Beautiful cover art. This title is a classic! A mustHave for adults and children alike.I rate this book five stars for content.Please note, this edition does not have theOriginal black and white illustrations. I was very disappointed by that. But, it’s still a gem!

I'm reading this as an adult, so I might be expecting too much. It's not as charming as I thought, and it didn't meet my expectations about being set in the pleantries of a garden, but it seems like a perfectly good children's book. It might also make the kid think. I like it

Fun YA time travel story. Charming but seems dated. I enjoyed it and had planned to pass it on to my 11 year old granddaughter but I just don’t think it will hold her interest...a tad too old-fashioned.

More dated than I remember from when I read it as a kid. I got it for my kids (9 and 10), read it first before handing it on, and realized there's a lot they won't be able to relate to at this point. Nevertheless, it's fun.

There are certain books the reviews for which always start along the lines of, "I remember reading this book as a child ..."). Often, those books are well-written, mellow, old-fashioned, almost dreamy, mood pieces. There is rarely any discussion of who might want to read the book now. That's more or less what we have here. This book is certainly a classic. The writing is restrained and the development of the writer's themes is subtle. It is a wonderful example of the best in English children's writing, and quite worthy of all those fond memory reviews. But, do you want this book now for your modern child's library now? I think the answer is yes, not because the book is essential reading, but because you should have it on the chance that you're young reader will respond to it. Would I encourage every kid to read this? No. Would I invite some kids to try it? Yes. Would I want it on the shelf to be discovered. Absolutely.

Best children's book ever. It's absolutely a must read. It never gets old., having our own copy now makes it convenient to read it any time. Shipping was fast, the book was brand new.

A few years ago I decided, as a senior citizen, to take a nostalgic trip back to childhood and read some books in the children's section of my local library. My first choice was Tom's Midnight Garden. This enchanting novel, with a post-WWII background, should be included in contemporary elementary school required readings. When I was younger, I watched a movie created by BBC titled "Tom's Midnight Garden". The movie was wonderful and mystical and years later, I found the book and decided to buy it. I was NOT disappointed. This book is incredibly amazing for a children's book, and deals with the fact that dimensions and time can overlap. I would definitely recommend that you read this to your children, or even to yourself. Definitely read this one!

This book is extraordinary in the photographs and writing. My husband had heard about this book and asked our local library to purchase a copy. Turns out they had already ordered it and he was the first to check it out. I started looking through it and tears came to my eyes seeing such strikingly beautiful images of our wonderful Chicago architecture. I immediately asked my husband to get this book for me for Christmas which he did. I also gave a copy to a friend as a gift. I deeply appreciate both the writer's and the photographer's talent in making this extraordinary treasure.

Fabulous, absolutely fabulous. So often we walk through the city and admire the architecture. This book highlights and provides a view of the interiors' hidden treasures.

This is a beautiful book. The photography is excellent and there is just enough writing about each entry to satisfy your curiosity. I especially like the fact that it covers a broad array of buildings, i.e., commerical buildings, houses of worship, private residences, etc. The quality of the paper is also excellent. It makes me want to handle the book with care. The total presentation of this book truly makes it a work of art. It was worth every penny.

I really enjoyed “The First World War” by John Keegan. For me it was slow reading and I was impressed by the concepts and details he gave. Yes, I skimmed over unit names. I saw a film on WWI and wanted more info on how it started. He filled in those details impressively. The author's theory is that after the assassination the Russian mobilization to defend their allies forced Germany to declare war. It was too risky not to.He talked about what some of the counties experienced in previous wars. So, every country seemed to think it would last a few months with little risks and more territories to gain. He talked some about the large number of French generals fired after a few months of war. Were they all inept or did folks have too high of expectations on them?He also talked about battle strategy of coordinating artillery and troops. How the battle strategy evolved, how the trench systems evolved, and the problems the commanders had of getting real time info. There are details about pre-war battle plans and how logistics drove them. Population unrest, food shortages, office politics of the generals.I enjoyed the book and am gonna read more of his. Just ordered another one.

Great, great book. Explains lots of things I thought I knew something about: the stumbling into the war, the mobile war of 1914 followed by the trench war, the massive asymmetry between offensive and defensive weapons that led to such massive losses of life, the interplay of politics and military strategy, the impact of personalities on the frontline, the importance of the US entry into the war, the collapse of the German army, when the soldiers just got fed up with death. At the end of 1914, the generals already knew that the war could not be won (by either side) without massive loss of life, and yet they wore on. Devastating in its portrayal of human gallantry and stupidity on a massive scale. You will never see one of those beautifully kept military cemeteries in France without feeling the sadness caused by such sacrifice and such mindless suffering.

