This was recommended on the Into Mind blog along with some other wardrobe/personal care reads. I checked out most of the books on the list from the library, but this one pulled me in and I couldn't put it down. I ended up keeping it past the due date because I didn't want to send it back! Then Christmas rolled around and I bought it as a gift for my older sister and *almost* bought a second one for myself. Shortly after I gave it to her I caved and bought a copy for myself.I have seriously considered buying 3 or 4 copies just to have on hand to give to girlfriends that would appreciate it.

I wanted to love this book. Instead I felt overwhelmed and a bit bored. The writing is clever, the idea great. It just didn't hold my interest as I had hoped. I am sure others will find it dearly engaging. There are some smart contributors and that makes the book fun to flip through. It did remind me of being an art student in the early 90s, which was nice to go back to in my mind. And some of the surveys are just plain fun to read. I like the surveys that are on the book's website.

Loved this book and introduced it to my book club for our December reading. I hosted the meeting and invited participants to bring scarves they have, but never wear, for a scarf swap. Discussion about book was lively with people talking about favorite clothes and remembering their moms outfits. This book was a hit, and busy women (especially around the holidays) can read it by skipping around back and forth. Different sections can be appreciated as they appeal to you, your age, your sensibilities.

Like crossing room to room, privy to absent yet intimate threads of thought and interaction. This book casually invites you to examine the mantle of femininity passed between generations.

This is a great book to just pick up, open to a random page, and read a couple interviews. Interesting points of view, fun stories, and I'm not even that in to fashion.

Too wordy! Too much information about the womens' lives and not their choices of clothing.

A book with a great premise that starts out strong, but soon slips into self indulgence on the part of the authors and becomes boring and a chore to read even if you skip the absolutely ridiculous parts.

I love the Kindle version of this book, so much easier to read than the print version and a whole lot smaller too. The women's stories are very diverse, and inspire me to give more thought to the way I dress. Highly recommended.

I bought the PDF version direct through the raywenderlich site, so I can't comment on things like binding, presentation, etc.The content is excellent, though. Despite the 'Advanced' title, this books is suitable for the novice (i.e, you've never used lldb before, and can't read machine code; that was me). I haven't yet worked through the entire book, but I've learned a great deal from what I have worked through, and I'm no longer afraid to fire up lldb and start trying to RE some code (suggestion: try working on your own code first, as it'll really help you to understand when you're going wrong).One of the reasons to buy it from the raywenderlich site is you get free updates to the pdf, and these include not only errata but new content from time to time.As a novice myself, I've no idea whether it's suitable for those that already know how to RE and debug with lldb, but it's great for those who don't. I'd only suggest you should have some experience of writing objective-c and/or swift code yourself.

Kerry's books are part of the reason I'm entering the medical field. I've loved everyone of her books. Her writing is great and she has a way of explaining what goes on the in the medical arena. I especially love the collections she's put together. It's a good way to get an understanding of what some people have run into while in the medical field. After reading her books, at least I have an idea of what I'm in for, lol.

I am on a mission to read all of the books in this series. As they are all, this one was amazing! Plenty of laughs and gasps! I said to my husband one night, "Wow! I am not getting through this one as fast. I must be tired lately." But, after I was done I discovered, it was a double edition! Woo-hoo! I wish I would have known to be excited for that during it. I highly recommend these books!

She’s done it again. Some funny, hilarious stories. A few very sad, sobering stories. But all very thought provoking. Many times you’re reading and shaking your head wondering “what we’re they thinking”. Can wait fore her next book.

This is my favorite of the reader submission books. I actually found myself laughing out loud at some stories, gasping at others, and cringing at many of the stories, but entertained by them all. This is a book I'll definitely reread down the road.

While I generally take these stories as truth, I would like to point out that the person in another brick in the wall would be at that job for “ten years next month”. It also said near the beginning of the story that she was new, thought her partner didn’t like her, and that she considered calling an Uber to take her home.Here’s where I wonder if this story is true...Uber’s mobile launch was in 2011...in San Francisco. At the time, you would be picked up in a black luxury car. It wasn’t until 2012 that uber moved towards people using their own cars and Uber morphed into what it is today.While saying Uber may very well have been a slip of the tongue when she meant to say taxi, mistakes like that can make you doubt the entire story.I enjoy the books and I like the reader submissions as much as I enjoyed the authors submissions, just letting you know that so you understand that I’m not trying to be overly critical. I just know that I can’t have been the first person to think”wait a minute, Uber hasn’t been a thing for ten years” when I read the last line of that story.

