I recently had to quickly understand some facts about the probabilistic interpretation of pca. Naturally I picked up this book and it didn't disappoint. Bishop is absolutely clear, and an excellent writer as well.In my opinion, despite the recent publication of Kevin Murphy's very comprehensive ML book, Bishop is still a better read. This is mostly because of his incredible clarity, but the book has other virtues: best in class diagrams, judiciously chosen; a lot of material, very well organized; excellent stage setting (the first two chapters). Now, sometimes he's a bit cryptic, for example, the proof that various kinds of loss lead to conditional median or mode is left as an exercise (ex 1.27). Murphy actually discusses it in some detail. This is true in general: Murphy actually discusses many things that Bishop leaves to the reader. I thought chapters three and four could have been more detailed, but I really have no other complaints.Please note that in order to get an optimal amount out of reading this book you should already have a little background in linear algebra, probability, calculus, and preferably some statistics. The first time I approached it was without any background and I found it a bit unfriendly and difficult; this is no fault of the book, however. Still, you don't need that much, just the basics.Update: I should note that there are some puzzling omissions from this book. E.g. f-score & confusion matrices are not mentioned (see Murphy section 5.7.2) - it would have been very natural to mention these concepts in ch 1, along with decision theory. Nor is there much on clustering, except for K-means (see Murphy ch 25). Not a huge deal, it's easy to get these concepts from elsewhere. I recommend using Murphy as and when you need, to fill in gaps.One more update: I've been getting into Hastie et al's ESL recently, and I'm really impressed with it so far - I think the practitioner should probably get familiar with both ESL and PRML, as they have complementary strengths and weaknesses. ESL is not very Bayesian at all; PRML is relentlessly so. ESL does not use graphical models or latent variables as a unifying perspective; PRML does. ESL is better on frequentist model selection, including cross-validation (ch 7). I think PRML is better for graphical models, Bayesian methods, and latent variables (which correspond to chs 8-13) and ESL better on linear models and density based methods (and other stuff besides). Finally, ESL is way better on "local" models, like kernel regression & loess. Your mileage may vary...They are both excellent books. ESL seems a bit more mathematically dense than PRML, and is also better for people who are in industry as versus academia (I was in the latter but now in the former),

The Kindle version is poorly formatted - the equations are not properly typeset, so nearly every single equation is unreadable and corrupted. Also, many of the figures/images do not appear properly. Basically, the Kindle version messes up most of the significant content.

Overall, I like the book and would recommend it. But the exposition could use significant polishing.Pros:- not mathematically heavy; lots of good heuristics that capture the math without delving too far in- choice of topics and their discussion (e.g. a great place to learn about kernel methods and graphical models)- easy to get hooked on if you mind the gapsCons:- read below...While the exposition is spotty (compare e.g. with Feller or Gelman), the author manages to follow a mostly linear exposition on fascinating topics.The book would highly benefit from editing provided by someone with a solid math background. In particular, there are more good mistakes than bad mistakes... Often when speaking with people with more stats background than me, the conversation is isomorphic to:Me: "...therefore, this statement is wrong. I think what he meant was..."Bro: "Ah yes. But you get it, that's what he meant"Me: "Then why didn't he write it?"But at least dialogues like these help cement ideas...Please correct me if any of the following contentions are wrong (I may update as I continue to read):Some parts are not even wrong, for example:Sec 2.1, paragraph above Eq. 2.19"We see that this sequential approach to learning arises naturally when we adopt a Bayesian viewpoint. It is independent of the choice of prior and of the likelihood functions and depends only on the assumption of i.i.d data"First, if you follow the thread of this section and therefore go back to the contrived coin-flipping example, you would see that in the non-Bayesian point of view estimates are also updated in a sequence of experiments. Hence, a Bayesian point of view in this case is no more "natural" than a frequentist. Second, by definition of i.i.d., a single fixed distribution is postulated to exist, and therefore a prior is in fact chosen: how do you define a posterior without a prior? But ok, I think I get it: a sequential approach fits in nicely with the Bayesian point of view - I agree, and that's all that needs to be said.Mathematically wrong:Same section, following 2.3.5, the statement(s) following Eq. (2.20)"Note that in the limit of an infinitely large data set m, l -> infinity the result (2.20) reduces to the maximum likelihood (2.8)."First, if F is a function of x, then the resulting limit for x to infinity must not involve x. Plus, the order and/or direction of his m and l in the limit is ambiguous. Second, what he meant to say is that for m and l both sufficiently large compared with a and b, we get that (2.20) reduces to (2.8).3rd paragraph before 2.2:"For a finite data set, the posterior mean for mu always lies between the prior mean and the maximum likelihood estimate for mu corresponding to the relative frequencies of events given by (2.7)."Again we are told to forget that the choice of a prior makes a difference. It seems the above statement is false: we may choose a prior that is heavily weighted on a single point so that this prior's mean is greater than mle.Paragraphs directly above the beginning of 2.2:"In fact, we might wonder whether it is a general property of Bayesian learning that, as we observe more and more data, the uncertainty represented by the posterior distribution will steadily decrease..." and then" this result shows that, on average, the posterior variance of theta is smaller than the prior variance."The "result", i.e. Eq (2.24) is an assertion of the form: "Suppose a,b, c > 0, c is fixed, and c = a +b. Then, if b goes up, a must go down." I don't see how this relates to what seemed to be his premise that increasing the size of a data set (sequentially or not) has the seemingly desired effect of reducing posterior variance. I suspect there are in fact limiting results in special cases that show the desired "steady" reduction in posterior variance...I wish he would have referenced themSection 2.3, following Eq. 2.44"... we note that the matrix \Sigma can be taken to be symmetric..."Actually, by definition any covariance matrix *is* symmetric.I could go on...All this said, it's worth repeating:I like the book, and not only because its mistakes or sometimes shady logic encourage the interested reader to try and discover correct/less wrong statements.