I wanted to absorb a comprehensive over view of WWI. I have read other of Keegan's work with benefit to me. But I found it hard going. I could only read about 25 pages at a sitting. Why? Because I could only absorb so much awful stuff at one go. I did meet my goal. I understand a very great deal of the war as a whole story, all the bits I had in my mind for years, now have a frame to organize them. The First World War is a massive subject. Keegan does a great job capturing the essence of the war without dragging the book out as long as the war itself. When covering a topic of this scale, it is impossible to dive into all the details. So Keegan's overview is not suitable for the well read student. But for those who are a novice to the subject or have only read about parts of the war or seen it in documentaries, Keegan is a great place to start. Keegan explains at depth how the war began. He discusses the spark and what transformed an isolated tragedy into a juggernaut of world slaughter. It is fascinating to read how military strategy preempted political reality, and misguided belief in the quick decisive victory, sent millions to their graves. As a avid reader of WWII, it is interesting reading how the strategy of WWI influenced the path of WWII. Especially interesting is reflecting on what the outcome of WWI would have been with the technology of WWII.But with the end in sight (at least the Germans thought so), the war takes a different shape as it hardens into trench warfare. Keegan explains how the tactics and strategy for trench warfare evolved throughout the war. He discusses the uses of new technologies like chemical warfare, indirect artillery, machine guns, aerial combat, and tanks. Keegan also explains that all these new technological advances only serve to stack the body count without delivering the knockout blow so desired. He shows over and over again how the lack of development in communications prevented breakouts from sustaining their momentum. In fact, it would take another war to hone these techniques even after the technology was available. Even in Normandy during WWII, the allies found it difficult to coordinate infantry with armor formations and close air support. Keegan also explores the expansion of the war as a European war grows to consume most of the world. He covers the war at sea which results in the near annihilation of the German High Seas Fleet.But the book is not perfect. There could be more maps to reflect the narrative. Keegan does allow national pride to color his discussion of British actions. The end of the war lacks the coverage it deserves. Others have pointed out the gripes. But, it is hard to please everyone. Keegan still delivers an excellent overview of the "Great War". I recommend this book highly to anyone interested in history. Understanding WWI is fundamental in appreciating the history of the last century. The lessons of the world wars should be understood by anyone interested in foreign policy.

Mr. Keegan's book gives great detail of the various maneuvers that made the war the complex and horrible affair that it was. His conclusions suggest that (I'm paraphrasing) real causes and benefits of the war are difficult to ascertain, and from reading his study, that makes perfect sense. He truly underscores the utter waste of human conflict. The work has the strength of strong organization. I wish there has been more maps in the book to assist in pinpointing the described action. Also, despite the late entrance of the United States into the war, there could have been more on the role Americans played and the intriguing situation that existed in the nation as the U.S. entered the war.

About the Author

Marie J. Morreale, OTR/L taught occupational therapy assistant (OTA) students for 17 years at Rockland Community College, State University of New York. As an adjunct faculty member, her various courses included: Professional Issues and Documentation; Geriatric Principles; OT Skills; Advanced OT Skills; Therapeutic Activities; and Advanced Therapeutic Activities. Marie contributed significantly to curriculum development and served briefly as interim coordinator of the OTA Program. Marie graduated Summa Cum Laude from Quinnipiac College (now Quinnipiac University) in Hamden, Connecticut, and has clinical experience in a variety of OT practice settings including: inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, long-term care, adult day care, home health, cognitive rehabilitation, and hand therapy. She maintained certification in hand therapy for over 20 years and also served several years on a home health Professional Advisory Committee, consulting on quality assurance issues. Marie enjoys professional writing and, in addition to co-authoring the prior two editions of this documentation manual, has published several other occupational therapy texts:  The Occupational Therapist’s Workbook for Ensuring Clinical Competence and Developing Clinical Competence: A Workbook for the OTA. Additional published works include a chapter on documentation for The Occupational Therapy Manager, Fifth Edition, several OT articles and web-based continuing education courses. She is also a test item writer for the American Occupational Therapy Association continuing education products. In her spare time, Marie is active in her church community and has a passion for travel.   Sherry Borcherding, MA, OTR/L is retired from the faculty of the University of Missouri–Columbia, where she taught for 15 years. During the time she was on the faculty, she taught disability awareness, complementary therapy, clinical ethics, frames of reference, psychopathology, loss and disability, long term care, wellness, and a three-semester fieldwork sequence designed to develop critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and documentation skills. As a part of the fieldwork and documentation courses, she filmed simulated occupational therapy interventions for student use in class. Three of these “movies” are available on www.efacultylounge.com with this edition of the book. Sherry graduated with honors from Texas Woman’s University, Denton, Texas with a BS in occupational therapy and went on to complete her master’s in special education with special faculty commendation at George Peabody College, Nashville, Tennessee. Along with her staff positions in rehabilitation, home health, and pediatrics, she assumed a number of management roles, including Chief Occupational Therapist at East Texas Treatment Center, Kilgore, Texas; Director of Occupational Therapy at Mid-Missouri Mental Health Center, Columbia, Missouri; and Director of Rehabilitation Services at Transitional Housing Services, Columbia, Missouri. Sherry is a lifelong learner. Since her retirement, she has further expanded her private practice devoted to complementary and alternative therapies. She is certified in CranioSacral Therapy through Upledger Institute, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and is attuned as a Reiki master. She is currently learning Eden Energy Medicine. For leisure, Sherry enjoys music, English country dance, and all kinds of three-dimensional art. Her pottery has appeared in several local shows over the past several years.
