light that she just used the regular bathrooms without comment. But the event happened at another time to another woman. There were other indignities that weren't brought up in the movie. The last third of the book is references - this is seriously a history book.

My comments are somewhat bias since Katherine Johnson is my aunt. I have seen the movie twice and read the book. My preference is the book mostly because of the additional information provided about Aunt Katherine. Many movie goers who only see the movie will miss out on a number of opportunities to see more realistically Aunt Katherine's nature, attitudes, and life's perspectives on work, family, and race. The movie is done very well and I commend all those involved in its production including the talented stars. It is a case of getting one slice of pie when you could get two slices. I suggest you eat WELL! ATBroady

I saw the movie before I read the book, and I am honestly not sure whether that was a good or bad thing. I loved the movie, and I loved the book, but they are very different.Generally, the book is a very fast-paced and interesting read about the black women who worked at the Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia, and their many and varied contributions to the field of aeronautical and astronautical research. It is part biography, part history of NASA, part history of segregation, part history of the civil rights movement, part history of the Virginia peninsula, and part history of women's rights. It is absolutely fascinating.That being said, the book is very different from the movie, so don't go into it expecting them to be the same. The movie is deeply touching, but it is actually fairly inaccurate, and it has been pretty aggressively whitewashed (see re: the Kevin Costner character). I think it is good to both see the movie and read the book, because one of the critical differences, and the difference that I think is missed entirely by the movie (to its great detriment) is the way in which issues of segregation were actually tackled at Langley. The movie makes it appear that enlightened white men of power were responsible for Langley's integration, when in fact the integration of Langley was almost entirely borne organically and of necessity. The book does a good job of explaining this, whereas that aspect of the movie is almost entirely fictionalized. I thought the movie took away some of the women's victories in this area (Katherine Johnson, for example, never went to the "colored" bathroom. She just used the regular, unlabeled bathroom, and no one ever told her not to), but the book gives the women more credit for their small yet trailblazing acts of defiance.One other note: the book actually covers quite a bit of complex scientific detail, but it is entirely readable to the layperson.I highly, highly recommend this book.

Hidden Figures has garnered much attention for being the heretofore forgotten story of the African-American women who helped build NASA (or to be more exact, the NASA field center at Langley). The media has boiled the tale of these women down to the oft-used cliche "heroes"; Shetterley's narrative digs beyond that.Sure, Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, et al are amazing, inspiring, and strong, but their own modesty over their roles in NACA/NASA history is telling: like many black pioneers of the Jim Crow era, they didn't step up for the attention or accolades. They stepped up to be "the first" in order to pave the way for those who would come behind them.Shetterley deftly reveals these cross-generational ties at Langley, as well as how for African-Americans, the professional is often the personal when it came to representation and community. The portions of the book that were the most fascinating to me were those pertaining to the links forged by the black community in the Southern Virginia area, and how they intersected with employment and residency in Hampton as the 20th century progressed.Shetterley's prose shined the best on the minutia of the women's lives, but the parts about NACA/NASA were just as interesting--and Shetterley's explanations of the mathematics and aeronautics is masterful. It was never pedantic, yet never overly simplified. As I reached the end, I was disappointed there weren't more pages, but also even hungrier for more stories about the intersection of race, gender, and science!Get this book! It is an excellent companion to Nathalia Holt's Rise of the Rocket Girls and Lily Koppel's The Astronaut Wives Club, for a comparison of the different experiences of women in the Space Race.

Good general coffee book, a bit too general in my mind. No enough on history and too quickly goes through terms. It is from 1997, so the post 2000 coffee shop reality is absent. Good book, as it says, its Coffee Basics from 1997.

A good read. a good reference into making your best coffee at home.Introduces new ideas for the various ways to make coffee.

This is a great introduction to the world of coffee for anyone getting into any part of the industry or if you just really enjoy coffee and want to learn more about it.

Book advertised as new, but obviously this book has been used for quite some time. The condition was good at best. The only redeeming value is that it was dirt cheap, but I would have paid another more for one I have better condition.

This book is excellent in describing and explaining coffee types and variations. My husband and I found it very useful.