I can't give to this product a good rate. The formatting is one of the most problematic I have ever seen in Kindle book. It's a shame as the content seems to be interesting. So, please, see this review of the product as whole not of book's contents.

In general, most of the topics are not clearly explained, the chapters are not self-contained. In addition, most of the problems at the end of the chapters, consist in completing the steps between the book's equations, which I think is not very didactic, since it's just completing a bit of algebra. There are very few problems that really put you to think.

While the book tries to explain things as best as it could, you certainly need a stable level of statistics and linear algebra. Not anything you can't understand if you've done second year undergrad linear algebra/stats (and here I am only with first year linalg and second year stats background). So certainly not something to be taken up if you want to start things quickI'm not sure about the exercises since I have never tried it yet. Though one thing lacking is probably the range of examples given by the book. While it tries to draw some things from intuition, with the lack of examples it can still get hard to understand some points in the book. At the same time some parts feels a bit too wordy.Overall still a satisfying book to have, especially if you use it as course material

This is a wonderful book that can change anyone's life with its simple wisdom. It does go over The Four Agreements, but it isn't repetitive. Instead, it adds depth to the first four and adds an additional agreement which works well with the rest. This is a book for people who want to have a peaceful, happy, loving life. The profoundness of it is in its simplicity. It is not religious, nor do you have to do anything special except to look at people, experiences and circumstances with a different perspective. Not only is it life changing, but if everyone read this book and tried a little each day to practice the agreements, it would be world changing.

Like so many others, I got a lot of valuable guidance from The Four Agreements. But it all comes home in this book by don Jose Ruiz. This is the goal. This is the understanding of the goal. This is the understanding of the barriers to the goal. If this book doesn't inspire and give you the understanding to get your shovel and clear the pile of debris hiding your real, shining and pure identity, I've no idea what would!If you never read The Four Agreements, they are discussed, each in its own chapter in The Fifth Agreement - and with a depth and clarity that goes beyond the author's fathers original work that so many of us treasure.If you are buying just one book on personal/spiritual development, this is the book to get.

Reading this book put a finishing touch into appreciating and understanding better the message of The First Four Agreements. It is abeautiful Practical Guide to Living. Some months ago I read The Four Agreements and listened also to it read by Peter Cayote's excellent rendition of it. The CD, in my opinion, brings the message of the book to life. Being impeccable with one's word, not making assumptions, not taking things personally and doing the best one can (the four agreements) become clearer as one works to understand the Fifth Agreement of having an open mind ( being positive in your critical observations) combined with the art of listening to others. I love the message of this book and it is one that I will reread since it has a depth of information that I couldn't master in one reading.

I liked it. It really takes the four agreements to the next level. They do go over the first four agreements. I would almost recommend just starting with this book, but the book for the original four reads rather quickly.This has really helped me understand that life it what you make it. You can't control everything, but you can control how you react to it. Never stop learning and growing.