I think about identity, about finding/losing/being oneself. About history, about culture, about who we are, who I am, where we have come from and are going.I just finished reading My Butch Career, by Esther Newton. I wanted to read it because Esther is a dear friend, a long time friend, a mentor and student both. We came to know each other through our dogs, through dog sports, the first shared interest we realized we had. I was in my middle twenties, she was twenty years older than that. When we met she saw in me a young heterosexual married woman, a few years later I was also a mother. What we had in common, she thought, were the dogs. What we had in common, I thought, was a whole lot more than that. But what we had in common was the very thing that kept us from sharing our common ground for nearly twenty years. The space between us, the words not spoken and trusts not shared, are at the heart of why our world needs this book. I started reading it because it was written by a friend, I finished reading it because it filled a hunger I almost did not know I had, because it gave me a past within my culture, it gave me a history.It was common back then, when I first met Esther, to not trust ‘them’, because they were straight, because they were not us, because we had been terrorized, ostracized, abused. And so, as much as we had in common within the realm of dog sports, she was guarded, because, from outward appearance, I was not one of us, but one of them. This much I understood from the start, and while I yearned for elders to guide me in our culture, I did not hold it against them that they could not see beyond story that my life had become. There is nothing special about me or my circumstances, many queers of my generation married, some certainly because they were trying to prove to themselves or others that they weren’t gay, but for some of us it was more complicated, nuanced. No man ever caused my heart to stop with a glance, nor did any man fill me with raw sexual desire, but I still could love them, after a fashion, I could tell myself it was enough, because I wanted children, and, as I was told by my girlfriend shortly before we split, shortly before I married a man, it wouldn’t be fair to raise children with lesbian parents, they would be tormented at school, bullied from the start. My husband knew, my close friends knew, but the rest of the world saw the outward appearance, the woman with husband and children, the woman who, by default, was straight. Or, almost worse, closeted by fear and possibly self loathing. I was neither straight nor closeted, but with two children in tow and a husband at home, I was somehow on hold, queer on ice, waiting.All this has changed. There is no longer a husband. My outward appearance matches what I know about myself. My partner and I out in both our public and private lives, I am once again one of us, and what I always knew Esther and I had in common is now common knowledge.When I first met Esther, I was young, conflicted. The things that drew me to her (and I do not mean this in any romantic or sexual way, but in the way one is drawn to a mentor, the way one innately understands another’s ability to teach one something that is both important and lacking in ones own self), at the same time made me uncomfortable. It wasn’t that she was gay, gay had surrounded me my entire life, being raised, as I was, by lefty parents in the heart of Greenwich Village in the 1960s and 70s, having been taken by my father, at the age of eight, to see, carefully, from behind a police barricade, what would become known as the Stonewall Uprising. But butch, that was the thing. Butch, not in the way that I had seen it so often portrayed, not really quite butch like me, but a version that made me make sense of myself. Butch as she describes in the very first pages of her memoir –‘is about a gender expression that combines some version of the masculinity you saw around you as a child with same-sex desire.’My father, that version of masculinity he portrayed, was in my core, and far from what I had seen as butch in my limited exposure. My father, who was lefty, liberal, intellectual, and possibly gay himself. My father who was the stay at home parent. My father who was sensitive and soft and knew nothing of sports or of being tough and unemotional. I struggled with this later, with some more traditionally raised women telling me I was not butch enough, not ‘man’ enough, because the men who shaped their childhoods were the quiet stoic sort who tinkered with cars and watched football on TV.To be part of a culture that has traditionally been marginalized and outlawed is difficult. To be part of a culture that is connected not by blood or location, but by, for lack of a better word, desire, is a complicated thing. From my mother and aunts I learned the stories of their childhood, mixed race children in 1930’s Paris, the torment and teasing they endured. My father, a young boy in Germany at the time the Nazis rose to power, shared those terrifying events. I understand my biological past and the pains visited upon my biological kin, I can feel it in my bones. But there was no ‘parent’ to tell me the stories of my other culture, only sweeping brush accounts. I came into being without knowing where I came from.This book makes a brilliant start at changing that, a first hand glimpse at my cultural past, at who we were and how we became who we are now. I started reading it because Esther is a friend, I finished it because it fed a hunger that I was not even quite aware of having until it was sated. We should all read this, take it in, understand. This is our people, our culture, our blood.

Esther Newton shares her story of growing up identifying as a boyish girl in an unusual family and the challenges of finding her way to professional success. She describes Her joy in finding and joining the women’s movement and gay liberation . She tells her stories of exploring her sexuality and relationships with much honesty and her sense of humor makes this a fun read too.

This book is not a casual read unless you are a driven reader of space histories (I am). It does however fill a huge gap in available literature about the Apollo Guidance Computer. It is very detailed yet flows well, and is narrative enough to not feel like a dry treatise. But you'd best be pretty interested in the topic, because the author assumes this and does not look back once he gets going... as should be the case.The book details the development of the AGC and its precursors from the beginning onward, spending lots of time at both NASA and the MIT lab. The details are specific and the storytelling clear and generally compelling. He covers both the technical details and the political, managerial and engineering drivers and decisions that brought about the ACG as we know it today.If you want to know how Apollo could fly to the moon, land there and come home on roughly 36k of program memory and 2k of RAM, this book will, finally, tell you how.