I'm an intermediate level programmer with no formal computer science education. When I started this book I had about 5 months on-the-job experience with Python, and a couple months with C#. This book gave me the foundation I needed to take full advantage of what C# has to offer. Every chapter is very clearly written, and teaches step by step, just like the title says.I like to learn by doing, so I was glad that examples with sample data are included for every concept. First you learn the theory, then you try it out. For those days where I understand the gist of a topic and don't have time to do the examples, I can look at the finished code samples instead.The writing is very clear, and the editing is clean. The author is concise, specific, and never wasteful. This book has been a tremendous help at my job, and the skills I've learned have allowed me to take on many new responsibilities.That said, This probably isn't the best book for a first-time programmer. C# is not as intuitive as a language as Python or Ruby. However, if you have a little programming experience, and you really want to learn, this book is the first stop I'd recommend.

As a non-programmer trying to learn to be a programmer, I've read a lot of books on programming, most of which are quite lacking. My biggest gripe about programming books is that they might teach you certain concepts, but not necessarily how to use them or why they are important. This book does a good job of doing that. There is lots of handholding.Throughout the book, on pretty much every topic, you'll find things like "So you've learned about this, now we're going to work through an example of how you use it. And I'm going to point out why you do it this way and not that way. And things to be careful about." The "Notes" in each section are almost worth the price of the book.If you're an experienced programmer, you probably don't want the handholding, but for the inexperienced, or even somewhat experienced, the repetition is a much needed component of the learning process.I highly recommend this book and wish all other programming books were similarly written.

This is single handedly the best programming book I have ever read. I have used multiple books in the past for VB.Net, VBA, PHP, HTML, CSS, and Javascript; none of them have matched this quality. This book is easy to understand, offers excellent reasoning for C# code choices, and so far is error free. I am casually going through this and have not found a single mistake through Chapter 5. Great book, Highly recommend.

I concur with other reviewers on the material in the book. It covered both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 programming through Chapter 22, but the multi-tasking is only good for Windows 8.1, and I have Windows 7. I don't know if the multi-tasking will work in Windows 10. Anyway, I am disappointed I can't do actual multi-tasking with my environment.Almost all of his programming exercise work as written. I found two with working complete solutions, but they didn't work when I typed the code in. It wasn't my code, because I copied and pasted his code over mine, and still had the same error. I suspect they didn't include an updated library in the exercise folder.

I used this book as the companion text for an intermediate C# EdX course. Though I have used C# for many years, I didn't always have time in my job to immerse myself in the latest features of C# and the .NET framework, such as LINQ, Entity Framework, async and tasks. Reading this book and working through the carefully written (and working!) examples for this course gave me the necessary foundation that made me feel comfortable that I will be able to apply these techniques in a future project if the need arises The code that accompanies the book is of high quality and every project contains a Win7 and Win8.1 version. Hence, if you are a VS2013 C# programmer, and you want to learn C# or brush up on features, this is the book to get. John Sharp has written a number of books and his careful build-up of concepts throughout the chapters shows not only his knowledge of the subject matter but also his experience as a teacher.

I purchased this book and C# in a nutshell. I read the first chapter of both, and this book explained things much better with more examples. Having only minor experience in Visual Basic, C++, and HTML, the explanations are extremely helpful. The free examples online (provided by the book) are also very nice. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in programming (Windows store or desktop; it explains for both and works with Windows 7).Quick heads up, this book is around 800 pages, so it isn't exactly light reading; it is comprehensive.

"Step by Step" is exactly the phrase to describe this approach -- a welcome incremental, not overly simplistic, clear and informative trainer for anyone new to C# or .NET while not totally new to programming; as the book introduction explicitly cites "developers...not completely new to programming". Working through the example code is almost necessary for someone like me, in order to get the full picture of some of the concepts in context, esp. if moving from a procedural coding paradigm to this objective oriented approach. A great knowledge builder for the syntax of the language.

This is a really good C# book. I'm coming from a Java background but my company is beginning the migration of our current apps to C# so I need to get up to speed. This book is definitely helping me to do this. The code samples are spot on in terms of working as expected. John includes many helpful notes that help to explain or clarify important concepts. You can't go wrong with this book...