This book is easy to read and as titled, very practical. I have read many books on this subject and for me this is the one I would recommend first. I felt no bias of religion, nationality, race, gender, age, intellect, etc in the message only respect and sincerity. It has given me a method to change my world for the better and I am confident that others will benefit from this book too.

If I had not met Don Jose Ruiz himself to hear what he had to say, I would have been skeptical about the Agreements. It's easy for authors to write what they research rather than what they stand for. Don Jose had been a series of different kinds of fire for me: a brilliant light, a warming flame, a blast of renewal, a force for rekindling. I would encourage readers not just to look at the words but immerse themselves into the mediation of their meanings. It will elevate your thinking.

This book not only added a fifth agreement but expanded greatly on the first four. The fifth agreement is something I practiced for many years but kept judging myself as being weak because of it. I'm excited to put it back into practice but with more skepticism and more kindness toward myself. I'm very grateful for this book.

At first it seemed Ruiz was going to repeat the four agreements into greater detail, but as i kept reading, the book turned for the best. This book is a MUST READ after the four agreements. If you thought the four agreements was AT THE LEAST a decent book, you have to read the fifth agreement. I believe everybody will benefit from this book. Share it with everybody you know because this book is as real as it gets. Its the truth ;) (once you read the book, you'll understand what the "truth" really means)

I liked the format and layout of the book/passages. I would recommend this book to someone battling some type of pressure, whether it be because of daily life struggles or trying to get over the past, I chose this rating because if I'm going to help change the world, more people should start here

The premise of this book is very misleading. I’m honestly not sure how this happened. It seems that the authors are very empathetic to the needs of LD/ADHD students, yet, there is nothing in this book that will actually help those students.Learning Outside the Lines provides information on some basic study skills which would be very useful for those students that have never learned to study. Where I went to high school most-all of these were taught to us alongside the same tactics the authors deride (“Just study harder,” etc.). These are the same sorts of things you’ll be able to find doing a simple Google search for: “How to study well” (or) “how to become a good student,” things like: learning to compartmentalize assignments for greater manageability and maximizing information retention from textbook readings. The authors do make a point of allowing readers options to “individualize” their studying and education and to ‘take what works for you, burn the rest’ but will any of this actually specifically help someone with LD/ADHD? No.What this book does contain is solid but there’s nothing in this book that doesn’t apply equally well to non-LD/ADHD people. The personal accounts, yes. The actual information, tips and guides, no. It seems to, almost, take for granted that the reader has, somehow, overcome their disability (and past/emotional relationship to school) and is now, in college, ready to begin as if they were never LD/ADHD and merely need to learn “how” to study. There’s not one bit of information on how the ADHD students who, according to the epilogue, could hardly even stand still into their 20s, managed to actually do the reading (skimming, it seems this book so frequently advises), the outlining, the research and the classroom participation required to follow this advice in the first place. There’s hardly any explanation for how a dyslexic student who couldn’t write until junior high became an Ivy League honors English Major, and much less any sort of “process” that could help others with different disorders follow in his footsteps. It’s as if in their climbing the ladder of education, now trying to help others up, they’ve forgotten the bottom rungs exist.

Last December I was a college student with ADHD without hyper activity (formerly known as ADD) convinced that I would be expelled from school due to my grades. Try as I might I have never done well at school- no matter how hard I try I seem to come up short. I literally was considering the unthinkable to avoid the embarrassment of failing out of college and to end all the pain. A wonderful professor saw my struggle, sat me down and let me cry. Afterwards, she handed me this book to read over winter break. It was as if the authors had seen my life from inside my head. This book was exactly what I needed to revive me and give me the courage to face my challenges. As it turns out I didn't even need to worry about my grades but my worry had blown things out of proportion With Learning Outside the Lines in hand I came back to campus in January with a new outlook on my life.