You might think a book entitled "Digital Apollo" would be about the development, programming and operation of the digital computers in the Apollo Command (CM) and Lunar (LM) Modules. You would be partially right. About half of Dr. David Mindell's superb volume covers those subjects, very readably and in great detail. But the book's scope is far broader than that. It is really nothing less than a comprehensive examination of the relationships between humans and machines from the earliest days of aviation, through the X-15, Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and Space Shuttle eras, and into the future of spaceflight.It's a fascinating story that has not, to my knowledge, previously been told in any depth. The evolution of the Apollo computer hardware and software occurred in parallel with the evolution of the attitudes of steely eyed NASA astronauts, who fought hard to avoid relinquishing any control to machines. All the early astronauts were test pilots--their hard-won experiences with primitive vacuum-tube systems in aircraft had convinced them that "electronics always fail." Thus they opposed NASA's decision, mandated by the complexity of lunar missions, to depend largely on new-fangled transistorized digital computers to help them fly the Apollo spacecraft. At one time, in those days before "fly-by-wire" control systems, some Apollo astronauts wanted actual cables connecting a conventional aircraft-type stick with the CM's attitude control rocket motors. That didn't happen. They feared that computer failures would jeopardize their missions and perhaps cost them their lives. That also didn't happen. To find out what DID happen, there's no better source than "Digital Apollo."Dr. Mindell says his book "...tells the story of the relationship between human and machine in the Apollo project and how that relationship shaped the experience and the technology of flying to the moon. It is a story of human pilots, of automated systems, and of the two working together to achieve the ultimate in flight. It is also a story of public imagery, professional identities and social relationships among engineers, pilots, flight controllers and many others, each with their own visions of spaceflight." That's a good summary, but I'd like to add to it. First, words like "social relationships" and "working together" and "visions" should not deter technophiles from reading "Digital Apollo." Those subjects are all in there, but much of the book is at the down-and-dirty technical level of bits and bytes and magnetic core memories and DSKYs and other esoterica. Dr. Mindell superbly integrates the human and computer stories in a way that almost anyone should find interesting. Second, "Digital Apollo" is one of the best-written spaceflight books I've read in years. Its tone is brisk and conversational, but the information it contains is deep, broad and very well-explained. You don't have to be a space cadet to enjoy it. It is also exceptionally accurate. I came across only a few minor errors in the parts of the story that I know, such as calling a metal alloy used in the X-15 "Iconel-X" rather than "Inconel-X" (the alloy and the name came from the International Nickel Company, hence "Inco")."Digital Apollo" fills a niche in the history of technology and spaceflight in a most outstanding way. It reminds me a little of Tracy Kidder's "The Soul of A New Machine," and that is high praise indeed. Even if you think you know Apollo, you should read it. You're sure to learn a lot, and be entertained in the process. I recommend it most highly.

This book is too good to race through... I've been reading this book slowly over the last two months, and the technical content and details of the Apollo Program (with focus on the man and machine interactions) are outstanding.I work on training flight simulators, and the background sections on the X-15 Program (and its simulators), which formed a basis for the Apollo mission planning, and human(pilot)-machine interface design, were especially interesting.All throughout the book, the author provides the reasons WHY things were done the way they were, not just HOW they were done (which has been the case in all the other Apollo-related books I've read previously).Additionally, significantly detailed explanations of all stages of the Apollo Guidance Computer(AGC) hardware and software development process are provided. I was especially impressed with the "real explanation" of the root cause of the famous 1201/1202 program alarms, which came close to causing Neal Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to abort the Apollo 11 (first moon) landing due to (among other things) pilot work overload. The fact is that the software did not have to change for Apollo 12 to deal with the root cause of the alarms... it was the procedures that had to change to deal with the root cause of the alarms, which was due to overloading of the LM AGC, due to lack of a full understanding of the interaction of the rendezvous RADAR subsytem (which Aldrin had insisted be turned on early "just in case" of an abort, so that the pilots wouldn't have to remember to turn it on if there was an abort), with various other subsystems during the critical final decent stage of the mission - which, all combined, caused the AGC to become "overloaded" and cause the 1201 & 1202 program alarms during the most critical phase of the Apollo 11 mission.

Good book! It will be helpful for any one who wants to make glazes (not just glazes with macro crystals ;-) and to understand the process and materials! Mrs. Shimbo is teaching You how to "catch the fish". Most of the books with recipes without explanations and technical details are doing opposite they are "catching the fish for you" so you are stumbling in the dark-in ceramics that way is full of disappointment! The way that Mrs. Shimbo is showing is enlightening! My advice for the people that wants to make their own glazes is to buy also hers "Chemistry for Crystalieri and two Jon Britt's books "The complete guide to Mid-range glazes and the other one for High-Fire glazes and that's it! This 4 books and lot of practice -have a pleasant journey!
