So far, I have loved everything I have read by Lindsay Buroker, including this book. She writes very well and has demonstrated a mastery of her craft. Whether it is writing mechanics, characterization, setting/world building, dialogue or plot, she excels at it. Yes, there may be the odd typo or misused word, but they are very infrequent, and no more frequent than I have found in traditionally published books. One thing especially stands out for me in Ms. Buroker's indie books. I have read her complete 'Dragon' series, her complete 'Encrypted' series, and am well into book six of her 'Emperor's Edge' series. She has never done a long, boring introductory rehash of previous books in the series. She seamlessly and seemingly effortlessly, integrates enough previous material in each new book in a series, so that a new reader is not lost. I have read many series books by well established, traditionally published authors who have not mastered this ability. I won't name names, but in one series, the author managed in each new first chapter to say something alone the lines of "Hello, my name is...my children and husband are... I used to be a ... but retired until... drew me back in. One day a ... did... and now I must ... until this evil is destroyed." Every single new book!! How old does that get? This from a well established, traditionally published author! I'm not bashing any particular author; I just want to emphasize that not all traditionally published books are great, just because they are traditionally published. If an indie author has talent, as Ms. Buroker does, it shows in the finished product. The first few books in this series had an overarching story line but a definite conclusion to the immediate plot. Book four had a cliff hanger and Ms. Buroker warned that the overarching storyline had reached a point where subsequent books would have cliff hangers, because of the way the overarching story line was developing. I normally loathe cliff hangers, although I do like series. Maybe I'm only content with these cliff hangers because I came into the series when it was completed, so I never had to wait for an ending. However, I think it was also because I came to view the series as an epic tale that was just broken down into manageable sections. This series was not written like an author's ploy to sell the next book, but like in 'Harry Potter' or 'Lord of the Rings', the tale was epic and followed organically from the first to the last. Regardless, these books do not really stand alone and should be read in order, to get the most from them. I am very frugal (read--cheap) about book prices, so I thought carefully about making the commitment to the entire series. The first book was free, however, which gives a good idea about whether or not one might like the series. Once that decision was made, the first three books were available in a boxed set for $0.99. The rest of the series was reasonably priced, so it was not that expensive to make the commitment. It was well worth the money, so anyone hesitating because of cliff hangers or lack of stand-alone format can be assured that the series will not disappoint. This book and the others had one problem that I did dislike, and that was the heroine's insistence upon not killing anyone. Maybe I am just bloodthirsty, but when fighting evil, sometimes one judicious kill can save a multitude of innocent lives and save one's cause. Amaranthe's insistence upon the 'no kill' policy seemed as if it was being carried to unrealistic extremes and sometimes I found her annoying because of it. However, that was the only fault I found with the series. The romance between the hero and heroine has continued to develop and there is as much love demonstrated as there is sexual tension. It is a credit to the author that she creates this beautiful romance between Sicarius and Amaranthe without relying on any of the usual sex scenes. The other characters drawn into Amaranthe's group also continue to develop and grow as individuals. We can see the physical, emotional and psychological changes that have taken place in them since the first book. By this point in the series, they are familiar friends, who we know well and cheer on.This is a wonderful series that should appeal to all ages from young adult to seniors. The protagonists are incredibly likeable and very human with their combination of flaws and virtues. The overarching plot is an epic tale of good versus evil and the individual plots are fast paced and rollicking good adventures. This volume is a very good book, but it is the series as a whole that potential readers should consider. I highly recommend it.

What a fabulous continuation of the Emperors Edge story.Amaranthe is trapped and facing the deadliest enemy yet - and her greatest fears are realised in a tragic way. This book also gives so much more insight into where Sicarius has come from and how he was shaped.Maldynado is also facing his greatest fears - and struggles in leadership. He wants to prove himself and battles the ghosts of his past to do that.Forge has shown they are even more determined and deadly - and all our friends are facing battles to the death.Sespian also has to overcome his own issues and faces a devastating revelation.

I love reading the series, the characters are entertaining, intelligent and complex. The plot has twists and turns that make it very difficult to put the book down. The only reason I am giving it four stars instead of five is the main character not wanting to defend herself and so against killing those that are trying to kill her her and others is ridiculous. If somebody’s trying to kill you you defend yourself by whatever means necessary. That particular theme gets overbearing and ridiculous. In fact it gets hammered to death over and over and over. If not for this flaw it would probably be worth six or seven stars.

I was looking forward to the second half of Conspiracy, since it ended in the middle of the story. However, I was never able to get into the story this time around. One of the biggest problems I had was the POV it was being told from. Because of what happened at the beginning Blood and Betrayal, the team was immediately split up with Amaranthe by herself and then the rest of the team together. The team's story was being told by Maldyando, which at times was annoying, like his character. Sicarius has little roll in over half the story, and there is a lack of action/crazy ideas to use to solve problems because Amaranthe was separated brought down the overall story. It also dragged on; maybe due to my feelings towards the book played a factor, but it was difficult for me to finish so I skimmed a lot of the second half.I don't know if I will continue on with the series. I really liked the first two books in the series; the third was good, but ending in the middle forcing me to buy the fourth to find out what happens was a drawback. Now with the fourth being slow and drawn out and also open ended... For the cost I don't know if it's worth it.

This review is for all 8 books in the series. I hesitated to start it, as I am not generally a fan of fantasy. But I was glad I did, though it started out rather slowly for me, and picked up speed as I went along. The principal characters are very well developed, and the various story lines intriguing and reasonably complex. The series has echoes of Star Wars (without Yoda, Darth Vader or The Force), Star Trek (in its adventuring and a couple of the characters), and Little Shop of Horrors at one point. And too many others to mention, especially in the names of places and people. But it is unique in itself, and if you like strong female lead characters, as I do (I am male, by the way, and old), I think you will find many hours of reading pleasure in the world of Amaranthe and Secarius. I also felt Ms. Buroker ended the series at just the right point. Some authors who write a series cannot seem to end it, or to end it in a satisfying fashion. Ms. Buroker did not fall into that trap. Kudos to her for that and this series.
