About the Author

R. F. Symes, better known as Bob, was a celebrated figure in British geology and mineralogy for almost 50 years. He joined the staff of the British Museum in 1957 in the natural history department and eventually earned a BSc in geology from Birkbeck College. Symes was largely responsible for bringing the first electron microprobes to the Natural History Museum. Alongside P. G. Embrey, he discovered the minerals parkinsonite and mereheadite. A pink oxychloride, symesite, was named in his honor in 2000. He was also awarded the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for his services to the Natural History Museum and to mineralogy. R. F. Symes died in 2016.

I gave this to my niece for her 8th birthday and it was absolutely her favorite gift. Every time I see her she tells me how much she loves it. The book comes with a full-color poster, which she hung on her wall and studies every night so she can tell me some new fact about crystals every time I see her. As if that wasn't enough, the book also comes with a CD of crystal and gem clip art, so she can make her own arts & crafts projects. Great value for the money.

I first got this book at the library but after renewing it 5 times I realized I had to buy it because my son won’t put it down. My 2nd grader loves it.

Purchased this book for my 10 year old grandson who is very interested in gemstones and where they come from. Also purchased two other books for him that were more geared toward adults. He is an avid reader and wise beyond his years. I honestly thought that he would be more interested in the other gemstone books. This is his favorite and I think it is because of all the illustrations. Perhaps too, the font is larger and the way it is presented in the book, it is great information that is not overwhelming to a younger person.

My 6 year old son loves these books - they are really fun for kids (and grown ups!). The pictures are lovely and high quality, and there is a ton of information in them. Highly recommend.

The book is just beautifully illustrated with significant facts, however it is not too in depht. It did come with a large poster that can also be used as a visual aide and with a CD . It was fine for my ten year old daughter to do her research on crystals with, ( which is the reason why we bought it) but she had to find additional information in other books and the internet in order to get her research done. Overall everyone in the family did enjoy looking through its pages and learning the facts.

We are using this as our supplement to our geology class. Very informative and relevant to all ages. Great find!

Very informative, well illustrated, scientifically researched, some important info about superstitions and crystals. My 12 year old granddaughter was reading this book with me and found it a good addition to her school science lessons.

My 5 year old son has developed an intense interest in rocks, crystals, and gems. He LOVES this book even though a lot of the information is over his head----it is chock full of beautiful pictures and interesting information. It is a book that will definitely grow with him---I'm in my 40's and learning things I didn't know about crystals and gems. :)

Excellent book. I am so glad I purchased it. Anyone interested in law in respect to human rights and equality should pick up this book. Well written and timely, it is a really great history lesson through case study. Eye opening and at times jarring, the authors educate the reader on the history of both queer justice and injustice within the court system. Highly recommend.

A good quick read about the history of policing sexuality, gender, and queerness in the United States with a focus on the disproportionate discrimination of queer people of color.

When working in Oklahoma where we are told that we are not really after equal rights, but special rights, because we are so uppity and self serving, the stats presented in this book is quite helpful in combating such ingrained homophobia, transphobia and racism. There really are ways the intersection of poverty and multiple minority disenfranchisements (such as being black and transgendered at the same time) indicates very high risks of negative, hurtful, and unfair consequences within the systems we rely on, even if the actual crime committed is exactly the same as what others do all the time and not even get slapped on the wrist.

Well done. It was really well written and gets to the point.

Love this book great way to introduce people to criminology in the LGBTQ

Must have book if you are interested in the intersections of prison/criminal legal system and LGBTQ people. Also great for people who don't care so much about that. Great look at the way ideas about queer people have grounded modern notions of criminality.

Informative, nuanced, and thought provoking.

I took my time reading this book because one, it's such a heavy book and two, I could not handle all the horrible stories in one sitting. I needed time to process and not get so upset because reading it while being a member of queer people of color community described in the book makes me feel so emotional, like it could happen to me too had I been born in those places at those times.Overall, I think the authors did a good job in compiling all criminalization acts in US against queer people, if there is one thing I feel is not explored more is the Queer Asian Pacific Islander demographic. I feel that there is limited stories and that when the authors use the term People of Color it often only refer to blacks and/or hispanics population and not API/other.