While I visited over 60 times in 10 years (we have a team there), I never had an incident involving risk to me or my belongings. There is no need for a bodyguard or any of the multiple vaccines. I drove alone for much of the country, always got help in getting directions, gave rides to people asking on the roads (they always offered money, I never accepted) without a single incident but the usual traffic police taking bribes (yes, I was speeding). As an American I can't bribe any foreign agent, so... Kyiv is a great European Capital with the real charm of real antiquity unlike many fake cities in Europe that try to look old as a tourist attraction (tourist traps). A really old city is not perfect, so one will find that in Kyiv, Lviv and Odessa as well. All of them well worth the visit for travelers interested in seeing and experiencing the real centuries old cities of Europe. From Pagan idols, the Viking influences, Mongols invasions, all left their mark throughout the territory of this very interesting civilization. Back to the book: worth reading. I found that even after that many visits I was breaking some protocols the Ukrainians hold in high regard.

This very small book (smaller format than a typical paperback, 168 pages, large font, double-spaced, big margins) is in fact only about half about "customs & culture". Instead, there are long chapters on very general travel and historical info -- the sort of thing easily available on Wiki or in the travel guide you also undoubtedly will have (I use Lonely Planet; I am in Ukraine now).I read this little book in a couple hours, and while useful as a breezy history, there were only about 40 useful pages -- the best were the 18 pages of "Business Briefing" (the author is a business development consultant).Additionally, don't belive that this is a 2012 book -- it was first published in 2005 and most of the travel info seems from then. The author refers to river ferries from Kiev (long cancelled) and lists websites last update in 2008.Overall, don't let the low price fool you -- it's still not worth it. And, shame shame on the author, supposedly an M.Phil. from Cambridge and speaker of 7 languages, for putting her name on such a deceptive little book -- I would have loved 168 pages of "customs & culture" from her, but that's not in here.

The book tries to intimidate readers regarding customs and superstitions but things are far more relaxed than the book made out to be. As of my two Ukraine visits in 2011 and 2012, this book is outdated. The book says that clearing customs is very difficult and the customs agents are stone cold stern and foreigner-hating. This isn't true, customs was a snap, agents very nice and my bags were never even inspected either time on arrival to Kiev from U.S. and certainly not when flying within Ukraine. Traditions/superstitions info was also outdated - e.g. it is NOT required to keep up with the host's alcoholism/toasting; anyone, not just the toastmaster, can toast; the young people I spent time with rolled their eyes and laughed out loud at the book's advice on flower giving (number and colors), not opening windows in a train because of "drafts", and many other superstitions: the urban 20-somethings don't believe in this stuff anymore. Contrary to what the book said, money-changing in the cities is a snap, there's a place to do it on almost every block and they don't try to rip you off. I followed the book's advice on gentlemanly manners, holding doors open, standing when a lady stands etc - and it was over the top, the well-bred ladies I was with were noticeably embarrassed by such treatment; none of them were used to it. (Can't say it hurt anything though.) Contrary again to what the book says, nobody batted an eye when I went hatless in winter. The above info might be useful in small western towns and around old folks, but useless in cities. The rest of the book is adequate, but you don't need this book to learn it; any guidebook will do, e.g lonely planet beats it hands down re: useful info: where to stay, eat, what to see.

Not a bad book but not what I wanted to see and was lower than what I expected. I had hoped for something with more depth. Perhaps good for those just starting to learn about Ukraine but I wanted to see more about myths, such as when young women sit on cement or stone and a Babushka scolds them for it, etc. And, I wanted to read more about wedding traditions, much more. It lacks more than it provides in my mind...sorry. Not a bad book, just not what I needed to read.

simple, to the point and good reading. I went to Kiev this year and followed many of the book's items about Kiev accurately. Nice interest points of cultures and customs of Ukraine. I would recommend for interested readers.

Most of the contents are very specific to areas of culture that do not pertain to most casual tourists, unless they are fortunate enough to be invited into someone's home, or they have business dealings in Ukraine. If you do, then this would be useful as an add-on, but most of the information can be found in the larger, more encompassing guide book.

Rather than using wards like dearth, know that a plasma is not a cake, nor kutcha a soup. As a Ukrainian-American, I know that those items are dead wrong. This makes me suspicious of the research and reliability of the rest of the book.