The most valuable element of this book is simply the theme of "empowerment" that is woven into every story and chapter. Jonathan and David tell their stories, in a raw and honest fashion. They point out problems with the general education system that leave struggling students to believe that THEY are the problem. Of course, Jonathan and David dispel many of these myths.They include a pretty thorough description of effective study techniques. My only wish is that there was a "cheat sheet" summarizing a list of all of the strategies for specific learning situations. You have to weed through a lot of story-telling and description to find the strategies. Don't get me wrong, the stories and explanations are VERY important. It's just a bit challenging to find the Action Plan. Nonetheless, this is a great resource.I found many useful tips, but I mostly appreciated the author's perspectives, often captured in interesting sound bites:- Referring to study skills as "Power Tools"- Explaining how to "unpack the lecture" in order to take good notes- They are frank, but they are real: "Most study skills presented by teachers operate under the assumption that all teachers can lecture well."- They are practical, endorsing what they call "Pragmatic personal learning."- They emphasize efficiency: "Cover-to-cover reading is NOT the way to go..."I am an expert in this field, and I am a big fan of this book! (By the way, it's GREAT for ALL students, not just students with ADHD/LD.)

Troost returns to the South Pacific in "Stoned with Savages" for further adventures and mis-adventures.As with his first adventure related in The Sex Lives of Cannibals, the writing is entertaining and fresh, and very unlike other travelogues and biographies. This 2nd volume is a bit more polished than the first, and covers more ground (more islands, multiple countries), but with a similar tone.It's not typical lowbrow travel humor, which usually plays off expected American audience ignorance of the "rest of the world", and bores the many of us who are not ignorant, nor is it the dry cultural observations of a guidebook.Instead, the self-effacing humor narrating the adventures and mis-adventures of author Troost and his girlfriend in one of the most obscure parts of the globe provides plenty of chuckles (and actual laugh-out-loud moments) while providing a meaningful look at unusual cultures (eg, he talks to people who experienced cannibalism), while living abroad where few people have even traveled.The writing is briskly entertaining with a conversational style, and the complete absence of "this is dumb, why am I reading this?" moments.In the era of the internet and accessible international travel, a travel narrative that isn't either humdrum or sensationalist is rare, and a humorously entertaining one is a truly unusual find. Both this and his previous book are Highly Recommended.

I enjoyed the book and went to a kava bar to try kava from Vanuatu. I was okay with the fact that it tasted like dirt because I was interested in the effect, but it did nothing more than numb my tongue. Then I was then told that it's supposed to be downed in one fell swoop. So I did that, but it just made me nauseous. Maybe one has to go to Vanuatu to experience what the author did.

Not as captivating as his first book (Sex lives of Cannibals), still funny, irreverent and some interesting facts and titbits about a part of the world which is not known to us and certainly not from such an intimate and lived point of view.

This was my first Troost book, and I found it laugh out loud funny, witty, and a light, fun, fast read. It was well worth the day it took to read it. I'm not going to suggest it was profound, thought provoking, or a must read from a literary sense, but it's one of those books that you read when you want something funny and light. It sounds like the people who first read "Sex Lives of Cannibals" were somewhat disappointed in this book. (Which just tells me that "Sex Lives of Cannibals" must be hilarious! Maybe everyone should read this one first.) Without having read that to compare to (therefore rating purely on a stand-alone basis), I found this book really enjoyable. Troost's witty humor, sarcasm, and ability to poke fun at himself make for an enjoyable read (especially between books tackling heavier subject matters). It's like taking your own mini vacation.

I read his 1st book ''Sex Lives of Cannibals'' and loved it. After reading this one, I wanted to read every book he's written. It's such delicious reading,that I read it slowly to enjoy every bite and morsel. I also would like to thank his wife for affording him the time to write these wonderful stories/books. How anyone could not love and enjoy these books is beyond me. Thank you J. for the many hours of enjoyment, education andhumor which shall stay with me long after their reading!

I love J. Maarten Troost's books. He is hilarious, sarcastic, honest and has a good sense of humor toward the disasters that arise. This is the perfect book for anyone feeling stuck in a career rut or with a wanderlust spirit. This book and The Sex Lives of Cannibals are my favorites--I keep buying them, lending them off, and having to re-buy.

Another good one from J. Martin Troost. Have a good laugh and enjoy the trip. Don't let his book titles keep you away. When I first started reading his travel adventures, I was embarrassed to take his book The Sex Lives of Cannibals to the checkout counter. But it was well worth it.

If you are a fan of the travel genre, read Troost's first book, are fascinated with islnad life, or simply dream of getting away this is the book for you. This book has some humor, adventure, descriptions of island life food, and geography, but also covers things like the politics and effect of the outside world. Where Troost really excels in his writing is taking all these aspects and rolling them into an easy to read and follow story that is also entertaining. I would recommend reading his first book, "The sex lives of cannibals" beforehand, It does end up setting this books theme and explaining some of the history.