I read the book cover to cover. I already knew a lot about Ukraine. This book sticks with the facts. This book is fairly recent, and does a very good job of covering all aspects of Ukraine ,in a short consice manner. I recomend this book for anyone who wants to get a quick overview of Ukraine.

Well, birds are my favorite subject for portraits, so to say I eagerly awaited this book’s release is an understatement :-). And to cut to the chase, this book is the best bird photography book I’ve read to date — really. The author’s passion for birds comes through in the book’s introduction which bodes well — always helpful to photograph what you love. Not to mention that one of the very first photos is of two puffins touching beak-to-beak in an apparently affectionate way. Wow! The author humbly notes that luck had a lot to do with that particular shot. I love that for every photograph she gives not only the camera settings, but the equipment she used. Quite helpful! I noticed that she used flash on a photo of a duck in one of the first pics in the book and I’m eager to read later in the book how that works.I found very useful her advice on how to find out where birds are at a particular time. She gives website and other information on how to find out where the birds are when you want to photograph them. I much appreciate the time she spent explaining the strategy behind the autofocus system for photographing birds! It’s a complicated topic and she did a good job. I also heartedly agree with her recommendation to use back-button focus. Time well spent is the time the author describes for us how to stalk the birds, how to move so that you don’t frighten them and can get good pics. She also talks about types of blinds we can use to get closer. I didn’t even know there were types!Later in the book she discusses using fill flash to shoot birds and it’s one of the more helpful ways I’ve seen it discussed. In that section she points out that one reason to use flash is, if a bird has white feathers, it’s a much cleaner, brighter, more detailed result. So, now I think I’ll have to try it. She includes tips, among them head angles to look for in shooting a bird portrait, and I can say I have never seen that in another bird photography book. Especially her distinction between birds with binocular vision and those without because the angle you’re looking for differs accordingly. Who knew? I tend to shoot many of my birds in my own backyard so I appreciate her advice on how to attract birds as well as how to shoot ‘em.Of course any book and bird photography must have a section on capturing birds in flight but hers is especially informative. She explains how to configure the automatic focus system for flight pics and does it for Canon and for Nikkon. She also does quite a long section on pre-focusing which I haven’t seen before-usually it’s just a paragraph or two. Yay!At the end of the book she gives us a very welcome chapter on “ Bord photography hotspots“. She talks generally about where to find birds as well as giving many specific locations across the country. Got to make my travel plans!Again, after finishing the book, this is so far the best book I have read on bird photography. I look forward to reading other books by Marie Read.

Perhaps it’s because so many birds seem beautiful. Perhaps it’s because, for many, they seem the closest link to the natural world. Perhaps it’s because they are free from the bonds of gravity. Perhaps it’s because they require so much skill to photograph well. For whatever the reason, many photographers are attracted to capturing images of birds.Marie Read’s book covers every aspect of bird photography. The early part of the book includes chapters on equipment, exposure, and focusing, as well as a bit of field craft necessary to get close to birds, and composition. In later chapters she deals with content like photographing behavior, flight and the environment of birds. There is a short chapter on image editing and a listing of bird photography hotspots. She finishes by suggesting ways to show your work. None of this information constitutes introductory training for photography, but rather assumes the reader knows the basics, and aims at bird photography information.I prepared myself for a gotcha in the chapter on editing, and even though I wished for an explanation of some of the useful plug-ins, Read talked about just the specialized processing aspects for bird photography. I was delighted to find her suggestion that the details of white plumage could be pulled out with the judicious use of the highlights slider in either Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw. I’ve used this technique for years, but I’ve never seen it stated so succinctly.Read’s writing is clear and not overly technical, and even after twenty five years of bird photography, I could find no major points that were not covered. Read’s photographs show that she knows whereof she writes. The author is currently a Canon camera user, and though she makes reference to Nikon settings as well, sometimes I wished for just a bit more Nikon depth. (The author recommends the Nikon D5: I’m a lot happier doing bird photography with my D850. Also, add the newer very lightweight and fast focusing f5.6 500 mm to your Nikon big glass list.) If your primary camera is, say, an OMD E-MII you will have to make the translation to Olympus-speak on your own, but Read’s text will make that as easy as possible.Long-time bird photographers may not find much new in this book. On the other hand a few of the chapters inspired me to again try some other techniques.Twenty years ago, near the end of the film age, “The Art of Bird Photography” by Arthur Morris was the bible for bird photographers. Now it’s “Mastering Bird Photography”.

I enjoyed reading "A Year in Provence" years ago when it was first published, and since it was on the recommended reading list for our upcoming 3 week tour of France, I decided to re-read it. We will be spending some time in Provence, though not mingling with the locals to the extent that Mayle did when he and his wife moved from England and bought an old farm house to remodel and live year around. Mayle's adventures in hiring contractors and getting any work done on a reliable timetable are told humorously, thought with no disrespect to the French workers. They learn that in France, time is marked by seasons rather than days. They finally devise an ingenious method to get all the contractors to come back and complete the various unfinished projects around the house before Christmas - they send out invitations to a champagne reception to which the spouses are also invited. They know that none of the contractors will want their partners to be embarrassed by incomplete work !Mayle also writes of their journeys to visit fabulous restaurants and the French love of food and wine. He cultivates vines on his own property, and also learns to appreciate a perfect olive oil.The tales of the endless string of visitors, some mere casual acquaintances, and some of whom invite themselves to stay, are also told with humour and restraint, though you definitely get the impression that they felt put upon from time to time. I also discovered that it can be brutally hot during the summer months in Provence, so I'm glad we're going in early spring !"A Year in Provence" is not at all a travelogue, or even a guide book, but is a terrifically entertaining series of essays about living among the French in every season, being accepted (at least to a certain extent) into their culture, and enjoying all that this beautiful country has to offer.

We are traveling in Provence this summer, and a friend recommended that I find and read this book to get a feel for the area. Although it is an older book and times surely have changed somewhat in the almost twenty-five years since it was written, I found it to be highly entertaining as I read about his experiences living in the area. His style is conversational, as if he were sitting in your living room for a chat. His descriptions of the local people, and semi-quoting their conversations is, at times, hilarious. Mayle also does a credible job depicting the countryside, food, travel, and slower lifestyle of the natives of the area. I found this book so entertaining that I also read two others: Toujours Provence, and Encore Provence:New Adventures in the South of France. If you're looking for an insight into the area of Provence France from someone other than a factual travel guide, I highly recommend Peter Mayle's books.

Too many French language descriptions. I have a problem with English speaking authors using French language to describe people or things, especially when English will do just fine. I have a cursory knowledge of French but I had to keep my dictionary nearby when I read this. Other than that, this was an enjoyable read, especially since my wife and I visited the area a month before I read the book.

The book is so well written that It makes you dream of living in Provence. I will be travelling soon to the places in Provence to enjoy the amazing food, beautiful places and friendly people in France. It is sad that Peter Mayle passed recently and I'm very grateful that he wrote this marvellous book.

Being a neophyte to the “travel literature” genre, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But in Peter Mayle’s book “A Year in Provence”, I was surprised how absorbing the reading experience was, without the need for a distinctive narrative plot thrust. After a career on Madison Avenue, Mayle uproots his life and takes residence in the quaint and quirky region of Provence, located in Southeast France. Mayle and his wife realize they have much to learn in navigating their new surroundings. The novel’s structure is quite simple—each chapter is a month in the year—but Mayle’s observations cut into the essence of Provencal life, not just the hidden gems and signature qualities of the region, but reaches for the underlying motivations of the people, the way they move and think, and why no one seems to leave. Part of the enchantment is meeting all these characters—the plumber, the reclusive neighbor, the butcher, the unwanted guests. The prose is simplistic but thoroughly engaging, particularly when Mayle reveals small tidbits in timely places that echo latent cultural rivalries. One word of caution: don’t read on an empty stomach! (You’ll quickly realize what I mean)

I had to read this book as I was headed to Provençe for 2 weeks. I found the book very interesting. The author starts out with life in January and then each month there after. As the book progresses it gets more and more interesting how life is really like for an expat (from England). After we got settled in our apartment, I figured out we were staying within a few miles of where this author lives, though he never discloses exactly. I fell in love with the area from the first drive along narrow N900. At night, the sky is so crystal clear that you can see every star. We left just as the winds of the Fall were starting up. It was great place to visit and even better since I read this book. I don't think I could live here. The author set me straight on that one!
